New affordable high-power shoe mount flash system
Adorama has just debuted the Flashpoint StreakLight flash system, bringing an affordable high-power portable flash solution to professional photographers.
The new Flashpoint StreakLight system, available exclusively from Adorama, is built around 360Ws ($549.00) and 180Ws ($405.95) flash units, with interchangeable reflectors and other modifiers that are compatible with Lumedyne and Quantum system accessories. Powered by an external Lithium battery, such as the Flashpoint Blast Power Pack SL-360 ($349.95; exclusively available at Adorama) or Quantum or other power packs, the Streaklight is affordable and lightweight.
Here’s a quick video overview of the Flashpoint Streaklight 360:
The key feature of the Streaklight is its power, which can be adjusted down to 1/128 in 1/3 stops—22 settings—all controlled via a large back dial. All the information is shown on a large LED panel. The 360Ws unit gives off twice the power of a Quantum T5d-R, and its power packs are interchangeable with Quantums. Both versions of the Streaklight come packed with a silver parabolic reflector and stippled metallic interior, and a diffuser disk.
The main difference between the Streaklight and competing Quantum flash models is that the Streaklight only offers a manual output mode, so you’ll need either a good head for calculating guide numbers, or a flash meter such as the Sekonic L-308S Flashmate.
The StreakLight has a bare flash bulb which can be used to light up an entire room, or the light can be controlled via the included reflector or by adding one of many Lumedyne or Quantum compatible light modifiers. You could also modify the light using one of the Flashpoint-brand options, such as the Flashpoint Dome Diffuser, the Glow HexaPop 24” light box, the StreakLight Beauty Dish or a standard reflector, which is included with the flash. Another nice addition? The hot shoe can be removed and replaced with a plate for easy mounting directly on light stands.
While the StreakLight has a built-in optical slave, Flashpoint has also announced a wireless remote and receiver set that can control up to 16 different groups, a huge benefit for wedding photographers.
