Micron completes purchase of Lexar
In a flash, Lexar is no more--and Micron is an instant contender in the world-wide flash memory business. The $850 million sale, completed yesterday, means photographers will likely soon be putting Micron memory cards in their digital cameras instead of Lexar, and that these cards may cost less.
Before the deal, Micron was known as one o fthe world's DRAM (dynamic RAM) chip makers; DRAM is one of the key components of NAND flash memory cards and sticks. The acquisition of Lexar, which made memory cards but had to purchase DRAM from outside vendors (including Micron), lets Micron control every aspect of its NAND business, which is expected to result in lower prices.
Lexar shareholders approved the Micron agreement last week, and Lexar common stock stopped trading on the Nasdaq market at the close of business Wednesday.
