Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

Having had several previous generation digital EOS bodies, the 7D IS a quantum leap above ALL the others, save the 1D or 1Ds series. In fact, it almost has MORE functionality than one would ever hope to utilize. Although I've only had it for a short while, I'm amazed at the raw processing power & photo power that this model possesses. There's VERY little NOT to like about it, except maybe the shutter is a bit louder than other EOS bodies I've owned or do presently own.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I love my 40d but upgraded to the 7d for its ability to use higher ISOs, and I'm glad that I did. Having the ability to use higher ISOs has allowed me to use my slower (but cheaper and lighter) 24-105mm f4 and 70-200 f4 lenses in lighting that would have required faster, heavier and more expensive f2.8 lenses. Autofocusing is fast, accurate and reliable and the image quality at ISOs up to ISO1600 is outstanding - even images shot at ISO3200 are usable for prints up to 8x10.

I debated between the 7d and the 60d but opted for the 7d with its better weather sealing - something that was much appreciated in the rainforest.

I didn't buy the 7d for its video capacity and have only used that feature a few times but I was impressed with it and can see why some people are buying the 7d and 60d just for this feature. One drawback to the video is that autofocus doesn't work while in video mode.

Whether shooting landscapes, sports or wildlife, the 7d has not disappointed me.

Love it.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I frequently photograph animals and flying birds with my 70-400 IS Sigma lens. My Canon Rebel XT produced a high percentage of blured or out of focus shots. My Canon 40d did much better. I live near a animal/bird sanctuary and have made a number of trips there with my new 7d and have not yet had a blured or out of focus shot (hundreds of shots).

This camera is well worth the investment.

We even took one to DISNEY WORLD with us when we went with our family for Christmas just because of the video feature. This truly is a camera for EVERYONE and every shooter. Best Canon I have ever owned (and that's saying something considering this is my 11th camera!)

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I am a semi professional photographer with most of my work now in portraiture's, and still life. I had the EOS 1D Mark lll which I used exclusively for sports and action photography. With the emphasis on the aforementioned I did not hesitate to sell my Mark lll and jump on the 18 mgpxl 7D

I love the feel, the dials still have that professional feel like the Mark lll, stiff, precise and quick. I love the fact that the auto setting really does a great job setting up a shot, the look from behind the lens is full frame and I love the focal points.

I added the Canon Battery Grip which makes this camera feel exactly in my hands like the Mark lll and that big fat, heavy bold grip I love. I would recommend this to anyone who is serious or a hobbyist. This is a great camera for any ocassion

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

Let me start by saying that this is the first review that I have ever written for any product that I have purchased period. This camera is simply amazing to me and that's saying a lot because I have owned two rebels the 20D, 30D, 40D and 50D and while they were all great cameras the 7D is simply in another class completely. I won't go into all the details and specs on this camera because that would make for a very long review. The only thing that I would caution a new buyer on is that there is a learning curve to correctly use this camera. Even though I have several years of experience using Canon SLR cameras I had to actually take the time to learn to use the 7D correctly an example of this is the new improved focusing system. Because it and other features are so advanced you have to take the time to learn to use them correctly. If it's in your budget get you won't be sorry.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

[...]The 7D feels great in your hands, and it doesn't take long to realize that this is a solid workhorse of a camera. I haven't fully tested it, and there's a lot to know before I squeeze out all of its potential. First impression: for wildlife, sports and general use, it's plain fantastic.I've only shot a few videos, but the quality is beyond my expectations. I recently saw the 7D in use on a major travel TV program, so I guess I'm not alone in my assessment. Don't forget to buy a good external stereo mic, like the Rode X/Y, and some big, fast, memory cards. I really look forward to adding commercial video to my capabilities --it's a must-have anymore. The 7D's focus is really fast and accurate; I've used the microfocus adjustment to tune-in my lenses too. Great feature. I can't tell you what an advantage 8 FPS gives you, until you see it for yourself ...awesome! Being able to catch a bird's wing in 'just' the right position allows me to somewhat forgive the high-ISO shortfalls. Great color, contrast and saturation. At low ISOs (up to 1600), this camera definitely out-resolves the Nikon competition; remember, the gap between 18Mp and 12Mp is HUGE, and gives you lots of editing room. Most of the noise is chromatic, but the luminance noise increases exponentially with the ISO speed. Still, I've purposely jacked up the ISO to take some interesting BW looks; the noise is very film-like.I think some people have been excessively harsh on the 7D's images. Make no mistake; this camera can make fine photographs. That said, I do huge enlargements of my landscapes and I look forward to the next-gen 5D to supplement my 7D's awesome wildlife work. You'll love the feature set of this camera too; it has all the adjustments a serious photographer needs. The quick menu is very handy. The dust cleaning is better than ever, and not a spot so far, despite changing lenses in the desert wind (not recommended!)I've included a couple of photos that I shot from extreme usable distance at ISO 4000, using an EF 100-400mm f4.5/5.6L, 400mm, 1/320 sec., f/5.6, with the camera's standard automatic High ISO NR. Are they Sports Illustrated (pixel) quality? ...No, but unusable? Hardly. I'm wondering what similar shots will look like when I've better mastered the 7D feature set, and work around its quirks a little better. If you're looking to buy a reasonably priced camera, with professional-level features and capabilities, the 7D has to top your list. For general-purpose work with a sports and/or wildlife focus, don't hesitate to get this camera, you'll love it 95% of the time, and work-around the rest. Huge prints and landscapes? Maybe wait for the 5D Mk III.Better noise control=5 Stars.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

Anyone who says the noise level on this camera is great at high ISO, either doesn't have this camera, they are trying to sell this camera, is lieing, or has no idea what low noise is. That being said... I give it a 4 star because, they would have done better to leave off the video capability and make it a full frame for the same price. Would have MUCH better noise levels at high ISO. Do that, and I'll change my rating to a 5 star.

It IS a great camera for a 1.6 crop sensor. I shoot weddings and portraits. This was meant to be a backup camera, but I do find myself shooting with it more than others. Mostly for the very good AF, which is way better than it's predecessors, and by far, better than the 5D2. IQ is good, color reproduction is excellent on outdoor shots without any change in in camera saturation. Indoors, a slight bump up in sat or vibrance in PS is all that's needed.

8fps is excellent, but change it to non-H if you're shooting portraits, it can easily run away with you and outshoot your flash/strobes.

ISO noise: Hmmmmm. Ok, to be honest? This camera is best used in very good light. ISO 100/200 both actually show noise in dark areas of the frame, even at shutter speeds in the upwards of 1/1000's. ISO 400 begins noticeable noise levels in most conditions, but easily controllable in software. 800 and up begins loss of detail due to noise reduction, but manageable at prints of up into the 16x24. 1200 ISO and I probably wouldn't go beyond 8x10. Same for 3200, but questionable use, unless the light was actually still pretty high. 6400 and 12,600 (H mode) are virtually useless. I wouldn't print 4x6's with it. I saw one review on here that was talking about shooting weddings at 12,600 with this camera. NOT! Or you won't be in business as a wedding photographer for very long.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

The 7D is much better than my XTI. I almost bought the 60D. However, when I saw the 60D specs, I paid a little more for what I think is a much better camera. I think the swivel screen on the 60D is just one more thing to break.

I bought two 7D's for a trip to Yellowstone. The pictures didn't disappoint.

I like the solid construction and fast shooting.

I wish AEB was extended to more than 3 shots. I became accustomed to using the Q button to shift the exposure quickly. But, this is kludgey. If I didn't have lots of lenses, I would have seriously considered a Nikon for HDR. This is just firmware! How about an upgrade to match or beat Nikon.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I have been using this camera for nine months. I was scared when I first ordered it because of the reviews about focus issues. Never a problem. I agree with those who suggest that the focus issue is from lack of reading the instructions.

I have used this in harsh climates and bad weather. Love the long battery life. Great for taking pictures of wildlife in rapid fire mode.

Terrific camera love it.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I have read quite a bit about how semi-pros and pros rate the 7D, some of the reviews are right on the money, some tell me they haven't taken the time to read the manual, the camera takes some time to learn even if you're a Canon shooter, anyway is all about how you understand the camera and how you make it work for you.

In my personal experience is a great camera, I bought it right after it came out and up to this point I've upgraded it with every firmware that has come out for it.

The improvement in the AF system of this camera over the 50D (which I also have) is awesome, color reciprocity is fantastic, sharp, crispy high quality images (bring the sharpness to 6) at least 'till 3200 ISO, the body feels robust, the battery grip is superb, I've gone so far to enlarge 20x24s for brides photos, the skin tone and the dress detail are fantastic, I know I can have 40x60s printed from shoots with the 7D and the result's will be breath taking, I can go and on about the 7D, now "you must spend the money in L series glass and with fixed lens remember that you have two feet, shoot like a pro and you will see what this camera will give you".

Oh yes I recommend it to a friend.

I used this camera to replace my T1i. This camera blows the doors off that one. Image quality is so much sharper, the Servo focus can be used with zones and tracking is SO MUCH EASIER. I have taken shots at 1600 and even 3200 ISO that look better than 400 ISO on the T1i.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I've owned the 7D now for 6 months, having upgraded from a 30D. The images produced now appear to be limited by the quality of the optics and not the technology of the camera. To see what I mean, look at the two photographs attached to this reveiw.

The first was taken with a 70-200mm f2.8 L Series lens. The photo was not cropped. This inset is a circle 500 pixels in diameter. Notice that the black spot in the original photo is in reality an ant.

The second photo is a 1800 x 1200 pixel marquee cropped from the full sized image. It was taken with a 17-85mm zoom in macro mode.

Judge for yourself the benefits of a 18 megapixel sensor. If you buy this camera and fit it with professional optics you will be amazed by the results.

One warning, this is a complex camera. You need to study the camera's manual. If you do not take time to study how to control this camera, it will control you and you will not necessarily like the results.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I spent a long time deciding on whether to go with the 7D or the 5D mkII. I am primarily a landscape photographer, but the allure of the 8FPS, AF, and lower price of the 7D won me over. It is also nice to know I have the FPS and AF to shoot other things if the opportunity strikes.

One important note. I shoot a lot of HDR. One issue when doing this is movement in between the different exposures causing ghosting. The high FPS on this body is greatly helpful to avoid this when shooting in normal lighting conditions. I hold down the shutter and it pops off three exposure in the time my old camera would shoot one. If only Canon would provide a firmware update to allow 5 and 7 bracketed shots...DID YOU HEAR ME CANON?!

I've been using this camera to shoot red carpet and event photography. The 1.6x chip is a bit tough to get used to but the quality is insane. Not the greatest on iso over 1200 but still a good file. The shutter button is tricky,.. it doesn't go half way easily without firing the camera.
All in all I'm pleased with the body.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I have had this camera for about three weeks now.

IMO this is NOT a camera to pick up and start shooting winners right away.

Reading the manual, twice, and maybe getting another of the very instructional books that are available, is my very strong advice.

The amount of settings and shooting modes etc. can be overwhelming without some guidance from the manuals, or tutorials available on the net.

I still have not mastered the camera, but I must say, that the images are nothing but outstanding when I set it correctly. And I am having a blast learning.

I guess the bottom line is, if you are looking for a DSLR that you can just set in Auto, and get keeper shots consistently, this is not the camera body for you.

If on the other hand you are willing to take the time to learn all of great features of this camera, it is a no brainer. BUY IT. You will not be disappointed.

The 7D offers the possibility of a great image when matched with quality glass and adequate user skill. What more should we expect from a high level photographic tool?
Relative to other 2009/2010 models presently in production the 7D stands equal or better.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

Being a digital virgin of the SLR type I waited until I found a review of a camera that met my needs and then some.

That said this camera meets and exceeds my needs but not my slow learning curve (not the cameras fault).

99% of the photos I have shot are clear and concise after I refer to the manual to find out what and why the results I first got were not what I expected.

I have had Canon's "G" series cameras for some years now and yearned to reenter the SLR field for their interchangeable lenses and other features usually not found with point and shoot cameras.

This camera is a far cry from my old 35mm gear and my last "G-11" Canon point and shoot was wonderful and I will not give it up but with 18 megapixals one can not help but achieve those elusive and impressive wall photos.

So far I am still learning this camera and a day has not gone by without using it outside to reenforce my particular learning curve.

I'd recommend this camera to any friend, passerby, stranger who wants a fine digital SLR.

My only concern is the noise of the camera and wildlife photography but I'll adapt and overcome, perhaps there's a suppresser for this somewhere on line, smile.

I'm moving up from a Canon 20D and this thing is the bee's knees. It fast and controls multiple flashes so its possible to get a feel for pro-style portraits. The video thing is cool but the lack of auto focus while videoing will make me grab my video camera most days.It appears to be built like a tank but time will tell. I;m only about 600 pictures in and am amazed at the quality and the amount of drive space these rascals take up.

I had a choice between this and a $3,500 AVCHD video camera. Why waste your money on AVCHD when you can get H.264 with this camera that's less than half the cost? It's a great video camera except for the fact that there's no auto focus when shooting video - but it works great for still photos.

I'd like to seem them make a camera with a video editing software friendly format like Apple Pro Res 422 HQ for Apple's Final Cut OR! I'd like to see Apple make Final Cut be able to handle this camera's H.264 like it does it's Apple Pro Res.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I got this camera as an upgrade to my reliable but aging Canon Rebel XT. I guess that at this point, anything would have been a major upgrade for me, but I couldn't be happier with the 7D. In the month that I've had it, I've shot a concert, a family portrait session, and a week's worth of travel photography in Paris, and I have no complaints. Also, full HD video looks absolutely stunning.

Low-light performance (eg. at a concert, or in a church) was rock solid up to ISO 3200. There is a plethora of options for the new autofocus system. And the high-speed burst mode is great for capturing fast action.

On the (very) nit-picky side, the RAW+JPG settings took me a little bit to figure out, and I wish I could set bracketing of more than 3 shots at a time, as is possible on some Nikon models. Also, I wish auto-focusing in Live View was faster. And, if you are traveling with this camera, be prepared, because it does get a bit heavy after a while.

I have even used some of my 1970s era Nikon lenses with it (in manual focus mode) via an inexpensive adapter ring! This is the DSLR with the features I've been waiting for.

I got this as my back up to my 5D mkII....but now I use them both so I don't have to switch out lenses in the field. 7D quality is great, 5D is killer. Two cameras I don't think I'll replace for a while.

Must get L glass, or comparable "top" glass...don't sell the capability of the cams short with mediocre glass.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I spent several months researching DSLRs in all price ranges. The D7 met all my criteria and, with the exception of not being a full frame, matched many features on the highest end cameras but with a significantly lower price tag. The D7 has measured up to all the claims I read and heard. Learning features was easier than I thought, but realistically it took me about a week to digest all of the material in the 200+ page owner's manual.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

This camera is a great product for those who are looking for a cost-effective tool for small to moderate video productions. I use this camera to shoot webisodes, music videos, and other web based videos. It definitely has a learning curve to use for video due to it's uniqueness in terms of usability and control, but the depth-of-field and low-light abilities of this camera make it perfect to achieve cinematic results.

The pluses:

+Great low-light performance, I've even shot certain videos at ISO 3200 that were intended for the web, that still hold up great!
+Depth of Field and sensor size unheard of on any video camera in this price range
+Huge compatibility with different lenses (using adapters)
+Small form factor make it discreet, easy to travel, and simple

If I had any complaints (in terms of video use), it's the rolling shutter problem when using fast pans and the tendency to introduce lots of shake into the image. Make sure to use IS lenses, a tripod or other stabilizer, and avoid doing fast pans, and you will find that the images you can create with this camera can be fantastic, and comes in a much smaller and efficient form factor than, say, an HVX with a 35mm adapter. Great product, definitely a rising camera in the business!

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I purchased the 7D as a compliment to a 5DMII. I needed something that had a high frame rate and quick AF for sports. The 7D does not disappoint. The new AF system is quick and can be set up to track focus points. Keeping moving objects in focus is easy to do and reliable even at 8fps. For portrait or landscape shooting it cannot compare to the IQ of the 5DMII, but if you need something, like I did, for action this is it.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

The 7D is a new model into the canon digital line...placing itself somewhere between the xxD line and the 5Dmk2...

While the 7D excels at HD video recording and high frame rate still capture, it does have a few lacking qualities.

I won't go into great detail about its pro's... there are plenty of reviews and discussions of where it is great.

I will go into detail about where it is lacking...

first off in 100% crop when comparing the quality of images from this camera to say the 5Dmk2 you will likely be swinging toward the 5D... this is for a few reasons though... 5D is more expensive, and full frame.

If absolute image quality, sharpness, color rendition, etc is the most important to you, go with the 5D... if you will be happy with very excellent results and a camera with an autofocus sensor that is very fast and accurate, the 7d IS THE CHOICE.

I can see the 7D being chosen by those who shoot action/sports and need a proven auto focus system...

the newly added electronic viewfinder is also a nice touch, very clear, bright, and full of information.

Overall a great camera for those who can utilize its strengths.

No it is not the best studio camera out there... will it give you fantastic results if used properly in the studio? yes.

bottom line this is a great new product from canon and hopefully the start of a great new line...

definitely worth the 'entrance' fee...

My take is the lense and not the camera.

This is a great unit, and typical of Cannon quality. I use this mostly outdoors for scenery and Wildlife photos. I'll give it a solid five stars, but add the following: The built in flash has no place on a Camera in this price range. The extra space could have provided room for other features. I've also had to spend more time with the Manual compared with other Canon units that I own.

Customized controls, better metering, more autofocus options, higher ISO, what's not to like?

I've been using the 7D for 3 weeks and love it. The only issue I'm having is getting used to the video capabilities. From what I can tell, autofocus during video shooting is not possible.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

This is a great overall camera. It has a very deep menu and there're more features in this baby than you can shake a stick at. That's a wonderful thing if you know what you're doing and a detriment if you don't.

The image quality is fantastic at ISO's below 1600. Above 1600 and you'll have to do quite a bit of Photoshop work to smooth out the noise levels if you want to blow up the image (and I wouldn't do any cropping above this level), but I think this applies to just about any camera you get.

My only real gripe about this camera so far is the wireless off-camera feature. I thought it used radio transmission to trigger the off-camera Speedlites instead of a flash-dependent infrared technology. The pop up flash is a bit annoying as well. I didn't want to do this, but I suppose I'll have to buy those Pocket Wizards now...

All in all though, you can't beat the quality of this camera for the price. Are there better cameras than this in the Canon line? Sure, but they're thousands of dollars more, and I personally don't think those added features are worth the expense.

I mainly shoot family portraits and weddings and find this camera perform great under the circumstances. I have no problems shooting at ISO 6400 or even going up to 12800 and still be able to get a nice quality image. I'm still exploring the video capabilities and so far I can tell that it can get tricky to try and shoot a video in low light, you most definately need to be using a manual focus for that. The controls on the camera are totally customizable which is great. I don't mind that it's a crop camera, I have my favourite Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS to pair it up with and I get amazing results from this combo.

I use the 7D for indoor and outdoor sports and candid portraits. Although I like macro work, I haven't really put the 7D to the test. The fast fps, the AF system, and the great ISO range make this a great camera. I love that it has a pop-up flash that can act as a master of off-camera slaves. I've used the video for high school basketball and out door hike. The image quality is better than average.

It's important for the user to get to know the AF system as choosing the right setting is important. I do wish it was a full framed sensor, but otherwise this camera is a great multipurpose body.

I've shot over 3,000 pictures with this camera, and continue to learn more about it and enjoy it more every day.

There are only two feature that I wish they'd included:

- From the Rebel line: the little sensor on the back that prevented the camera from showing you a review on the LCD. On the Rebel, when you'd take a shot through the viewfinder, it would wait until your face was away from the LCD before previewing the shot. On the 7D, it just shows you a preview, which is fairly blinding with your eye right there, particularly if you wear glasses.
- It seems that controlling the ASA / exposure settings is impossible when shooting using the LCD. It could be that I'm just missing it, but I've read the manual through several times and can't manage to get it to use anything but automatic settings, when using the LCD.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

Packed with many great features in addition to the HD video. Have used the camera for 3 weeks and am amazed by the ease of use. Big improvement over the Canon 30D regarding access & use of the menu driven camera features. Canon also providing online video tutorials which helps in learning the camera better. Built very well. I like the automatic sensor cleaner when you turn the camera on & off.

Haven't found anything I don't like yet.

I was only buying a camera to take photos but the video capabilities have blown me a away. Slap a decent prime on it with a large aperture and you'll get amazing HD video in low light and shallow DoP you would expect to see on a dedicated video camera 5 times the price.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I've been a 30D user since the summer of 2004 and saw no reason to upgrade to the 40D or 50D. With a 225% increase in pixel count and a claimed substantial decrease in noise at high ISO, I took a leap of faith and bought the 7D. I've only shot 1000 or so images, but this camera is what it is advertised to be; namely a quantum leap forward in imaging technology.

If you shoot only RAW images as I do, expect your computer to appear to slow down. There is so much data with each photo that it takes some time for it to be processed.

If you buy this camera, you should invest in a UDMA compatable CF Card that has at least an 8GB capacity. Anything less will frustrate you with its limited capacity for storage and speed.

I took the attached photograph of a full moon with a 70-200mm L Series with the focal length set to 200mm. To produce the attached image, I cropped a 1200 by 800 pixel section from the photograph. The result is a photograph that has 94% of the original cropped away. The result is a fairly detailed photo of the surface of the Moon. I could never dream of getting these results with my 30D. Believe me I have tried.

Even if you have to eat beans and franks for a year to afford this camera, it is worth the money.

I'm old school medium/large format film-type guy and this is the "smallest" of my collection. Digital photography isn't new to me though. While working for an Ad company, I've captured pics for 60" exhibits using higher resolution DSLRs and 56x36mm digital backs on Hassy's and Mamiya's where, imho, a film format would have been appropriate. Quality and details were irrelevant. It was about getting the job done quickly. Now with this 7D, I wanted to do same thing. Crazy! but I tried it anyway just for the heck of it, already biased knowing it's no match. Surprisingly, at [$] price tag, the quality is really NOT that far off. Looks like Canon did a good job on noise reduction technology of its latest chip. I'm happy and probably won't go any higher (will use film for those stuff that demands details and precision). EOS7D, to me, is built right and priced just right. Actually it's a steal, considering the extras not available to its higher-end siblings and other brands, like a built-in flash that can trigger remote slaves wirelessly, an 8fps shooting ala EOS1D, and a widescreen h264 compressed 30-min video capabilty.Though not a video fan (until now), found it as a nice feature for making short footages of my work (that's one less gear to lug) and 1080p/HDMI feature makes viewing of videos less painful on newer TV's.Bottom line, it's manageable in size/weight, full-auto feature which makes a good family/vacation point-n-shoot camera, a nice add-on to a pro without breaking the bank, and a sexier all-black body that guarantees to make you look like a Pro without breaking your neck!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------EOS-7D/Tamron 18-270mm VC2 lens/SanDisk 16GB ExtremeProCF90/Kata DH-425 Holster/SpeedLite 580EX2

The best thing about this camera is that I can take it from a wedding to a sporting even to a portrait shoot and only have to change the lenses. I would have to say that the low light capabilities and fast shutter speed are the highlights for me.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

This camera looks great on paper, but.... The good news: the 7D packs lots of pro features you'll love, like a big and bright viewfinder and LCD screen, weather seals, a dampened mirror that doesn't startle wildlife, minimal shutter lag and fast AF. I bought my 7D with the incomparable Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS and the combined responsiveness is amazing. The bad news: it constantly over exposes and blows highlights outdoors in bright light, the auto white balance can't handle artificial light sources, the 18MP sensor delivers only about 10% more resolution than the 12MP sensors of my Nikon D90 & D700, mirror-lockup is buried in a custom menu folder, the IR remote shutter release can only be used with a delay, the tiny buttons around the shutter release button are difficult to operate quickly, the toggle control is temperamental, it is not possible to set a ceiling when using auto ISO, if Highlight Tone Priority is used to protect highlights you can't shoot below ISO 200 and some of the menu controls are needlessly complicated. The 7D has so many image quality issues that shooting in RAW is a must. In order to produce usable results in direct sun, I have settled on -2/3rds EV as a standard setting, Highlight Tone Priority enabled, and contrast no higher than the default 0 point. Whenever possible I stop down and always use a super multi-coated polarizer on the lens. Editing outdoor shots almost always involves a strong levels adjustment to reclaim highlight detail. Is the 7D worth the price tag and considerable heft? Yes, if you need the rich feature set, shooting speed and durable build, and want to be able to use some outstanding Canon lenses on a small, APS-C sensor dSLR. No, if your #1 goal is to boost resolution and IQ beyond a Canon T1i or Nikon D90. If Canon issues firmware updates that correct the exposure/highlight and WB problems, I would recommend this camera to a friend. Attached, an example of an outdoor shot taken with the suggested settings. [...]

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

Been using a Canon XTi for the last two years, and EF / EOS film cams for 20yrs before then. I find the 7D to be so good, I can't use the XTi anymore, and will probably sell it. XTi has served me well and provides great images, but pales in comparison to 7D.

Indoors, low light, no flash, XTi struggles with White Balance and exposure. 7D is spot on thanks to Auto ISO 3200. I now can Kelvin adjust for indoor lighting better than the presets and easier than the custom WB. For high shutter speed needs, ISO can be pushed further with very good results. I'll bet the new metering system or the dual DIGIC processing is responsible for the improvements.

For sports shots outdoors, the XTi @ 3.5FPS sounds like slow motion compared to the 7D's 8FPS. New focusing options are wonderful and locks on every time almost instantly.

Body is hefty but more comfortable than the XTi. I no longer have to wrap my pinky underneath the hand grip. Magnesium alloy and faux leather texture on the 7D against the plastic of the XTi is the difference between professional build and consummer model. I hear the durability for 7D is >150,000 clicks so this could be the last camera I ever need (unless I get a full-frame).

The bigger, clearer LCD makes image review a pleasure. Pictures from all my lenses - even the 17-85 - look like they were taken by "L's" now (and I have a 135mm 2.0L to compare against). View finder is bigger and brighter compared to the XTi. 7D also has Live View which will come in handy (with the electronic leveler) for Macro / Landscape tripod shots. I don't plan to use Movie Mode at all.

Outdoors in good light, I marvel at how good this DSLR makes my pictures look. Clear and contrasty with great color and dynamic range. The Lighting Optimizer feature is subtle, but does improve shadow areas when highlights predominate. Don't really need the HTP (but if you shoot a lot of weddings, you might). Add what looks like an improved 18mp sensor, and dynamic range and resolution is stellar.

I like that there is a pop-up flash for fill-ins if needed, and if I had a studio, the Master / Slave controller feature would be a bonus.

I will say that I prefer the shutter sound on the XTi to the 7D. Although softer, the 7D sounds muffled and lacks the authoritative "snap" I'm used to. The return mirror is probably bumpered for reliability, but the "thunk" you hear is really different. Nothing that I won't get used to.

I use the Av or Tv modes most, but will probably cusomize C1,2,3 as I gain experience. There are no Scene modes to be lazy about, but Full Auto is still there for shots of desparation.

I'm also impressed with the spot metering, HDMI connections, and custom lens adjustments. I did consider the 40D, and 50D (and even the XSi and T1i) models when they were released, but the 7D represents such a quantum improvement that I could'nt resist.

Very very pleased (!)

My main interests are wildlife, macro and birding, especially hummingbirds.Canon has reset the bar on this one.Just as the stealth aircraft skipped several steps of evolution in fighter warfare so also did Canon on this very awesome camera. There is no competitor out there that can match the 7D for getting the most bang for your buck. With many new features led by its dual Digic IV processors this camera is an absolute joy to use.I l am in love with the 8 fps that this camera provides.I can catch some action shots that were almost impossible to catch before.THX Canon[...]Keep up the good work Canon and Adorama.

Comments about Canon Canon EOS-7D Digital SLR Camera Body, 18.Megapixels, with Advanced Movie Mode & 8 FPS Shooting:

I had a Rebel XT and then later a 30D that I've used for years. Very happy with the 30D, but this camera is an absolute WOW! I've been shooting with it now for 2 weeks and am constantly amazed with it. The low light performance is spot on. Love the viewfinder. I'm inspired to do photography once again!

I've played around with different settings and have been impressed with the auto ISO setting in the Program mode. Normally I set the ISO accordingly. I've never been happy with my previous camera's choice of ISO settings. But the 7D nails it everytime. I still prefer to set it myself, but it's nice to know that if I get a little lazy and don't want to figure out the settings, the camera will get it right everytime. Now the auto white balance still is less than perfect. It gets it right most of the time, but every once and a while the white balance is just a little off. One more thing, if you plan to shoot video much, be sure and get a high speed CF card.

This camera is worth every penny and will not disappoint! I am extremely happy with it.
