Good locations to shoot from?

I thought this video did a great job presenting the technical requirements for shooting lightning, but I think some additional tips on where and accessories to use would be useful as well. Perhaps from a nearby hill or with a good city skyline in the background, also to use things like rain covers for the camera (plastic shopping bag works pretty well I bet). The parts I am unsure of is predicting the storm direction (can guess by weather channel app on phone I suppose), what kind of storms produce the best lightning, what time of the season is best for thunderstorms, are weather-sealed cameras still ok in moderate/heavy rain, do lens hoods help deflect rain drops on the lens, etc. Also is bulb setting preferable to 30 seconds? Keep the shutter open until you see lightning, although this might lead to overexposing the shot. Any more tips/advice on these topics would be greatly appreciated :). Great tutorial!

Substitute for shutter release

When I am worried about camera shake I set the camera on a 2 second delay so that the camera can stop moving before it takes the shot.
