Comments about Canon Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera Body Kit, 15.1 Megapixels, Black with EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens:

I use the camera to acquire photos to illustrate free-lance articles. Generally, it's a fine camera, but the operation, like that of many of the digital cameras, is horrendously complicated. I would prefer a much simpler camera with comparable ability to produce high quality images.

If it is moving, standing, breathing or beautiful it is fun to record for others to enjoy! The 50d has really been a delight. I wish that I could have had a tool like this a long time ago.

I have NOT owned any DSLRs before, and I have only started getting interested in photography a year ago(it feels a lot more) with Canon Powershot S5 IS. I occasionally(depending on topics) attend our school's photo club meetings. Most of the time though I learn about photography from my own experience, reading books, talking to photographers, reading online reviews, articles, etc.Even though this is my first 50D, I have done an extensive research before spending [$](with extreme iv CF card) and knew all of the possible pros and cons with this model. Many times I was going to stop at 40D and just be happy with it. But since I was planning on digging deeper into the photography (and I had money) it seemed that 50D would be more bang-for-a-buck, and longer term investment. My next focus will be on collecting the right lens(as anyone should expect himself doing after getting into DSLRs)Anyway, the camera camera came as promised, and 18-200mm IS even though having an evident barrel distortion(which I personally find very creative tool to play with) and other optical compromises, it just works as fine as it can get. Its IS system helps a lot, and it is pretty bright lens at wide angle. The only thing I think I really am missing is the USM that 18-200mm does not have. Also Canon could have supplied it with lens hood. The camera body, is just so sturdy, very well built, very comfortable to shoot with, very responsive, intuitive in control. The noise issue between 40D and 50D I cannot tell anything, but compared to the P&S cameras, 50D is just GREAT! I can shoot at ISO 1600, handheld, with limited light sources, and still get pretty decent results. Sometimes, I peek into the pixels (100% crop), and only then, I realized that maybe going above ISO 800 in general is a bad idea. Though the noise level is not apparent when not pixel peeking. Great Product!

I've owned a 1D, 30D, 40D, Rebel XT, Rebel Xti and I currently own a 5D as well as my 50D. This 50D is the BEST camera I've ever owned. I say this with the understanding that I use my 50D as my "2nd" body (my 5D is primary because of it's full-frame capability).

The 50D is my favorite because of it's superior speed, ease of use, low noise and the ability to use batteries and grip from my 40D. The new CMOS allows for brighter and more complete photos.

What has impressed me are the obvious advances made in Canon's whole line of Pro DSLRs offered at reasonable prices. I've found that Canon offers innovative and cost-effective products for a photographer at any level of expertise, from newbie to expert/professional.

I read the previous review of the 50D. From the sound of that person's issues with his camera, it appears he bought a "lemon". This happens with even the most carefully manufactured product. So, keep an open mind when considering the 50D. After all, my experience was the absolute opposite of that of the other reviewer's, for this fact alone, you need to have an open mind when considering this camera.

All in all, I highly and enthusiastically recommend the Canon 50D. I don't believe you will ever regret your decision to purchase it.

Since my 40D was under repair for the second time in less than a year and was not going to be back on time for a Wedding, I decided to buy the 50D. Big mistake. I took less than 25 pictures at the Bride's house when the camera froze with the message "Error 99" (Luckily I had the 20D with me to continue shooting)
A week later I called Canon, they send me to their website to download an update to correct the Error 99 problem.
I haven't had that problem in two months now, but the colors are way off even if switch the camera to different settings. And very often I get over and under exposed images for no reason at all.
The lens that came with it, the new 18-200, gives me out of focus images about 30% to both sides of the picture. In another words, only 40% of the center of the picture is focused. I'm planning to call Canon and mention these two issues, I'll keep you posted about their answer.
Bottom line: DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA
