Tell your digital grain to shut up

By Mason Resnick

March 11, 2009

Digital noise is a problem for photographers, especially if you're shooting in low light at high ISO settings. The problem is even more pronounced when using a compact camera.

What it does: Nik DFine lets you reduce or even eliminate digital noise while maintaining overall image sharpness. In version 2.0, U Point technology allows you to easily select areas within a photo to reduce noise while leaving other areas alone. You can even apply the lower grain with brushes, or limit it to a specific range of colors. Or, you can use an auto camera profile, which will apply noise reduction based on your camera model.

Who it's for: Photographers who often shoot in low light and use higher ISOs, but need fine image quality, and compact camera users.

What else you need to use it: Mac OS 10.4 or higher, Windows 2000 Pro, XP, or Vista, Adobe Photoshop 7 and above, Elements 2-5 (Windows) or 4 and 6 (Mac), Aperture 2.1 or later.

Cost: $90

Control Points allow you to apply grain reduction to specific areas or range of color.
