JVC's two new camcorders can be submerged, frozen, dropped and dusted up...and will keep shooting.
JVC has carved out a niche in the important area of super-rugged camcorders and in the processe sharply distinguished themselves form the smart phone crowd. Most smart phones simply can't endure the kind of conditions the new JVC GZ-R70 and GZ-R10 camcorders are built to easily handle.
Despite the fact that they look like standard camcorders, JVC's new offerings are water-resistant to a depth of 16.4 feet, are shockproofed to drops of 4.9 feet, dustproof and freeze-proof down to 14 degrees F.
Both cameras have the same 40x optical zoom, a 2.5MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and an audio microphone that zooms with the picture. Both are claimed to provide exceptionally long battery life, able to shoot for 4.5 or more hours. The difference between the two cameras is that the GR-70 has a built-in LED light to illuminate dark shooting situations.
The JVC GZ-R70 will be available from Adorama in April for $499.95. The JVC GZ-R10 will be available in March for $399.95 and can be pre-ordered now from Adorama.
