Comments about Nikon Nikon 12 x 42 Monarch ATB, Water Proof Roof Prism Binocular with 5.0 Degree Angle of View, U.S.A.:
A couple weeks ago, I bought Nikon Monarch 12*42 from WalMart for [$]. Because I have other binoculars I decided to put them all to the resolution accuracy test. So, I have four binoculars: porro prism IR Vision 8*40 which I bought 10 years ago for [$]; porro prism Praktica 10*25 UCA which I bought used for [$]: porro prism Pentax 12*50 PCF V which I bought new a couple years ago for [$] and a now new roof prism Nikon Monarch 12*42 I tested resolution of all four binoculars with: USAF 1951 brightly illuminated target and at distance 330”. All binoculars were securely mounted on the tripod. Results: IR Vision --1-1, Praktica -1-2; Pentax -1-2, Nikon -1-3. Who is not familiar with USAF target tests I can mention that Nikon has about 25% better resolution then IR Vision and about 12% better then Practika or Pentax.By brightness, I can put these binoculars in this descending order: Nikon, Pentax, Practika and IR Vision. In other words, Nikon is the brightest and IR Vision is the darkest. One can draw his/her own conclusions.
