Your guide to digital camera scene modes

By Jon Sienkiewicz

Images intended for Internet auction sites should be fairly small and relatively low resolution. Some cameras have a specific mode for that.

Computer monitors, by default, display images at 72 dpi (dots per inch), so even an image that is standard VGA (640x480 pixels) is big enough to post on a web site. The Auction Mode, found on most Casio compact cameras, automatically chooses the appropriate setting so that you do not need to resize the image before posting. (This mode is also useful if you’re shooting an image that you plan to e-mail—because the file size is also small and manageable.)

Using the Auction Mode, follow these simple steps and your online auction photos are sure to produce results.
  • Use a plain, simple background.
  • Be sure to use the correct white balance setting so that colors appear natural and accurate.
  • Compose carefully. Fill the frame to show details, all accessories—and the flaws. Avoid glare and hot spots caused by overhead lights or bright windows.
  • Turn off the flash.
  • Add something for scale, like a ruler or coin. If you include something that is of a well-known size, like an AC adapter, you can skip the ruler.

No auction action: Can you clearly see the product? No? Neither can your potential bidders!

Going, going... Combining eBay scene mode with good composition practices can help boost bids on Internet auctions.
