I just wrapped up judging the April 2009 clip contest for the Illinois Press Photographer's Assocation, and it got me to thinking about my newspaper days, monthly clips contests, and photo contests in general. I truly enjoyed the hour or so I spent browsing through the 140 some-odd images entered by IPPA members, and I selected images that I truly thought stood out in each of the three categories, taking into account both subject matter and technical expertise shown in the images. There were some great moments captured well which finished in my top slots, there were some OK shots for day-to-day publication, and then there were some real dogs in the mix....  > Read more

For years, my trusty Epson Stylus 2200 was my only home printer. It always pained me to use my costsly photo and matte black inks for wholly necessary, but totally pedestrian plain-paper printing tasks such as directions to assignments and shopping lists. The original intent of tilt-shift optics was to correct for perspective problems by allowing the lens elements to go off-parallel with the capture plane. New school shooters have taken swinging optics to new heights by exaggerating perspective and simulating miniature macro 'scapes. And Canon's new ultrawide 17mm TS-E f/4L should make shooters of both styles very happy....  > Read more
