Sony adds free cloud-based still/video sharing, storage and editing

In a sign of convergence between image capture and wireless and cloud-based computing, Sony today announced "PlayMemories," a free cloud-based services that spans multiple kinds of devices allowing users to share, edit, view and organize still images and videos.



Sony today entered the cloud. The electronics giant announced the PlayMemories series, a cloud-based image storage and interactive service that will be provided for free. PlayMemories consists of four parts:

  • PlayMemories Online, which lets users manage, share and edit photos and videos via the cloud
  • PlayMemories Home, which lets users organize and edit content on a PC
  • PlayMemories Studio, which lets users organize, edit and view files on a Playstation3
  • PlayMemories Mobile, which lets users transfer files from a WiFi enabled Bloggie camcorder to a smartphone or tablet.


PlayMemories Home will be bundled with Sony's digital imaging products starting this month, and  Android and iOS apps will be available for PlayMemories mobile via their respective App stores.

In addition, Sony announced a new rugged Bloggie and three compact cameras:



The Bloggie Sport: A ruggedized pocket camcorder that shoots 1080p Full HD video at 30 fps and 5.1MP stills. It is waterproof (to over 30 feet), dustproof and shockproof (droppable to around 4 feet), and has a 2.7-inch LCD.



DSC-W610 ($110 list): A budget-priced 14MP compact with a 26mm (35mm equivalent) 4x lens, 2.7-inch screen, 360-degree sweep panorama, image stabilization, and Intelligent auto everything.

DSC-W620 ($120 list): Pretty much th same as the DSC-W610 but with 4 picture effects, 720p HD video, and a 28mm lens.

DSC-W650 ($150 list): A 16MP compact with a 5x zoom lens that starts at a wider-than-average 25mm (35mm equivalent). Similar to the W620 but with Optical Steady Shot for smoother videos.

Sony has been providing customers with a variety of digital cameras and camcorders for capturing moments of everyday life to professional situations as well as offering various post shooting products and services to enjoy their content. Under the concept, "Play More. All your Memories,” the “PlayMemories” series will realize an experience where users can enjoy their personal content across various devices. We will aim to enrich customer’s digital imaging experience not only during but also post shooting.

The “PlayMemories” series consists of four solutions: PlayMemories Online for easily managing and sharing videos and photos overthrough the cloud, PlayMemories Home for organizing and editing content on a personal computer, PlayMemories Studio for organizing, editing and viewing on PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®); and PlayMemories Mobile for transferring content from Wi-Fi enabled Bloggie, announced in the U.S., to a smartphone and tablet.

Organizing & Viewing: Calendar View and Map View simplify the task of organizing videos and photos according to date or location. Additionally, users can view or upload stored personal content on digital cameras and camcorders directly by bypassing their PC.

Editing: Both 2D and 3D images can be easily edited and copied to a Blu-ray disc.

Sharing: Uploading to “PlayMemories Online” is a breeze and can be done without a web browser. Uploading to Facebook® , YouTube™ and more are possible.

Taking advantage of the extremely high processing power of PS3®, users can freely zoom and scroll videos and photos, and even easily edit HD video content as if they were playing a game. Crisp handling of large-sized images which has been unimaginable in the past has now become possible on PS3® with this application. Handling the images has become as comfortable as playing a game by using a DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller. Also, it is possible to remotely use the service with PlayStation®Vita or PSP® (PlayStation Portable) , via Remote Play*1.

A free trial version of the application for a limited time will be available.

Organizing & Viewing: In addition to the videos and photos stored on PS3®, content stored on cameras, external hard drives and storage devices connected via USB can be viewed without the need to transfer to PS3®. Also, users can easily search and sort images by date or location.

Editing: By using action tags, adding visual/sound effects such as slow motion and frame by frame playback or inserting captions and scripts to the images are as easy and enjoyable as playing a game.

LAS VEGAS (CES Booth #14200), Jan. 9, 2012 – The newest additions to Sony’s Cyber-shot® line of point-and-shoot cameras deliver powerful new features for consumers, ranging from 360° Sweep Panorama™ and image stabilization technologies to creative picture effects. These new entry-level cameras pack high performance into a compact body, allowing users to take high-quality, creative photos with ease.

Small Cameras, Big Features

The compact DSC-W610, DSC-W620 and DSC-W650 cameras feature Sony’s new 360° Sweep Panorama™ mode. Users can now capture beautiful, seamless 360 degree panoramic images of the entire surrounding landscape with one easy “press and sweep” motion. Multiple images are automatically stitched together to create one stunning, detailed panoramic photo.

Additionally, the “Intelligent Auto” mode allows the cameras to automatically optimize camera settings based on the external environment. They analyze focus, lighting, subjects and more, selecting the appropriate scene mode to realize a clear, high-quality image output with ease.
