Canon: EOS-1D Mark III AF woes over
Canon yesterday posted an update for EOS-1D Mark III customers stating that, after making AF mirror adjustments and firmware updates, the camera's AF "performed better in our tests than all previous EOS camera models." The camera, which was pulled off retailer shelves for a short time last year to have adjustments made, was plagued by autofocus problems under some conditions.
After numerous customer complaints and comments on camera user forums, Canon identified the problem--a flaw with the mirror mechanism--which was causing inconsistent focusing accuracy and focus tracking of moving subjects when the camera was in AI-Servo AF and continuous shooting modes. Starting in November 2007, Canon offered to repair the affected cameras free of charge.
Here is the text of the Canon update announcement:
"After the AF mirror Adjustment, including the updated firmware version 1.1.3, the EOS-1D Mark III AF function performed better in our tests than all previous EOS camera models.
"Canon strives at all times to continuously improve our products in order to provide our customers with the best performance and value.
"We are aware that some customers have raised questions about the performance of the EOS-1D Mark III AF system under certain conditions. We will continue to investigate, and look for opportunities to improve, the performance of the AF system to ensure the satisfaction of all of our customers"
