Consider the humble mid-range zoom, which starts at a wide-angle setting and goes into moderate telephoto range. Starting at a wide-angle setting and zooming through "normal" to a modest telephoto, these lenses usually are sold as kit lenses with low- and mid-range DSLRs. But there are more and more midrange kits that add something to these modest aspirations, such as an exceptionally long zoom range, or a constant, wide aperture for low-light shooting.
