The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base is a gimbal-type tripod head that incorporates an elevated tilt mechanism and adjustable platform to make the camera/lens' center of gravity and tilt axis of the head be perfectly aligned. Things once thought of as impossible with a ballhead are nothing short of mundane with a Wimberley, because a weightless camera/lens combo (even a 600mm f/4 w/ large body) can literally be controlled with one finger.
Point the rig where you want and take the hand away and it stays exactly where you put it. The Version II head is more compact and lightweight, features a redesigned panning base, "soft-touch" knobs and includes a built-in Arca-type quick release base. Visit lens chart for a chart of compatible lens plates and cameras.

Unless I am going hiking, I will never use a ball mount head again! This head is too big and heavy for hiking. But then again, if I anticipate a wildlife shot, I might just carry it anyway. These gimbal heads work very differently than a ball mount. Once you balance your camera, you can point it in any direction and it will stay put without even locking it down. It's as though your rig is weightless. You don't have to try to hold your camera steady while you lock it down as with a ball. You don't even have to lock it down to take a photo. It makes wildlife and macro much more easy and effortless. ANY photography you do on a tripod will be so much more effortless. This Wimberley is constructed of the highest grade materials and machining. The motion is fluid and silky smooth; you just want to keep panning and tilting because it feels so good. It is superb and worth every penny. You won't want to ever use a ball head after using this product for five minutes. I give it five stars plus plus plus.

I NEVER NEEDED ONE UNTIL I BOUGHT A 500MM LENS. I WAS IN A GREAT WORKSHOP IN ESTES PARK, CO. THE INSTRUCTERS RECOMMENDED IT. WITH THEIR MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE I FOLLOWED THEIR ADVISE AFTER RESEARCHING IT ON MY OWN. THEY WERE CORRECT. IT HAS BEEN THE STANDARD FOR YEARS. IT IS A COSTLY INVESTMENT, BUT THE BEST DOES COST. THERE IS A LITTLE LEARNING ADJUSTMENT. I HAD USED MY OLD MOUNTING SYSTEM AND NEVER HAD TO THINK, ANY CHANGE TAKES A WHILE, IT IS A EASY ADJUSTMENT. LARRY
Solidly built, works great just as advertised, and really holds on to my expensive lens tightly enough that I don't worry about it falling off
I thought about purchasing a less expensive gimbal head but after reading many many reviews, decided to buy this one instead. I love it! It makes my 500 mm lens weightless, and is a joy to shoot with. It is a heavy head, but not difficult or unwieldy to use at all. I'm very happy with my decision. Also replaced the standard lens foot with a RRS arca-swiss base, and would recommend that for stability and trimming a bit more weight off the whole unit.
I have used this product for several years now and am wholly satidfied with the quality and performance. The WH-200 is silky smooth easy to operate and solid. Coupled with my Induro AT-413 tripod, it is heavy, but well worth the effort to carry, but then I am a 6ft, 240lb guy. I use the Wimberley for everything, wildlife imagery, landscapes and studio (product images). It is easy with the right plates on the lenses to balance any of my lenses even when using extenders, or with my D800 with its additional battery pack/vertical grip.
I use it w/a monopod and 400 and 500mm lenses and when I have to move quickly, I wear a fishing rod holder, put the monopod in the pocket and with one hand for the Wimberly, I am as mobile as if I were using a a 200 or 300mm lens. Great for pans in auto racing, football etc where your don't want to support the weight of the heavy long glass. It gives your arms a rest. A truly great product. Birders must love these things.
Great gimbal head at a real good price
I researched a number of gimbal heads prior to my purchase of the WH-200. Dealing with Adorama was great. The product came a day or two before promised. The packaging was solid, and the head was flawless. The WH-200is solidly built, and attractively designed. Most importantly, it works great! I decided to upgrade from ball heads because they always tended to drift. It is easy to balance my camera and any number of lenses (long and short). Once balanced, the camera stays aimed- a real joy. There are a number of different brands available. I chose Wimberly based on recommendation of respected photographers, and product reputation. If you are new to a gimbal, it looks complex, but once you try it, it really is easy. The unit comes in two pieces. It does not have a carry case for transport- something that would be handy, but can be purchased from a third party. I would also suggest purchasing a skin to protect the head from dings during transport. This isn't the most expensive head, but it isn't cheap either. I think it is an excellent sweet spot for cost and quality.
If you are shooting wildlife with long prime lenses this is the only head that you will ever need. The best out there! Locks right on your subject. Love the fluidness of movement. I shoot with a Nikor 500mm F4 and a Sigma 300-800 and it holds them with no problem.
Overall I am very pleased with the range and ease of use for this Wimberley Head. I wish the clamp were a quick release design but the screw lock is relatively easy to use. The only issue is getting to focus ring if needed in manual focus. It is a little awkward especially if you have short arms. I also felt it useful to keep my hand on the base for any vibration though haven't seen much in images with or without the support.
I am currently using the WH 200 on a monopod from inside my truck. I find numerous birds do not like it when you leave your vehicle. I'm sure it would work better on a tripod but that doesn't work inside the truck. I am using the Wimberley with an 800mm lens and it works much better than hand holding the lens.
