About Yamaha MX49

The Yamaha MX49 is a 49 key music production synthesizer that combines MOTIF XS sounds, USB Audio, MIDI connectivity and DAW and VST controller features. The MX49 includes more than 1000 voices directly from the Yamaha MOTIF XS. It includes acoustic sounds like piano, electric piano, strings, drums as well as complex 8-element synth sounds. Each voice can be customized and stored. You can also use the on-board VCM effects, which are designed to simulate the effects found on vintage keyboards.

The keyboard also includes the performance mode feature also found on the MOTIF keyboard line. This mode allows you to combine voices for play on the keyboard using the dedicated "split" and "layer buttons" and is handy for creating performances that simulate a whole band playing.

In addition to the tone generator and performance mode, the MX49 is also a capable USB Audio and MIDI Interface. Connect a USB cable to your computer and you can monitor all the sounds from your DAW via the headphone output of the MX49, or you can listen by connecting to external studio monitors. The MX49 audio interface is bi-directional so you can record the internal sounds of the keyboard directly to your computer, without ever going to the analog domain. Also, you can connect an additional controller to your computer via the MIDI in port, or use the keyboard to control other MIDI devices such as hardware sequencers and groove boxes by connecting them to the MX49's MIDI out port.

Beyond the USB audio/MIDI port, the keyboard also has a USB to Device port so you can connect USB devices for storing MX49 data to external memory. You can also play back .wav files directly from a USB stick using this port. For playing back audio from external audio devices like iPods, you can connect to the AUX input using a 3.5mm mini stereo cable.

The MX49 is also equipped with knobs and buttons for controlling internal sounds, DAW parameters and VST instruments. The interface can be customized with the included remote template editor so that any VST can be set up to be controlled by the MX49. There are also advanced integration templates for use with a variety of DAWs. When used with Cubase for instance, there is a feature that allows any parameter can be controlled by the keyboards rotary encoder just by mousing over it.

I extensively researched this keyboard before buying it so I was fully aware of most of its virtues as well as its limitations. Therefore, my 4-star rating does not reflect any of those known qualities. It should be noted that while this is technically a synthesizer, it is not intended to be a true "traditional" synth. Basic synthesis parameters like Amp ADSR, Filter ADSR, LFO etc. ARE available with some clumsy menu diving; but the front panel parameters are limited to basic filter tweaks, Amp ADSR and basic FX mix levels. It should also be noted that there is at this time, NO software editor for customizing and synthesizing your own sounds--only an editor for managing performance sets. That being said, this is a generally easy to use keyboard full of great "real" as well as "classic synth" sounds with enough potential for musical expression to hold up its usefulness and value for many years. All things considered, I feel this keyboard is a great addition to my studio collection and I will get a lot of use out of it. However, I docked 1 star from my rating for the following reasons: 1. Overall physical construction is a bit flimsy and it is a bit TOO light-weight. If you plan to take this on gigs, you will need a hard keyboard case. 2. The editor software is ONLY for use with customizing Performance sets and NOT for sound editing/management. I found it actually easier to edit and store my own sets within the keyboard itself. I have so far found this software to be mostly redundant. 3. While front panel navigation is generally straightforward and easy, I feel that Yamaha could have done better in terms of streamlined work-flow.

I use the MX 49 in my home studio and the sounds alone are worth the price not to mention the effects and one USB cable to connect to the computer,I can't find anything about this unit to complain about and I have tried to find one.

Incredible power in a small package

By

from Deming, NM.  -  Power User

Very easy to set up. Edited voice parameters and created performances within minutes. Had performances from my Roland Fantom X6 stored on a USB Flash drive - inserted to the MX49, easy to scroll through the list. Unbelievable sound coming out of this 8 1/2 pound little keyboard, just incredible. Blows the Yamaha MM series away.

Quality Product at a Great price point

By

from Orlando, Fl  -  Enthusiast

The keyboard has some amazing sounds. Quality sounds and a lot of versatility. Positives: Great Sample sounds - Nice variety of sounds - 16 part multi timbre - 128 Poly Negatives: No adjustments of Samples - Need more directions from the manual - Saving Part and performances can be confusing Overall this is a great product with a terrific price point. And i'm sure this product will have many updates in the future to broaden the scope of this instrument.
