We take Sigma's 300-800mm f/5.6 Supertelephoto Zoom lens out for a spin at the Turtleback Zoo

By Jack Howard

January 19, 2010

Affectionately called the "Sigmonster" by fans, this unique supertele zoom gives a lot of reach for dayside sports, wildlife and action photography. Jack and Mason set their sights on wolves, elk, buffalo and penguins in this TechTock video field test.

Time to start saving my money

Nicely "educating" video. I, too, would like to have seen some action focusing, FrancoSP. Maybe by the time I have saved the 1000s of $$$ for one, they will have added the focus limiter. As a wildlife photographer, I find the focus limiter extremely useful. I also find this lens to be highly interesting because of the price. I have the Nikon 200-400 VR f4 and use it almost ALL the time and add the TC1.4x to it.

Good for all dayside action

Franco, I've shot Div 1 College Baseball and had no trouble tracking action at bases, and tracked flying birds with this lens. AF is very responsive. But if it searches, the lack of a focal length limiter can increase AF times sometimes.

Just for still animals?

Nice presentation and for sure a nice lens much more affordable than a Nikon or Canon 600mm lens. But how fast is the autofocusing in real action photography? That is something I would like to know.

Jack at the Zoo

Unbelievable viddy. I go nuts when I see someone else as interested in playing with Photog toys, especially when they're so big. Jack, don't ever feel ashamed of feeling like a kid. Screw the critics. Who are they? Fat talkers that do nothing. Great Video!

Huge lens.

I really enjoyed your presentation of the Sigma. So how about doing one on the Nikon 600mm, on a Nikon D90. I'd love to see that. Thanks and keep up the reports we love them.

Sigma delivers

Enjoyed the footage and shots immensely. I bought a Sigma 18-200mm Canon OS lens. It's sharpness was off so I sent it in for repair. Sigma was very cooperative and took it down and rebuilt it and focused it perfectly. It came back as a super sharp lens. So I can say I'm a Sigma fan. For telephoto I use a Tamron 200-500mm f/5.6 with my canon t1i. Much less expensive but very adequate. Keep up the reports they are very helpful.

The Monster Mash

Great little intro to a lens that I will never own (unless I get tired of macro and/or get a divorce!). Sure would be fun to play with, however. Thanks, guys.

Looks like fun!

Nice job guys, that was a fun video because the Sigmonster is out of reach (price wise) for most of us.
