Metering

How did you get the flash to fire when you were metering it at 12:50?

Light stand (minus legs) works better

My photography teacher recommends a cheap light stand, by taking off the legs (usually one screw at the bottom) Its lighter than a monopod so you won't accidently drop your flash because of the weight from a top heavy monopod. I added a rubber bottom from a walking cane to the end of the light stick. Works great!

Shureline Paint Pole

Instead of using a monopod, I normally work with another photographer and have found a Shureline Paint Pole from Home Depot to be a great option for the "stick" part. It's around $20. Also use a Kacey Paint Pole adaptor to link that to a swivel.

Wireless Triggers?

Couldn't you just rotate the camera's built in flash toward the speed light, either left or right, to trigger the flash for verticals?
