New imaging software from DxO, Nik, onOne, Topaz, Corel; Toshiba's WiFi SDHC card; Fuji kills 6 films; Pentax shows K-Q lens adapter; and a Red Nikon DSLR

Fuji Kills Off 6 Films

As Photoshop World kicks off in Las Vegas, the message of digital's dominence was driven home when Fujifilm Japan announced this week that several of its films were being discontinued:

  • Fujichrome Sensia III 100
  • Fujichrome T64 (35mm, 36 exposure)
  • Astia 100F (120, 220, 4x5 regular and quickload, and 8x10)
  • Velvia 100F (4x5 quickload; not to be confused with Velvia 100, which is still in production)
  • Fujicolor Pro 160NC (4x5 both versions)
  • Fujifilm Neopan SS (35mm, 36 exposures)

DxO Film Pack 3 simulates emulsion looks

Do you miss Tri-X, Kodachrome or Velvia as you've moved to digital image capture? DxO Film Pack 3 promises a revised user interface that lets you apply the looks of some 60 different films to your digital images. New in version 3: 10 new emulsions, a revamped user interface, additional color filters and black-and-white conversion controls, and both stand-alone and Photoshop plug-in versions. But buried within DxO's press release announcing version 3 is some big news: Sebastio Salgado recently switched from film to digital—and DxO FilmPack has apparently eased the pain. “DxO FilmPack has become a must-have step in my photographic workflow to render the unique Kodak Tri-X® grain on my large-format prints,” he is quoted as saying.

Nik Color Efex Pro 4 has 55 filter effects

A flood of image editing programs and plug-ins were announced this week at Photoshop World. Nik's Color Efex Pro 4 Photoshop plug-in is the latest version of its digital filters for retouching and creative enhancements. 55 filters can be stackable for infinite combinations. Visual presets, filter recipes, and new filters including Detail Extractor, Image Borders, and Vintage Film Efex are among the new fitlers. A history browser is said to improve workflow and usability. Under the hood, GPU processing and multi-core optimization are claimed to speed up processing time. The full Pro edition will be available in October for $199.95. Upgrades from Version 2.0 or 3.0, and a stripped down, 26-filter “Select” edition, will cost $99.95. Corel Painter Pro adds HDR, Blend, Selective Focus, more

Corel is boasting “dramatic performance improvements” as well as new features in PaintShop Pro X4, its flagship image editing program. Corel says X4 has over 75 new and enhanced features, including: overhauled HDR Tools that let you merge multiple photos to get the widest dynamic range; Photo Blend for compositing people, objects or areas from multiple images; Fill Light and Clarity, which enhances shadow and detail areas; Selective Focus, which emulates the look of small-scale models; and the Vignette Tool, which applies soft, faded borders. Corel claims a 50% increase in processing speed as well. Scroll down for the full Corel press release.

Topaz B&W Effects, new plug-in, announced

Boasting stylized effects such as Cyanotype and Albumen and the look of other “historic” black-and-white films, as well as more popular black-and-white looks, Topaz B&w Effects is a new Photosohop plug-in. The software offers over 150 presets so users can quickly enhance images with a single click. The software will cost around $60. Scroll down to read the complete press release.

Toshiba Launches WiFi SDHC Card

There was other news unrelated to Photoshop World, and topping that list is Toshiba's launch of the FlashAir, which they say is the world's first SDHC memory card with embedded wireless LAN functionality. The 8GB card is said to support peer-to-peer photo transfers and uploads to and downloads from servers. Toshiba claims this can be done with lower power consumption than other WiFi-capable SDHC cards. The card will be available in February. Pricing was not announced.

Pentax Shows K-mount adapter for Q MILC

With the Pentax Q, the world's smallest interchangeable-lens camera, now in stock at Adorama (and currently being field-tested at Fashion Week by our ace fashion shooter Sandy Ramirez), Pentax Japan has unveiled plans for an adapter that will allow Pentax K-mount lenses to be used on the Q. No release date has been set. Intriguingly, nearly all K-mount lenses, thanks to the tiny sensor and resulting image crop that will force a 5.5x 35mm equivalent angle-of-view calculation, will be telephotos. The Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens, for example, would give you a 220mm equivalent angle of view. This could be good news for wildlife shooters who want to travel light: Pentax's 300mm f/4 would become a 1650mm equivalent on the Q. Hmmm...

...and finally:  A Red Nikon DSLR?

It's only available in Europe, for now, but Nikon is trying something they've never done before: They've produced a DSLR that's not black. A limited edition red version of the D3100, unchanged on the inside, will be available later this month across the pond. Will the crimson version of Nikon's 14MP entry-level camera turn enough heads to encourage Nikon to bring it over to the States? It goes on sale later this month; we'll see.
