12MP compact digital camera announced
More megapixel madness: Foxconn, a Taiwan-based OEM camera maker that manufactures cameras for BenQ, Minox, Vivitar and others, has announced a compact digital camera with a 1/1.8-inch, 12 megapixel CCD sensor. The DS-C350 is the first compact camera with a 1/1.8-inch sensor with such a high pixel count.
Other features include a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, 3x zoom, 15 scene modes, and movie recording capabilities, as well as anti-shake technology and exposure compensation. The DS-C350's ISO sensitivity range is 50-400, but that relatively modest range is not likely to prevent a lot of grain from appearing on the images it produces.
Companies that market this model under their names will likely emphasize the high pixel count as "ultra-high resolution" and that this is a good thing. But as we've stated before, typical compact camera users do not need more than 6-7MP resolution. More could be overkill at best, and detrimental to overall image quality at worst.
