Jill Waterman and Daryl-Ann Saunders
This Workshop is held in conjunction with the group photography exhibition Night Moves, co-curated by Ms. Waterman and Ms. Saunders, in two neighboring Brooklyn spaces: Farmani and Safe-T Galleries from March 5 - April 11, 2009.
Important: The first Workshop session will be held at Safe-T Gallery, 111 Front Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn. On Sunday March 15, from 2:30PM to 5:30PM, the instructors will present an indoor classroom segment covering both the fundamentals of night photography and techniques used in the images on exhibit. From 5:30PM-6:30PM, the group will move to a local restaurant for a light dinner break, after which everyone will set out on a night photography shoot in Brooklyn or Manhattan from 6:30PM-10:00PM.
(Final shoot location to be determined based on projected weather conditions and site logistics. Meal cost and transportation is not included in the Workshop fee).
Follow up session to review images will be held at the Adorama Building on Sun., March 22 from 10:30AM-12:30PM.
Join us for this introduction to capturing the city in a different light. This
Workshop provides a detailed exploration of photography after dark through a mix of classroom presentation and shooting at night in NYC. We will begin the Workshop with a classroom segment and a gallery tour, where participants will learn the tools and techniques used to photograph at night, as well as the conceptual foundation of night photography. In addition to covering night photography fundamentals from the book Night and Low Light Photography and discussing images from the Night Moves exhibition, the instructors will present images created on location in the sites where participants will shoot later that night.
Technical and practical topics addressed in the classroom include: equipment considerations, ways to estimate nighttime exposures, color temperature and mixed lighting situations, digital image noise and how to interpret a histogram, framing and compositional considerations at night, light painting tools and techniques, plus practical methods to convey a distinctive atmosphere. After the classroom/gallery segment, and a short dinner break, you’ll be off on an adventure, applying what you learned, and discovering a few of the many spectacular sites in New York that are the perfect locations for night and low light photography.
This is an ideal course for any photographer with an interest to explore the world after dark. Attendees should be familiar with the basic functions of their camera, which can be either a digital or film-based model with full manual exposure capabilities, plus a cable release and tripod. Do remember to bring more memory cards (or film) and especially more batteries than you think you will use.
A complete list of optional night photography accessories and further details about the shoot location will be provided to registered attendees by email on March 9, 2009.
For this Workshop, please make sure to dress comfortably and in weather appropriate clothing, since we will be outside shooting after dark for several hours on the first night.
Level: Advanced beginner and up
