Nikon's new tele zoom is first to feature 3rd generation Vibration Reduction; 5-stops claimed.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f4 G ED VR

In a move designed to attract serious enthusiasts and professional photographers, Nikon today announced the Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR telephoto lens, Nikon's first lens with up to five stops of image stabilization. The new lens, designed for full-frame FX-format Nikon cameras, has a constant f/4 aperture and features the third generation of Nikon's VR vibration reduction technology.

Smaller and lighter than Nikon's pro-level AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8, the Nikon 70-200mm f/4 is designed for both professional photographers and serious amateurs in a more accessible form. The lens can be used in tandem with Nikon pro-grade teleconverters and maintain its AF and VR capabilities when used with the Nikon D4, D800, and D600 DSLRs.

The new lens is constructed from 20 optical elements in 14 groups, and includes Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat to reduce ghosting and flaring. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) is said to provide quiet and responsive autofocus.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR will be available at Adorama in late November for approximately $1,399.95. An optional Nikon Tripod Collar will be available for $223.95, although Nikon didn't announce when it will be available.

200 or not 200

Plus is the VR and nano coating. Negative is the need to pay extra for a tripod collar. Still the best bag for your buck is Nikon 80 - 200 f/2.8 even without VR. Sharp as a tack and better priced.

Remove Collar!

Since the tripod collar is optional--and not even available yet--then it should not be shown in the product picture.

f/4?

NW photo guy has good point. I say wait for the Tamron f2.8 The Tamron is supposed to be relatively compact in form and it will most likely come with a tripod collar. $224.00 for a collar? C'mon Nikon!
