Photokina 2012

September 19, 2012

Hasselblad surprised the photo industry at Photokina by joining the Mirrorless Interchangeable-Lens Compact camera movement by showing a pre-production version of the luxurious Lunar, which features a 24MP APS sensor.

Hasselblad Lunar

The Hasselblad Lunar is being prepared for lift-off. An Italian-designed posh MILC (Mirrorless interchangeable-lens compact camera), the Lunar is built around an APS CMOS sensor, and is constructed of precious metals, woods and other material. Not surprisingly, the camera will not be inexpensive: It will cost 5000 Euros (around $6,530). Hasselblad didn’t need to create a special lensmount; instead, the company has partnered, unexpectedly, with Sony, and the Lunar will accept E-Mount lenses. That’s the mount on Sony’s NEX line of MILCs. In fact, the sensor’s specs seem remarkably similar to one of Sony’s most popular sensors. Hmmm…

Inspired by the U.S. space program, of which it was an integral part, Hasselblad named their camera Lunar. Key features include:

  • 24.3MP APS-C sensor
  • 25 autofocus points
  • Real-time image processing and “accurate RAW to JPEG translation”
  • 3-inch HD LCD monitor
  • OLED viewfinder
  • Full HD in Auto or full manual mode
  • External microphone jack
  • Accommodation for A-mount lenses for video
  • Virtually no shutter lag (0.02 sec)
  • 10fps
  • ISO range 100-16,000
  • Auto HDR
  • Tri-Navi system for DSLR settings
  • Intelligent face registration
  • Anti-dust system

The
Hasselblad Lunar is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2013. Look for it at the Hasselblad store at Adorama.

APS CMOS sensor is for suckers

any sensor less than full frame is not worth buying because of digital noise and poor resolution. When will camera companies stop artificially segmenting their markets into idiots, amateurs and professionals. Dont we all deserve a full frame mirrorless camera. They will wake up to find that more advanced cell phones have taken over their market.

Not Necessary

Why oh why, would Hasselblad need to join Sony in making a MILC? And the price!!! OMG!!! No way! Only those who are really camera collectors would, or could afford this. I consider myself a lover and collector of camera's but this is really not necessary.

Hasselblad and Sony makes sense

Come on guys, this makes sense. When you think "Hasselblad" you think full frame rigs, either digital or film. When you think ILC, what do you think? I'm willing to bet Sony comes to mind first. ILC's are incredibly hot right now, but Hasselblad doesn't have the tech and years of progress in miniaturization to put one out there. It only make sense they team up with Sony, but then how do they differentiate themselves from the NEX? With austentatious design, that's how! I fully applaud Hasselblad for this. Strangely I have never lusted after a camera before now. It has always been about performance. This camera may change that for me...

Sony NEX 7 with jewelry

This camera is an insult to the photographic and consumer world. A Sony NEX 7 Dressed up with a Hasselblad logo. The jerk at Hasselblad who came up wth this idea should be sacked immediately

dressed upn NEX 7?

One drawing is hard to go by, but the "tri navi" system, Sony sensor, lens mount and the apparent EVF on the upper left all seem to point to an NEX7 with some woodgrain accents. Not sure why this would be worth a $5000 price premium over the Sony version.
