Exploring Photography with Mark Wallace: Adorama Photography TV
By Mark Wallace
October 25, 2012
Adorama Photography TV presents Exploring Photography with Mark Wallace. Join Mark as he explores an under-utilized feature of speedlights: the zoom!
Speedlights have the ability to zoom their light to match the zoom on the lens. You can turn the zoom into manual mode though and use it creatively to get unique illumination patterns in your images. Mark will show you how to use this feature on both a Canon and Nikon flash, and then give some examples of the results you can get.

Great video tutorial. So I'm now curious about using the flash zoom with a snoot, hard plastic or flexible with reflective fabric. I am assuming that zooming to the highest mm, narrowest focus would be best (most effecient) for snooting hair highlights, etc. Anyone tried this? I do not yet have a snoot of either kind, so I can't currently experiment.

Basic stuff but well done. I never considered that the flash wasn't zooming when doing fill in flash (often with a diffuser attached). I agree the model was very refreshing, especially in the dress/chair set. The orange fishing net top would be appropriate in a white stucco walled, red tiled roof, mediterranean fishing village. She is cute.

I learned several things from watching this video, including the fact that automatic zoom to sync with the zoom lens is disabled when the speedlight head is tilted to bounce light.

I have been trying to watch this video all day, but all I get is a message saying this video is private. Can you fix please?
