Pro...I bought this camera for my oversea trip.big seller for me is the 4 x AA battery.this means I can pick up a set in store if I can not recharge my MIMH batterys. or not near plug-ins wall socket.A640 does take great pictures and video.Swivel LCD is GREAT!!! Quick start up totake your first picture.Remember to get extra SD cards because thatextra 10 MP images and video you will be fill them up very fast.Con...one thing I notice sometime when I get lensflair show up in my LCD. but the image in the card seems OK. Maybe is the LCD issue???[...]

This is a great cam. It does awesome macros in my underwater work and has plenty of adjustments even for a pro. My only nag is it sometimes is reluctant to focus in macro. However this can be worked around by simply focusing on a more distant object and then comming back to your macro subject or going to manual focus. It is a shame they have discontinued this model.

I selected this camera because of the availability of a reasonably priced underwater housing (from Canon). I wanted to stick with Canon as I have always taken great shots with my other SLR's. I did not however want the bulk and weight of an SLR underwater. This camera (and housing) have performed above my expectations, even in the low light and high backscatter underwater environment. For anyone who has never taken any underwater photos, fish move faster than anything I have ever taken pictures of, and this camera caught all of them in great detail, and exceptional color accuracy. I just can't say enough good things about this powerful point and shoot.

When buying a point and shoot camera a person needs to understand that it will have limitations. Some of them are, a tendency toward red eye, long lag times, etc. This is the nature of the beast and must be accepted by the user for maximum enjoyment of a point and shoot.
That being said, the Canon A640 is a joy to own. With it comes the ability to take low level and waist level shots, thus enabling many candids that would be much more difficult, or impossible, with other cameras. This is especially useful for photographing small children, pets, or any other subjects that are closer to ground level.
Considering the features, usefulness, and price I believe that it is a very worthwhile purchase.
