I had a Panasonic FZ 28 before this camera. The High ISO pictures were not very high in quality so I decided to save my pennies for a DSLR. I bought an EOS 40D camera used about 1 year ago. I ran into the cursed "error 99" message, so I returned it to be fixed. I was given an opportunity to get another 40D as a replacement, so I took advantage of the opportunity. It is a solid camera, which I prefer, so I know I am holding a REAL camera.

I bought a 70-200mm F4.0L USM with it, but No IS. Some of the pictures are absolutely stunning in detail, and color while others are just good snapshots. Many of the bad photos were due to my error. In the High Speed continuous setting, maybe one out of 10 shots will not be in focus, but the shots on either side of the bad photo are in focus.

Most of the photography I do is Sports and Theatre. It handles both well. The major challange in sports trying to keep up with speed of the action. In theatre, the problem is lighting. You have very HIGH contrast light or just plain dark. The 40D handles the speed for sports photography well, although sometimes is slips from the 6.5 frames/second after only 10 pictures. That could be due to card speed or some other factor I am not aware of because at other times, the rate stays at 6.5 fps for more than 40 frames (that when I stop taking pictues.) The theatre lighting problem of High contrast is more difficult to over come. I try underexposing so you don't blow out the highlights, and then adjusting the picture in some post production program.

All in all I really like the camera with one minor acception. The shutter release button sometimes doesn't release the shutter. Even when it is in focus. I may have to send it in to have it checked out.

I like refurbs! I figure they've been through the QC process twice. The Canon 40D is my main camera, used every day. This refurb body has performed flawlessly, 30,000+ exposures to date. It was purchased as an upgrade from a well-used 30D, and is a substantially better camera. The viewscreen is a major improvement, and Live View has become a critical feature in my shooting process. I only wish the CMOS was less noisy; that will have to wait until I can afford to upgrade to a 7D. I have a Canon G11 with the tilt/swivel feature, as the 50D has, and find I do not use it much at all.Adorama [...] pricing for this purchase was outstanding,[...]I highly recommend them as a camera/electronics provider.

For the last few years, this camera has been a trusted, reliable friend. When I add another body (I'll keep this one when I do), it will only be due to changes in technology offering more options in newer models (video, for example). This camera has performed wonderfully over the years and I believe it will continue to serve me well for some time to come. When I acquire a new body, this one won't be left at home.

I have trouble finding a "con" to associate with this camera. Any "cons" that I think of are by comparison with new models and it's not really fair to judge this camera against new models.

Extremely versatile camera with excellent image quality. It's good for just about any situation an enthusiast photographer might find him/herself in. By now, this camera is a bit outdated (no video, and not high enough ISO range), but worth every penny if you're looking for high quality pictures form a versatile and durable camera. Battery life has also proven to be exceptional.

If I hadn't seen the plain white "Canon Refurbished" box, I'd have never known it wasn't new. Everything in the box was in extraordinarily good condition. I checked the shutter count, and was surprised that it was less than 200. I used it extensively over the past 3 weeks, and it's been great so far.

Great camera! CR gave it great reviews. Some limits by the 10 mp sensor but I bought it as a "Remanufactured by Canon" camera for about half of it's original price (in 2007), which was a great deal for me and made it possible to own the 40D rather than a lessor camera. Except for the "lug weight", I love it so far on a 4000 mile trip in the eastern USA for fall 2009 photos. It does many things my former camera would not do, including taking great photos at 800 ISO.

you can't go wrong with 40D.
The only con about this is that the LCD is bad in my opinion. But if you're one of those people that don't look at the screen as much, it'll be find for you to check composition, etc...

I used this camera as my primary camera. I shoot mainly sports photography, but shoot also shoot portraits and landscapes. I will be fully using this camera for remote firing when basketball season rolls around.

I plan on getting at least 2 more. I love the fact that it has a 3" LCD, easier on the eyes to preview a photo from the camera than previous models. The burst rate is great for the sports photography that I do. While I have tested a Mark III and OWN a 1D, this camera serves great for both a primary and back-up camera.

I bit the bullet and ordered a refurbished 40D from Adorama as I couldn't justify the extra cost for the 50D. I couldn't be happier that I did. The unit came in the original box with all the original paperwork. Not a scratch, ding, or dent anywhere on the unit. It is a great camera and one that I now have to master.

This is my first DSLR. A friend helped me picked the 40D. After reading all the reviews of refurbished 40D and Adorama being a reputable company, we decided to give it a try. We could not be happier. There was no dust or damage to the sensor. Shutter count was 3300. The exterior was in mint condition. So buying a refurbished camera allowed us to get a really nice sigma lens at the same time and still be within our budget. I am now able to take wonderful portraits of my children with this camera. I would not hesitate to buy refurbished product from Adorama again.

I have been holding off on buying a DSLR for years now, I have a Canon EOS 1N rs, and an A2 with several lenses. I am a loyal Canon customer, and knew I only wanted a Canon DSLR. I didn't want to "settle" on just any DSLR, so when the 40D was introduced, it was everything i wanted in a DSLR. It took a few years, but I finally got my "dream camera". Although it was a refeb unit, I couldn't be more happy. I also picked up a vertical grip at the same time (used in E+ condition). The 40D and grip is the perfect upgrade from my film EOS system.

My purchase experience from Adorama was flawless. The camera and grip were as advertised and I feel I got the best deal possible. Believe me I shopped around for weeks! I will be shopping Adorama, for my future purchaes.

I shoot mostly sports photograpy and the 6.5 fps is fantastic for capturing that hard to get action picture. The Canon 40D, was for me, a seamless transition from my EOS 1N film camera to digital photography.

Worked great for over 3 mos and then I received the dreaded "err 99" error. The camera worked great up until then, so I'm not sure what happened.

For the most part, the 40D rocks! It's a refurb and this sort of stuff is bound to happen.

Well, this is happened barely 3 mos after I initially purchased it (which is their max days for returns/exchanges). It was probably about 2 weeks after. After talking to the CS rep for a few minutes and w/o a whole lot of fanfare (ie...me yelling or complaining) they approved an exchange no questions asked.

I just received it today, so I'm anxious to get home and start snapping pics.

Now if this thing goes belly up again, then I'll be singing a different tune next time...haha

I went to the store to see for myself how the refurb model looked - they gave me the box and the camera was indistinguishable from a new model. Cosmetically flawless. Sales guy claimed that these refurbs were not "post-consumer" - never owned previously, but used for Canon's own promotional purposes. Who knows the real story but it looked brand new except for the refurb box. All accessories (Charger, battery, strap, etc.) appeared to be new. Mine had 1900 actuations on it. Great price for an essentially new 40D.

I did a lot of research and decided to buy the Canon EOS 40D and so far so good. It is a refurbished unit and I read so many reviews from others here at Adorama about their refurbished cameras and how happy they were. I am glad I bought a refurb. The price was the best around and you cannot tell it apart from a new camera and I know that it has been put thru the paces by Canon. I am new to digital crossing over from years of film cameras and I am loving it!! I love the instantaneous feedback from the LCD screen.

Adorama is great, all my gear arrived as promised within 3 days. I also bought a 2nd body and A Tamron 28-75 zoom-love it, and a grip and a Canon 50mm nifty fifty lens and a 28 to 135 Canon zoom and extra batteries and flash cards and my wife bought me a Domke bag.

I read so many reviews here at the Adorama site that were so helpful in my decisions on what gear to purchase. I cannot thank all of the reviewers and Adorama enough. My next purchase is going to be a Canon 70-200 L zoom...can't wait. Thanks for everything!!

While it is pretty much the same generation camera as the XSi, it is a serious upgrade. I love both continuous speed drives, and have only had to break out high speed once so far. Thanks to the high speed mode I'm catching shots on the ball field, or @ the skatepark and @ cycling events that I was dropping before. love the speed of the burst for birds, bugs. love the focus system, much much improved over the rebel xt. weight is good, build is good. very easy to learn to use coming from rebel series. shutter is a little louder than i anticipated. live preview isn't all that useful for me, maybe i'll use it more later.
the reburb is great, looks and acts brand new, had 137 shutter clicks.

It came down to a decision between a new Rebel Xsi or a refurb 40d. I went with the 40d and could not be happier with the camera. Works flawlessly out of the box. I can't find any physical issues with the camera body, lens, or more importantly with functionality. I purchased as a kit through Adorama as Eos 40d + 18-135mm IS lens. I will order from Adorama again, and I will absolutely recommend a Canon refurb product from them to anyone who cares to listen.

I am still getting familiar with the controls on where to change various settings, but that's an issue with me, not the camera.

This model was purchased to replace a Canon EOS 10D. I appreciate that Canon adds features and makes improvements without reinventing the wheel. I appreciate that all the primary controls are in the same place as always so I don't have to retrain. The advances in features between the two models is great. I love the big lcd with adjustable brightness. It's nice to be able to get a better idea, in the field, of what is being captured. I love the power on speed. I love the joystick and rear AF. I love the higher speed on the continuous shutter. I love the live view and look forward to using the magnified live view on macros and with long lenses for fine focusing control. Of course, I love the extra pixels, too. There are many more advances that I am enjoying as well...[...]I will definitely buy refurbished Canon equipment again from Adorama when I am next able to make purchases.

I bought this camera as an upgrade from by XT hoping that the speed and the form would be worth it. They definitely are. The feel of this camera is great, and the increased speed, auto-focus, and extra dial on the back are nice for manual control.

Those comments merely relate to the difference between a Rebel and the XXD series. As for being refurbished, the camera's quality is outstanding. I can't distinguish it from the new ones I've seen. Totally worth it.

This is more of a review on 'New' vs. 'Refurbished' than it is on the actual camera.
I am very pleased with deciding to go refurb and using the money I saved for a better lens. I would suggest buying the adorama kit/pkg as it comes with a bunch of extras plus a 2 yr warranty that is much cheaper to buy together than separately.

The camera arrived sooner than I expected. I would easily believe it was brand new, but it was refurbished. Everything was included--all neatly wrapped as if fresh from factory.
I am using it already for indoor volleyball. The gyms are not all that bright and I am using the EF-S 50-250 IS lens which is not fast at all. (4-5.6, I think) So I am pushing the ISO to 3200, or "H". I zoom the lens to about 120mm--keeping it still about F-4 and use a shutter speed of 1/320 sec. These resulting photo's seem a little under exposed, but I kind of expect that--pushing the ISO to the limit. After running the photos thru Lightroom with auto-tone, the results look great--and then I batch process everything with anti-noise plugins and just love the final results...

Hey, at 1/320, the action is froze perfectly--even the ball and hand movements come out good--sometimes just a bit of motion blur. I might try a stop slower and use ISO 1600, but am satisfied with what I have done so far.

Getting a fast 2.8 telezoom would be a great choice if I decide to add the weight and expense...

I can't find any difference from a new one. it came with everything except the box and a refurbished sticker. it's very clean, and f22 shot of sky looks clean-no dust in the sensor. The shutter click is very low also. Put my 24-105 on it and did a lots of tests, and very happy with this purchase.

An excellent replacement for my Canon A2. I have put off moving to digital since I wanted all the Pro features of my A2 but the cost kept me away. This Canon refurb delivers on every promise. Upon receipt of the camera, I went to a local pro shop to get case. They checked out my 'refurb' and pronounced it 'a perfect example' of Canon's commitment to deliver a first class product.
Ray at Adorama put my concerns to rest by explaining their return policy. I can promise this, Adorama won't get this camera back because I love it.

This is a great camera for shooting events. I have shot at ASA 640, 800 & 1600 with no issues as far as image quality goes. Much cleaner (less noise) than the 10D files at ASA 400 & 1600. Also having the ability to shoot raw and a seperate jpeg file is great when you need to make prints on the fly at your event(s), but want the raw files for more detailed processing later. I have only had the camera for about a month, so I'm still learning all of the ins and outs of it. The 40D cost less than half of what my 10D did back in 2003, yet the value in features is much more. It's a great camera for the price I paid which was well under $1K. I have no complaints.
