About Vivitar Variable NDX Filter

Vivitar NDX Filters, Adjustable From ND2 - ND1000...

• Vivitar Filters are manufactured from high-quality solid optical materials. Each individual filter is heat-treated to avoid any rare movement or distortion.
• This Variable Neutral Density filter reduces intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, giving no changes in hue or color rendition.
• The purpose of standard photographic neutral density filters is to allow the photographer greater flexibility to change the aperture, exposure time and/or blur of subject in different situations and atmospheric conditions.
• Instead of reducing the aperture to limit light, the photographer can add a ND filter to limit light, and can then set the shutter speed according to the particular motion desired and the aperture set as needed.

Super Value

The filter rotates smoothly and works as advertised. It seems well built. For as little as I see using it, I just didn't see spending so much more on the professional's preferred brands.

Not for wide angle

By

from Elkton, MD  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I don't know how I missed the review that says you can't use it below 50mm, but I did. Just to make it clear, you can't use this on a wide-angle lens without getting bizarre dark and bright streaks. I tried it on my Sigma 10-20mm, and the results were horrible. The only other lens I have with a 77mm filter is my 170-500, which is plenty slow already. So I'll exchange it for an ND-8 filter, or the like. Another problem is that it's significantly wider than the filter size, so you can't put a lens hood on the lens you have this filter on. This may be true for all variable ND filters - I don't know.

One good, one bad

By

from Hot Springs, AR  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I bought an 82mm and a 77mm. The 77 worked fine all the way to fully stopped down. The 82 started showing dark bands 3 or 4 stops down, and a full dark X or Hourglass at 7 and 8 stops. I returned the 82 as unusable.

All in ONE ND FIlter

By

This is a needed addition to any camera bag. It's always the RIGHT filter to enable you to slow down your shutter or open up your lens in ANY lighting situation. It works great for getting that silky water effect no matter how bright the scene is! It's a MUST HAVE!

Comparing with older filters

Received VND filter, appears to be good quality. Still prepping for trials with two different lenses.Comparing with previous single density filters.

Not bad for the price

By

from Tacoma, WA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I bought this for long exposures in varying light conditions. Rather than have several different ND filters, these were very appealing. Generally, I buy more expensive filters, but I wanted to try one of these without spending too much. The price was certainly right and so far, it's performed very well. I'm impressed with the smooth turning operation and the dynamic variation in density. The images reflect the consistent density as well with no detectable degradation (sometimes present in less expensive filters). In all, Vivitar did an excellent job with this one.
