The day may just be beginning in Las Vegas, but we already have a lot of major announcements to talk about so let's get started. (Don't worry, we're not done. More CES goodness will be coming to you 'round the clock from the Adorama Learning Center).

Nikon Updates Enthusiast DSLR, Expands Nikon 1 System, Adds New Fashion Compact Digital Camera

Nikon today unveiled the Nikon D5200, a major DSLR that offers 24MP, a 39-point AF system and sophisticated metering previously only found in cameras a couple of categories up, all for $899.95 with the kit lens. Fujifilm Boosts AF, Shutter Performance In New Compact Digital Cameras

While other companies are boosting resolution or adding wireless capabilities to their cameras, Fujifilm is concentrating on improving performance across its entire range of compact digital cameras. The most impressive two are the new X100S and X20, both flagship models in APS and smaller-sensor categories. Pentax Adds Posh Premium Compact While Its MILC Now Comes in Colors

Pentax announced the Pentax MX-1, an advanced compact digital camera designed to appeal to serious hobbyists as well as pros who desire a compact carry-around camera. Featuring a 1/1.7 inch, 12MP backlit CMOS sensor and a fast f/1.8-2.5 4x optical zoom lens that covers 28-112mm (35mm equivalent), the MX-1 is poised to compete against similarly priced (around $500) high-end digital compacts. Canon Announces 4 Energy-Efficient Compact Digital Cameras—and One With No Shutter Release

Canon's camera designers must be working overtime. The Canon PowerShot N bears no resemblance to any digital compact camera we've seen before. It actually looks like that camera in the Instagram icon, but it packs some clever features. It leads a field that also includes several Wi-Fi enabled models; all of Canon's new cameras have an ECO mode, which is said to extend battery life. More...


Panasonic Revamps Compact Camera Lineup, Adds Wi-Fi NFC Technologies

What is NFC? It's Near Field Communication, and it's a the same wireless transfer technology that lets you scan a credit card without using a scanner or knuckle-buster. Some of Panasonic's new entires have it, along with Wi-Fi. Panasonic has a travel cam, a GPS-enabled waterproof digital compact camera, a 35x superzoom camera, and a super-slim fashion camera. New Olympus Lineup Includes Three Waterproof Compact Digital Cameras

Olympus today announced six new digital cameras, including three new underwater "Tough" models and three 24x superzoom cameras. The Tough line is headed by the TG-2, the second Waterproof digital compact camera from Olympus with a system of interchangeable underwater lenses. Sony Launches 5 New Compact Digital Cameras including 20MP Bridge Camera

Sony goes against the grain and breaks the MP barrier, putting a 20MP sensor in a superzoom bridge camera, one of 5 new Sony compact digital cameras introduced at CES. Sony's new compact camera lineup includes several models that take advantage of Sony's Super HAD sensor technology, which Sony says has twice the sensitivity to light as other sensors and which might very well allow them to get away with squeezing 20MP into a tiny sensor.
