I did my research before purchasing a NAS. I did not like the write speeds on this device, but after thinking about it and comparing prices/features I decided to go with the EX4. This weekend I'm setting it up and overall it is a great machine with a bunch of features. The only complaint I have so far is that I attached a 2TB hard drive via USB directly to the unit and the percentage complete shoots up to 96% in less than an hour. After waiting an hour for the 4% to complete I thought something was probably wrong so I cancelled the backup, rebooted and started it again. I should have done my research before rebooting it. After researching this problem I found out it is not stuck and it is not 96% complete. Hopefully this is the worst problem/quirk I run into. Otherwise so far so good!
This machine never worked right from the time it was delivered. It rebuilt the RAID on every boot, and took four attempts to update the firmware. Finally, I got a SMART fail notice on one of the drives. When I contacted WD tech support, they wanted my credit card to quick ship (5 to 7 business days!) a new drive, otherwise I'd have to send in the bad one and wait for them to send me a new one. They refused to respond any quicker, citing "company rules". That made it easy; I'm sending it back immediately
added this as a backup device. works as expected, no issues
