3 Things, 2 Photographers, 1 Dream Shoot: What's Your List?
Each week, I ask my guest on the TechTock Podcast these same three questions. What's your list?

Blog TechTock - by Jack Howard, May 28, 2009

I interview all sorts of photographers on our weekly podcast, and the conversations evolve differently, but I always end the podcast with the same three questions. Name 3 things that are always in your camera bag. Tell me 2 photographers whose websites we should go check out right now. And tell me 1 dream shoot you really want to make happen. Now it's your turn....  > Read more

Blog TechTock - by Jack Howard, May 27, 2009

Rich Legg is a full-time microstock photographer. He has a business plan, and works hard to make a living one microstock download at a time. A gold-level exclusive contributor for iStockPhoto, Legg has has over 70,000 images downloaded. Rich and I have a candid conversation on the professional preconceptions about, media misrepresentations of, and realities behind being a full-time microstock photographer. ...  > Read more

Adobe Soundbooth CS4 makes audio editing so easy even I can do it.
This member of the CS4 tribe features advanced audio editing for photographers

Blog TechTock - by Jack Howard, May 22, 2009

Until I started experimenting with Adobe Soundbooth CS4 (from $77.95 for an upgrade) I found audio editing to be tedious, frustrating, and confusing. The problem is that so many audio editing programs are designed, strange as it may seem, by audio experts for audio experts. Not so Adobe Soundbooth CS4. If you're comfortable working in Adobe Photoshop CS4 or Photoshop Elements, you'll probably be able to ramp up pretty quickly to working Soundbooth CS4. (And if you're running CS4 Web Premium, Production Premium, or Master Collection, you've already got Soundbooth!)...  > Read more

The Pentax K-7: The era of in-camera High Dynamic Range Imaging has arrived!
HDR capture mode on this new SLR combines three shots for an estimated 17 stop EV range

Blog TechTock - by Jack Howard, May 20, 2009

It's official. The just-announced Pentax K-7 is the first SLR with true in-camera High Dynamic Range Imaging capabilities. The new flagship of the Pentax line replaces the K20D, and although it has a similarly-sized 14.6 CMOS chip like the K20D, this isn't a simple rebadged incremental upgrade. The K-7 is a brand new camera, with HD video capture, and a host of other new features and functions....  > Read more

TechTock Podcast Episode #4: Grant Gunderson
We're joined this week by the Photo Editor of The Ski Journal.

Blog TechTock - by Jack Howard, May 19, 2009

I first noticed Grant Gunderson's work last summer. I was lazing away an afternoon in the hammock, when the September issue of Skiing magazine arrived. Instead of the normal blue sky and airborne skier, or a superwide angle of a line carved down a crazy steep, this was an amazingly different ski action shot: It's night, the skier is super-close to the camera and there are great arcs of star trails in the sky, and carlight trails around the village below. Best of all, the cover folded out, as shown, to make the presentation even stronger. This is the sort of shot that gets your attention, because is it so technically excellent in so many different ways....  > Read more

Quick look: Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3
Panasonic's newest ultrazoom is pretty close to being a perfect pocket point and shoot.

I'll admit it, I've been a fan of the Panasonic's pocketable double-digit zooms since the original Lumix DMC-TZ1 with its big owl eye of a Leica DC lens back a few years ago. And the newest Lumix in this lineage, the DMC-ZS3 with its 25-300mm equiv. 12x Mega Optical Image Stabilized Leica DC optics, 10.1 megapixel still output, 720p HD video capture with stereo audio, 460K dot 3-inch LCD, and a host of other features is pretty darn close to being a perfect pocket point and shoot digicam. ...  > Read more

Why Not Today?
Sometimes the only thing stopping us is ourselves.

For years, I’d been meaning to send a note to a specific photographer whose work has had a profound impact on my career, life, and overall philosophical outlook. And it was one of those things that always seems to get pushed into the perpetual tomorrow pile. The problem being, of course, that tomorrow never comes....  > Read more
