Digital Photography 1 on 1

By Mark Wallace

June 21, 2011

How do you approach strangers on the street and take ther pictures?

In this episode, Mark Wallace shares his personal approach to street photography, which includes shooting informal "street portraits" of strangers with their permisison. (In other forms of street photography, photographers may not ask permission and may shoot candids so the subjects never know they are being photographed, which is a very different approach.) How does Mark approach people? How does he get a conversation started that leads to their allowing him to take their portrait.

Exposure comp

Thanks for you video, I only found adorama tv whilst browsing you tube in the UK and its great. In the first few shots with the 3 kids i noticed that they are in the shade and you didnt use flash...Due to how dark their skin is, did you use exposure compensation by arround 2 stops or is that how the shots came out?

Love the video!

Thank you mark! You are always impressing me with your work. This video was helpful enough to get me started with street photography. Im very timid when it comes to asking people to pose and how to approach them, but this was really helpful.

Good, honest approach

Mark's comments are always valuable. I loved the photos of the three little (African?) girls. Most of these are posed photos, but I've noticed the most powerful ones are candid. Hopefully Mark will devote a segment to strictly candid photography. Remember Paul Strand's trick with the false lens?

Thanks !!

I do a lot of this type of photography. People tell me I'm good at it. I always worry about model releases. The best tips I got here were relaxing and the irelease app. This app will help me do the first part !!
