Photo on the Go—AdoramaTV
By Joe McNally
August 9, 2012
Adorama Photography TV Presents Photo on the Go with Joe McNally. Join Joe in Hong Kong as he explains how to test the line of sight with a built-in camera flash and a SB-900 flash.
Watch as Joe McNally tests the strength of his DSLR's built-in flash to get the line of sight TTR transmission, and then uses his SB-900 as a commander in order to "talk" to the flash on his subject in this videom made exclusively for AdoramaTV.
It is important to use a TTR transmission when taking photographs of a subject that has a large depth of field. By using this technique, you can stack the background lighting and color in close to your subject in order to achieve the photo you need. The TTR transmission will make it easier for you to capture your subject from a distance.

I've had problems off and on with the Nikon CLS over the years and went back to Pocketwizards, but he's great and continually inspires me to keep on playing with it until I get it nailed. Thanks!

Both Joe McNally and TTL rock. I always learn something whenever he speaks. Thanks Adorama for bringing his wisdom to light.

I will answer my own question. The answer is yes! I had not set my SB800 properly so it wouldn't work. I then saw a great video on Utube on how to get into the Menu on the SB800 and from there it was easy. So you could use the in camera flash as commander to trigger the SB800 remote, or use the SB800 on the D300 and set as the commander to trigger another SB800 as a remote. UTube videos can be very informative. This video should have shown the same thing and not assumed that the viewer knows how to use all of their equipment, even though they should!

With all do respect to a photographer that I admire, this video is clearly shot on a green screen which is not something wrong to do actually it is quiet impressive regarding lighting and audio, but what makes it obvious that its a a green screen is that the audio is too clear for out doors and has an echo to it, now you might ask what does that have to do with what the video is trying to teach, ok Joe is trying to convince us that TTL has a longer range or the small flash on the camera has a longer range then the SB900 when it comes to firing from a distance, now if its a green screen like a predict then the test is false and his not really there in person, I don't mean to take the lesson or the fun out of this video, i trust all what he said but for me to believe and for it to be fair to the audience he should have been actually there in Hong Kong and not on a green screen.Thank youHythem Daham [Sorry Hythem, Joe really did shoot this in Hong Kong! -Ed.]

The video was well done, however it left me with the impression that simply using the in camara flash will trigger an out of camera flash without the need for a ramote trasnmitter similar to the Pocket Wizzard or the Adorama Remote Flash. Is this true? I just watched another Adorama video on the use of in camera and remote flashes and the host clearly showed the need for a transmitter on the camera. He mentioned the Pocket Wizzard. What is correct?

Joe McNally is the best photography teacher I've seen. He always seems to hit that sweet spot between "introductory" and "advanced" while speaking in plain English. He really makes the lessons easy to follow and instantly transferable to real life situations. Thanks, Joe.

I loved this demo, it was spot on as to technique and execution. My question is what was used to connect the hand held softbox to the paint pole? I could not understand the name given.

Sorry for the ignorance but what was triggering the remote flash, was it the light from the on-camera flash, or was it a radio-wave?
