I use this camera to take pictures of anything of interest. I particularly like to play with natural lighting for both day and night outdoor photography. The camera is great for still subjects. However, if you need to take multiple pictures in quick succession, this camera lags too much for that. Other than that, I love the camera. I keep it with me wherever I go, just in case, I encounter something I want to photograph.

I purchased this camera for my husbands birthday, about a month in advance. This is the first digital camera that we've ever owned or used. It's a learning experience and for us, it's taking a little time to adapt to. However, we're both impressed and excited about the wonderful quality off the pictures we've taken so far. I purchased this because of the reviews from several sources. I didn't want to spend alot, but the way that I've read this camera measures up to others that cost more, I'm confident that I've made the right choice.

This is my first digital camera after 40 years of film shooting. I wanted a DSLR but can't yet afford one. So, rather than spending a lot of money on a more advanced point-and-shoot, I decided to start with a cheap one and get a DSLR later. After a lot of research, I decided on the A590 IS. For the price, it seemed to offer many features only found on more expensive models. I have been shooting with it now for only a few months but I am amazed at what this camera is capable of. First, as a film shooter, I wanted a camera with a real viewfinder as well as the LCD. This one has it. Second, I wanted a camera that allows real control. This one has it - full program, aperture priority, shutter priority, full manual, and a bunch of other exposure modes. I also wanted a pocketable camera. This isn't the smallest available but easily fits in a coat pocket. Overall, I couldn't be happier. The image stabilization system really works. I am taking sharp handheld shots at fairly slow shutter speeds that I could never get with my old film cameras. Images are really good and I can print 11" x 14" at the highest resolution and lowest compression settings. When I feel like being lazy, I can point-and-shoot. When I want more control, it's there. It even has flash exposure compensation on top of regular exposure compensation. My high-end film SLR doesnt' have flash compensation!

My complaints are few and shouldn't count much given the low price. The batteries are AA rather than a lithium-ion pack and if you want to use rechargeables, you have to buy the charger and batteries separately. This will cost more in the long run and they don't last as long as the better lithium packs. There is no AC adapter included so you will need to buy one to use while downloading photos or get a card reader to connect to your computer. My camera came with a dead date/time battery so I had to replace it. Canon makes a bunch of cool accessories for this camera that would make an awesome package - a wide angle lens adapter, a telephoto lens adapter, a close-up lens adapter and even an auxiliary flash unit. The only problem is that they all cost too much. Each accessory costs nearly as much or more than the camera. Why bother when no one in their right mind is going to spend that kind of money to accessorize a camera in this price range? My final quibble is that the tripod socket is off center which is annoying but not a deal breaker.

This camera is fantastic for the price.It's a little noisy but I can't hear anyway so I at least know it's working.The through the lens viewfinder is an excellent addition especially in bright sunlight.Most LCD screens can't be seen on the beach.With the TTL bright lights are no problem focasing on subject.

The 32 MB card that came with the camera was too small. I purchased a 4GB SDHC card and, though the lag time has increased, I now have a large enough card for my photographic/video needs. The camera is compact and sturdy, easy to use for those of us with debatable photographic skills, and it takes great pictures. I am very pleased.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He was a camera-phobe, afraid to use my camera but needing to document things for his work, as well as for play. The display tells what mode you are in. I have an A95 and it does not have this feature. Instead I used to have to get the instruction manual to know what the different symbols stood for. That this function pops into the screen is nice. I was also worried because my old camera had 4 batteries and this only has two, but we have not had to change them often, even after taking several small movies. It makes the camera lighter too. The display is much bigger than the A95, although it does not have that swivel feature that I am now addicted to. Great photos so far, and ability for a new user to start with "auto" mode, then learn the features and functions as we go make this a good camera we will use for a long time. Plus we got it at a great price.

Excellent for use in daylight with very little lag time. Night shots where flash is required will cause some recovery time, but not more than other digital cameras I have used. This camera uses two AA batteries which is convenient. Rechargable batteries are best for this camera and will last much longer than alkaline. Picture quality is excellent. Video quality is surprisingly good and I have written many DVDs from the video taken from this camera. You have many settings to tweak your pictures, but if you don't have time to study the manual, the auto setting does a very good job. Having a viewfinder as well as a good sized lcd display helps tremendously in sunlight. This is not my first Canon "A" series camera, and I am very happy with it.

Great value for a beginner camera, actually better than most looked at. Nice to have a view finder because went from a film camera to a digital for the first time. It does have a great LCD also. Construction much better than most. We ordered another one that we sent back because it was made poorly. Love this camera.

The camera shoots a quality picture. It is also compact, reasonably priced and easy to use. My only gripe is the noticable shutter release lag (even on burst mode) which means that kid and pet shots usually need to be retaken.

I use this product in normal everyday friend settings. Usually the lighting is just so so but the pictures turn out really well. I take a lot of action shots and this product does a great job of catching clear ones. Sometimes the lag time can be kind of slow but that's not really that important to me.

Getting the 590 up was easy and I used my own 2g memory card. The first couple of pics were not good. I think I forced the shot, not allowing for the beep to press the shutter.
Finally I have a camera that I need to consider compressing the jpegs before emailing!
I does have a *lot* of options, but I have not had much trouble using options.

I wanted a small convienent p eboint and shoot camera for all around use, something easy to handle and fast to set up for[...] photo's as well as for tossing in my 4x4 to take shots in the wilderness without the worry of damaging my expensive equipment but still able to give me quality pictures. I first purchased a Nikon Cool Pix L10 and was very disapointed with the size, weak LCD in sunlight,lack of viewfinder, slippery handling and flash photo's being overexposed. I sold it on[...] and purchased this Cannon, problem solved! Great little camera, weather you just want a point and shoot or use the many photo options it has to offer. I really like the shape and the positive grip you can achieve and still have perfect control of all the features also it provides a ton of information in the viewfinder. Great camera at a great price! You will not be disappointed with this Gem! For the price this is a great camera. The LCD doesn't have as nice a resolution, but that doesn't take away from the actual picture it makes.

The quality of the pictures to me is the most important and this camera takes great pictures.

I'm glad to have a camera around so that I can snap pictures whenever I want in just about any situation. Especially glad because of its low price.

I wanted a digital camera for around $100...I checked online for reviews and found this camera got great reviews. Even though it was a little bit more in cost, I think it's well worth it. [...] It's so easy to use (frankly I haven't even opened the manual yet). It takes great photos with no effort. And what I really love is that it takes great photos in the dark. I was at an event with very little light, and when I took pictures they came out just as well as if I was outside during the day. Great buy for the money, well worth it...and most importantly verrrry easy to use. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Overall great camera for price! Controls seem a little off, like the designer didn't want to go too far with the grip and ended up cutting it short a bit, not bad though. Used for everyday picture taking of family and friends. This camera definately has a better battery life than my last canon. Only thing that bothers me is that there is way to many controls on this camera that make it a little confusing.

My wife, who is intimidated by most things technical, took her early Christmas present on a winter trip to Europe with about an hour's total familiarization. She'd been dubious as we shopped; in the website photo it looks bigger than it is, and she wanted a fairly compact camera. When she got it, she was delighted with its size and form. It's large enough for the controls to be convenient and easy to manipulate, but it's small enough that it is always handy to pack or carry.

She came back with very nice photos. She liked the A590 IS' effectiveness on cloudy landscapes and on indoor shots of marginally lit cathedrals. She liked the long life of the two AA batteries and the ample resolution. And she liked the extra oomph of the 4x optical zoom with the image stabilization.

So far (2 months, 1 trip, 1 drop) it seems rugged. Some cameras are eliminating the viewfinder; this has one to supplement the LCD; we like that. We wish it was possible to use a neck lanyard or a neck strap, but because of the (single) tiny attachment point, the wimpy wrist strap seems to be the only method of hands-off carrying besides her bag.

Over time maybe she'll learn to use more if its features. But she's gotten excellent results already. It's an affordable, compact and easy-to-master camera with great features and few shortcomings.

At the time of this writing, there are few mid-compact point-and-shoot cameras that can offer as much quality and features as this one.The performance for low-light, fast-action work of a DSLR will be missing; frame-to-frame flash lag is long; and it's one size above "pocket" cameras -- but you'll have to pay considerably more for such things. Out of the box, pictures are a little darker than I prefer, but this is not a problem because it can easily be adjusted.

I gave this Camera to my 12 year old daughter as a Christmas Gift and I was happy to see a glow on her face! This camera is really great for the price. I use it mostly for pictures of family and friends at the beach, while hiking, and around the house. There are lots of settings, many that I still haven't played with yet. At the same time it's still very easy to use. The pictures are great quality as you'd expect with canon. Only little thing that can sometimes get annoying is the lag time after taking a picture. Overall great product, very satisfied with this camera.

I enjoy taking family photos and sharing them with family and friends.In print and on line. I am able to zoom in on multi faces and all are clear. I like to be able to us it in dark and with flash and still show lights, like on a Christmas Tree. The one thing I did not like about it is it take longer to get the shot and ready for the next. Also has short battery life.

Great product with a fantastic variety of easy to use features. There are also automatic and easy photo modes for those who are more inexperienced with photography. Overall this is an excellent camera for the price, and Cannon's customer service has already proven to be very helpful to me regarding any concerns I had.

When compared to other cameras in this price range, I found this to be the best camera available. I have tried others, and most do not rival the picture quality and versatility of this Powershot A590. This is a definite buy!

This is a really nice camera at a low price. There are only two complaints: slow shutter speed, but no slower than my Canon Powershot SD110, and pictures that are very out of focus, something I never experienced with my previous digital camera. It's lightweight and fits in a purse or pocket but I wish it had come with a custom case like the last camera. It's easier to replace the batteries since it uses AA but they don't seem to last as long as the rechargables although, especially when traveling, it's nice to be able to ;pick up a new power source quickly. This camera is easy to operate and the screen makes it easy to see your photographs.

Great for the casual atmosphere. But absolutely horrible in trying to take action shots. The wait time between pushing the shutter button and the time the photo actually shoots is way TOO LONG. By then, your chance is over and gone. And the wait time before you can shoot another picture is just as long.

I use this camera mainly for family photos and for our travels, it's sturdy and easy to use. The video feature is great and the anti-shake is also great.
However, I find that the LCD display is not as sharp and can be a little grainy. The lag time is slow especially in dark rooms.

Takes good quality still shots & "snapshot" type pics... not so good for fast, repetative shots... but the video mode makes up for that. Short battery life, so invest in rechargeable setup. I'd buy another one!

I bought this camera for both of my daughters as it is similar to my A710, which I love. It can be as simple or complex as the user wants to make it. The image stabilization is wonderful!

Purchased this for my wife who was finding our Nikon D80 a bit too intimidating. This is just the right size and simple to use; yet, if you choose, you can do quite a bit of more advanced photography. While small the controls are simple to use.

I like the fact that it has so many things you can change on it but if you dont read the manual and you are a beginner (this is the first digital camera I have ever owned) you dont use all the features.The only major complaints is that the videos seem to come out a little darker and sometimes pixely and the lag time is a little annoying also bring batteries with you if you are going to use it for more than 20 pics because the batteries die frequently other that that I am happy with my purchase.

This was a welcome Christmas present for my wife. She wanted a better camera for family pictures. The 2 megapixel camera we were using doesn't compare. She and I are very impressed. It is easy to use, takes great pictures, and is just a great camera. The other great thing was the price. I would have expected paying a whole lot more than I did for a camera with all the features this one has.

I am trying to convert my Mom to Digital from her last 35mm Canon film camera. Not an easy sell (she is 69) and needed something really simple. This fits the bill perfectly. I taught her over the Thanksgiving weekend. Now if she was just as comfortable transferring pics to her computer.......I bought her a 4 gig card so she can snap away until her next lesson.

This was an upgrade from a Canon 490. Controls and menus are pretty much identical. Pictures are ver good quality (I always use the highest resolution and if need be I downsize with software at a later time. You can't go back and add pixels after the fact). Flash charging limits how quickly you can take pictures but with flash off you can click away pretty much as fast as it can auto focus. (Using a high Speed SD Card)

L-O-V-E- That ses it all. This is a great camara, picked out for me by a professional photographer! The price I paid can not be matched. My 10 year old took pictures at a Christening, they all came out just great. The parents could not believe that a child took them, that is how easy this camamra is to use.

I'd like to say that for the price, it's a nice camera. I needed a camera to take photo's of pieces for online auctions and this one sure fits the bill. If you are not worried that much about low light usage then this camera would be the right one for you.

I used this camera at work to support my quality control insepction reports with pictures. I like the optical viewfinder, specially when shooting under direct sunlight. It has many useful controls that nicely stretch the meaning of a point and shoot camera. You could leave it in auto mode, if you do not know much about photography or you can use the manual or program settings to get good pictures under not so normal conditions.
