Weekend Wrap

Franziska Dierschke has an idea for a digital camera: Make it look like a toy gun! As if snapshooters haven’t had enough problems with security-conscious police.

This is not an actual product…yet. It’s a concept device and not for sale, but in recent days it’s been making its way around the web. The Aimat camera is a low-resolution digital camera in a gun-shaped body, in toy gun colors. It is being praised as “campy,” and “just for laughs,” according to reports on various web sites that are probably based on a press release designed to drum up interest among potential investors.

Ya can’t make this stuff up.

I feel it's my civic duty to shoot the Aimat camera concept down before someone gets hurt.  (Want a "campy" camera "for laughs"? Check out the "Related Products" box on the right side of this page. )

Here are five reasons why this should never see the light of day as an actual product:

1.    They’ll really crack up when you show up with one of these puppies at airport security. Imagine the looks on their faces! Imagine the look on your face when you miss your flight because you’ve been detained for questioning as a suspected terrorist! What campy fun that would be!

2.    Image quality will be even worse than cell phones—and you won’t even have a preview screen so you can see how much worse. (At least a cell phone won't get you in trouble at airport security.)

3.    Absolutely nobody will get nervous when you start “shooting” at popular tourist destinations, like the White House or Statue of Liberty. Or the Brooklyn Bridge—it’s for sale, you know.

4.    You might get it mixed up with your arsenal of water pistols.

And finally, for those who say "chill out, dude, nobody in their right mind would make a real gun in day-glow colors," here's reason #5:

This is the Aimat camera.

This is a real gun. A bright pink Glock.

At twenty paces, would the police be able to tell the difference?

‘nuff said.

The above is the opinion of the author, and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of Adorama management.

Pink Glock

Funny article. Slightly off topic...The Pink Glock is being marketed to women as personal protection. It looks like a toy but it isn't. Law enforcement people are not happy with it because now they can't assume a brightly-colored gun is a toy any more.
