Your guide to digital camera scene modes

Sports happen fast. Good shots appear and disappear in the blink of an eye. Even if every scene during a sporting event is a great shot, it can still be difficult capture great images because the participants are usually moving so fast that it’s hard to freeze the action.

That’s why you use the Sports/Action Mode. This mode uses a high shutter speed to stop the action, and makes other appropriate settings to assure correct exposure—including, on some cameras, increasing the ISO sensitivity setting.



But you don’t have to be ringside at a Rangers game to appreciate this setting. Kids playing in the yard, birds flying, pets dashing about--even a simple shot of mom lifting her infant aloft--all of these things share many characteristics with fast moving sports—particularly that subject movement can ruin an otherwise great picture. When facing a scene like one of these, select the Sports/Action Mode (the icon usually resembles a sprinter leaving the starting blocks) and you’ll get excellent results.
