WD WD30EFRX Features

  • Compatibility: Desktop hard drive is not always tested for compatibility in NAS and can present problems during integration
  • Reliability: Most desktop drive is not designed for the high operating temperatures or for 24x7 operating environments making them less reliable when used in a NAS system
  • Error recovery controls: Desktop drive is not traditionally designed for RAID environments and have controls that prevent the RAID controller from assisting in the event of an error which can cause the hard drive to drop off the RAID after a period of time
  • Noise and vibration: Typically designed for single drive applications, average desktop drive is not optimized for multi-drive systems which have higher noise and vibration levels. When these drives are added to a NAS, the additional vibration can reduce the reliability and life span of the drive
  • Enhanced reliability: Your NAS systems is always on, a highly reliable drive is essential. With a 35% MTBF improvement over standard desktop drives, this WD WD30EFRX Red drive is designed and manufactured to be a more reliable and robust solution
  • Energy efficient: Reduce your electricity bill and carbon footprint with the WD WD30EFRX Red drive. Innovative technology reduces power consumption and lowers the operating temperature, resulting in a more reliable and affordable solution for always on 24x7 NAS environments

Works as advertised

from Santa Fe, NM  -  Power user

Installed two of these drives into my drobo FS NAS, they're a bit noisier than the Seagate barracuda drives they replaced, but it seems like the drobo is a bit faster and that's definitely a good thing.

Great value for money for 3TB drive

from San Jose, CA  -  Frequent User

I needed a few high capacity drives for my home file server. Although they are a bit slow in transfer speeds compared to high-spec desktop drives but WD RED series drives claimed to be build with 24/7 operation in mind and TLER feature enabled which is great for home/SOHO file servers. These drives do work just fine storing a lot of data, being very quite and cool. Can't complain about anything except for 3yrs. of manufacturer warranty (Adorama VIP extends it for a year, though) which is a bit confusing for a NAS-ready 24/7 targeted drive. Special note on outstanding Adorama shipping: it was a double boxed with AirSeal padding.
