The 5D is still such a great camera, even in late 2009. I use it alongside a 1D Mark III and it performs VERY well and in certain circumstance such as portraits or fun DOF pics, I actually prefer the 5D. Makes your 24-70L wide, makes your 85mm1.8 and 135mmf2 shine.
It would be nice to have a AF point array and AF speed/accuracy of the 1 series cameras but then we'd pay one series pricing.
All in all, a great camera, be it primary or back up body!

The most outstanding feature I like about this camera is that it does not stand out as a big pro-camera, but yet it is one. It runs so smooth it is like making pictures with butter instead of a camera. For what I do, this camera fills all of my needs, plus.
I do not have any cons on this product. You have to study the Manuel, learn the workings of the camera. Get to understand what settings are suitable for your picture taking. Then learn to change the settings when you enter a different photographic environment. Every camera has different idiosyncrasies that we either adapt to, or call it a con and move on to the the next model

I have the Canon 20D, the 40D, and I just purchased the 5D last month. I wanted the 5D for the medium format feature. After working with the 40D for over a year, it was a lit bit of a step back to the 5D. The LCD is smaller on the 5D, and the features are just a little older than the 5D. It is a BIT disappointing, BUT, I love the picture quality than I have with the 5D. After reading reviews, I felt that the 40D and 5D would be very similar, but I do notice a bit better quality/picture with the 5D. All in all, I am very pleased with it, but if had the dough, definitely would have opted for the 5D Mark.

I came from the 350D crop at 8mps and it is a fine camera. But the first thing that I noticed is that my pictures had more punch with the 5D. I can shoot my Canon 50 1.4 with ease now wide open. And my Canon 85 1.8 lens looks like L glass when shot at apertures like 3.5, 3.2, and 2.5; One can shoot wider but greater care is required in being still in order to get a focused shot. I would feel very comfortable doing a wedding with this camera. I would probably use the 85 1.8 at around the 3.2 aperture for ceremony shots. I know I would have a lot of keepers. The 5D is great for night shooting too. 3200 ISO works real nice. 5D II is better lets not kid ourselves mainly because of the ability to crop endlessly but more often than not the average person would not be able to tell the difference to a portrit due to minimal post processing. The 5D is a great camera and in my opinion better than the 15 megapixel crop cameras and I do respect them as well!

I will get the down and dirty out of the way quickly: this thing is phenomenal, go buy one right now, then come back and read the review.

Buy this camera for the image quality, as no other small format (35 mm form factor) camera equals it in this regard, including those priced four times as much. The key is the full size image sensor with only 12.8 megapixels packed into it. This means that the individual pixels are larger than on any other camera of its size. Larger pixels equal greater resolving power, brighter, more saturated colors, and greater contrast. Comparing this to a crop sensor camera is like comparing a 645 to a 35 back in film's heyday. Yes, the images are that much better.

The other advantage of larger pixels is greater light-gathering ability. While it is only rated for ISO 50-3200, you can cheat it to 12,500 and beyond, and still get recognizable images. From ISO 50 to 3200, this is at least the equal of any other camera (with the possible exception of the Nikon D3--I haven't used it yet, so I can't say). Image quality is excellent up through 1600, and noise is certainly visible, but not terribly objectionable even at 3200. Image quality degrades quickly beyond that, though.

A fantastic feature found only on high-end cameras, but incredibly useful to advanced amateur and professional photographers is the ability to set the ISO speed in 1/3 stop increments. For those who wish to grow with a camera, but expect to need greatness later, the "full auto" mode is fantastic, offering not only automatic shutter speed and aperture, but also automatic ISO adjustment on the fly to help keep the exposures within handhold ability.

The Digic II processor is not as quick, clean, or accurate as the new Digic III, but it is more than adequate for most professional uses. The only real downside to this camera is the lack of speed compared to many other DSLR's of today, but is only a problem for sports and bird photographers. Portrait, wedding, and landscape photographers on a limited budget cannot do better than the Canon EOS 5D.

- I first start using 1DII for 3 years then down grade to full frame 5D with the one reason is FULL FRAME. That's all

- Menu a little old fashion compare with the new model

- LCD is just OK but not good as Nikon D3 but better than Canon 40D

Nice Body. Good resolution. Relatively wide ISO range. I had a problem with sensor dust until I learned to treat my 5D like a patient with an open wound. Color noise in dark image areas remains a problem. I am still looking for a good color noise filter that does not kill too much detail.
Low light photography requires high ISO but no higher than necessary. I wish for an auto ISO option where you set exposure and aperture and let the camera do the ISO. I am hoping to find all this in the new 5D.

I have not used every digital camera out there. However, from every camera I've seen thus far, the 5D is the best Portrait Camera I've found. IMO equal or better than the 1d mkII in direct comparison and blatantly better than my xti. I LOVE THIS CAMERA. You do give up some speed, so it's not as well suited for Sports Photography as it's big brothers. For everything else the PQ is mighty hard to beat for the money or much much more. Size and weight are also just perfect to me. The price has been dropping with anticipation of a mk2 model. I seriously doubt PQ would be improved and more likely it will be simply "frills" such as a sensor cleaning (ala xti). I haven't had any problems with dust yet after 3 months so I'm happy with lower pricing and USING A 5D NOW instead of waiting to pay more for a few features in another 9 months that likely won't affect much. 4.5 stars knocking off .5 for AF speed in certain low light situations.

i am a seasoned and devoted canon digital shooter going back to the original D-30 (not the current 30D, but the one introduced in 2000. btw, where do they get these naming schemes from?) the 5D is clearly an overall winner. the image quality is outstanding; in particular the rendition of skin tones which for people-shooters like myself makes all the difference in world. the large file size offers enough digital information to allow some pretty extreme cropping if necessary and still leaves you with a printable image. originally purchased as a back-up for my 1D-Mark II, the 5D has actually become my body of first choice. whether it can withstand the heavy use i give it, only time will tell. what i do NOT like about this camera is the auto-focus; not just in low light when it is essentially useless, but in back-lit situations as well. indeed, any time the focus point is set off center, the camera gets really confused. for some reason, the sensor seems to have an almost magnetic attraction for dust. it seems to experience this problem far more than any other DSLR i've owned. nevertheless, it's an awfully fine tool for the money.

This camera is lightweight (until you add the battery grip), comfortable in your hand, and very adapt to wedding photographing. The ability to shift white balance settings, use a custom registered list of camera settings, and the film mimic profiles make this a great on the go wedding camera. It also has the unbeatable image quality of a full frame sensor. No lens conversion factor! It renders skin tones well and appears to have better dynamic range than any aps-c sized digital camera I have ever used. If your looking for good quality and don't want to spend the [$] for the 1ds mk 11 look no further.

Alright already -- we know its a great camera by the previous 60+ reviewers, so heres what I wish it had if I wrote a letter to Mr. Canon himself:- Can we see an ultrasonic dust removal system like the Rebel Xti ? Probablly in the works as we speak.- I know some pros turn their noses up at a built-in flash, but its no fun carrying this around all day w/a speedlite flash protruding from the top either.- No weather-sealing ? How about me trading in that "Print" button on the camera body no one uses and giving me some seals ?- Tough time with accurate focusing in low-light situations w/o an external flash. I've spent over a week with my Canon 5D now....it's not a steep learning curve in getting used to all its features. The most important exposure and focus controls are all at your fingertips. And I love how you can have lots of manual control: even setting up your own custom exposure and color temp settings. This is my forray into digital: before, I just had my old Canon AE-1 from high school and college photo classes. There was no reason to upgrade to film based EOS system with the simple and tough AE-1. With the full sized digital sensor, I knew that this would be the digital camera that could better it!

With the 70-200 2.8f IS lense it is a bit Heavy, but it takes great photos.

Great camera and at 12.8 megapixels is excellent for enlargements. Big LCD panel is nice, easy to use. Only negative is it does not have it's own built in flash (and professional cameras can include this!) which is nice for fill and so on.

I bought this camera for my wife who uses it professionally. The 30D just could not hold a candle to the noise handling or skin-tone rendering of the 5D. There are, however, things I would have liked to see with this camera. Weather sealing for a $[...] camera should have been a no-brainer. I also think that Canon should get creative and include radio transmitters in their high-end bodies to trigger flash units remotely. (That isnt a flaw of the camera...just thought I would throw that out there, as it's hard to find many flaws with this camera). With that said...there is not much out there that can compete with the image quality that this camera can produce.

The reason to buy a 5D is for its smooth tonality and color rendition, very much like med. format images. Resolution is very fine too. Available light photographers will love this camera! Resolution is top notch, color saturation is very good, camera is fast and easy to use. I found dust spects in the view finder of all cameras sent to me (3), luckily they do not appear on the image. Focusing is better than the 10D, but still has some trouble in low light situations.

There is a 'smoothness' to the images that this camera produces that rivals (or beats) the results I got with my 645. The files are big enough for all of my uses, but not so big that they pose storage or workflow issues. The camera body has a feel that is really solid (compared to the 20D and 30D) and the controls are obvious and ergonomic (like the other Canon DSLRs). For some reason the focusing screen and viewfinder seem especially susceptible to dust... and the sensor is also very attractive to dust... moreso than any other DSLRs I've used. All in all, a really amazing camera. If Canon included the anti-dust mechanisms (like the Rebel has) to this camera it would be flawless.

Have used this camera for several months now and it performs flawlessly. Sensitivity on colors is better then the 1DS Mark II. 2.5 inch back screen is bright and good for most quick reviews. Little or no noise even up to 800 ISO and it is FULL frame which is great for those wide shots. Now that the Contax N series glass can be adapted to Canon EOS there may be no better landscape camera unless you want to pop for an H3.

Hasn't solved the instrinsic problems of low-light photography with a digital sensor (too easy to introduce artifacting via the needed processing of dim shots). But everything else else fine for an emerging pro shooter: big bright viewfinder and LCD screen, very accessible fine-tuning controls (such as for exposure and flash compensation), and excellent uncorrected image quality. Given 12+ MP, and a more compact package, there's little need to be tempted by the larger, heavier models.

The Olympus E-1 has much better ergonomics however the resolution, high ISO capability, and "full frame" sensor make the 5D well worth its cost. Ultra-wide digital lenses have limited availability (Zuiko 7-14 is an incredible lens) making the 5D a valuable way to use lenses such as Nikon 15/3.5, Zuiko 18mm, and Zuiko 24mm perspective control.

I bought this camera after I had been the happy owner of an EOS 10D for several years. I did not expect the huge increase in spead powering up and focusing and the tremendously improved image sensor (over a camera I tought was very good already). Even at high ISO speeds, there is virtually no color noise. Low light image quality is good, but the camera does have problems focusing in that circumstance. The previously included IR sensor has been omitted from this camera since it has no build in flash. When using the dedicated Canon 580EX speedlite though, this problem is completely overcome.
I took this camera on an extended trip to Europe last summer, and had no technical or photographic problems.
I highly recommend this camera for anybody with more then just a casual interest in photography.

I love this camera. It even takes great aerial photos without having to adjust settings. The only downside is learning how to take great pictures in low lighting environments.

I love the 5D. The picture quality as compared to my old 10D is night and day. The noise, even when shooting at ISO 1600, is very manageable. I've even had ISO 3200 shots turn out useable after a session with noise ninja.

The fact that it has a full frame sensor is both good and bad. Good, in that wide angle shots are not artificially zoomed, which is great for landscapes. Also the relatively huge sensor is one reason that noise is so low. Bad, in that I find I miss the extra reach when shooting wildlife. On my 10D, my 100-400 was really a 160-640. That's a lot of extra reach. I am toying with the idea of getting a 30D to add to my camera bag for long telephoto work.

The Canon EOS 5D has many of the features of Canon's top of the line camera at about 1/3 the price. It also has the same dimensions as a traditional SLR. Somewhat make me miss my old A-1. Has many features that aren't too difficult to understand.

The high resolution allows tight cropping, giving the equivalent of using a telephoto lens , or effectively increasing the focal length of the lens in use by a factor of 2 or 3.
I especially like the larger lcd screen and the use of the joystick for examining zoomed images on the screen.
The only downside I have found is that there are so many features I must carry the user manual "just in case".

Having spent 15 years shotting slide film...and the last 5 years with the 10D and 20D it's great to be shooting with a full size sensor again. Image quality is outstanding with the 12.8 megs and the controls are just where you would expect them to be. The only thing I could ask for would be a few more fps shooting speed.

I have a 20D as well and I like the added megapixels (4.8 more) and the 1.0 sensor for those wide angle shots. The body is very rugged which is good for nature and wildlife work. The colors are very nice too.
The price is a little high if you compare it to some of the other nice DSLRs on the market, like the Rebel XTI and the Nikon D80, but I'm happy with mine.

A great product, from the outside to the inside. I love the though construction and the looks and of course the fact that you have a full size sensor which lets you use your lens without adding focal distance. It may be great if it had a flash, but wouldn't change it ig this meant making a smaller pentaprism.

While my Rebel XT is so good that it has drawn me back to photography, the 5D is significantly better. Yes, it's a bit on the hefty side, but its capabilities far outweigh the increase in size and weight. I would like the option for taking the occasional shot with a flash without the need to mount one, however this lack seems to be driven by design and is not a serious limitation. Menu features are excellent and intuitive, and the camera has a solid feel.

The camera is great, but of course it still requires expensive lenses to obtain quality photos. I miss the built-in flash (like the Canon 20D has) for times when shooting casual snapshots.

This is one of the best cameras around right now. The pictures are superb in both resolution and color. However, you really need to take the time to understand the controls to get the most out of it.

This camera produces some incredible results. Shooting RAW you get excellent control over your images and even the JPEGS are great. Overall a great camera for anyone who needs or wants a full-frame DSLR.

I love my 5D. Previous to this I've owned several Canon film cameras, the original digital Rebel, and the 10D. But, even on a 4x6 proof, the difference between the 5D and the 10D are obvious.

What I love most about the 5D is the full-frame (35mm) sized sensor. No more lens conversion factor. My 28mm is now a 28mm. My 15mm is now a 15mm. I simply think this is the best camera available for the price.

This is the finest camera I've ever owned or used. I use it with the grip attached because I have big hands. High ISO noise is extraordinarily low. I only wish mirror lockup were not so hard to do.

This camera is great! I have been shooting with it since January and it has never ceased to amaze me how spectacular of a camera it is for the price. It does me well for portraits, weddings and event photojournalism. This is not a beginner's camera though, as you will find the controls and settings to be a little tricky if you do not know what you are doing. Overall, though, this camera is amazing!

I have the camera a couple of weeks now and shot a lot of pictures with it. This camera with a couple of "L" lenses can't be beat. The color & sharpness quality is great. The controls are easy to use and understand. And most of all it is a full frame camera (35mm). Even at 800 ISO is has very little noise. The only drawback I find is the price and you have to take care to keep the sensor clean. I also have the 350D and it has the same problem, you have to keep the sensor clean, which is normal with digital camera's. I have had a few camera's in my lifetime, however, I find the 5D just awesome. I found the 350D a teriffic camera when I first purchased it, however, the 5D will just blow it away. In my estimation Canon certainly has a winner with this camera.
