Students at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication and E.W. Scripps School of Journalism address the question: What is the Soul of Athens?

By Jack Howard

June 2, 2009

The narrated slideshow is a great example of the evolution of web-based photojournalism. And there are many interesting examples of this form on the 2009 Soul of Athens website.

The project surveys a great deal of the physical and mental landscape of Ohio University's rural county from hardscrabble farming to friday night football; music from bluegrass to hiphop; challenging social issues to campus club sports and more.

Some of the essays in Soul of Athens are stronger than others in both visual impact and production, but each essay offers another facet of life in this corner of Appalachia. It's well worth a visit to the site to take a visit with these up-and-coming photojournalists.
