I bought this as a carry around camera when I couldn't take my Nikon D300. And, for a small compact camera, it more than meets my expectations. I won't hesitate to use it as a back up camera, as well.

I just love this camera. It is a compact pro camera which is easy to carry, You do not miss any event.... I took Pro pictures with this camera.
Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
I like what it offers for the money in picture quality. It reasonably fast for general photography.
The IS and zoom range are good for most uses.
The controls are bit cramped and confusing after being used to SLR cameras. But one gets used to them. Low light performance isn't anything to cheer for, but a lot can be saved with software noice removal.
There is nice amount of control over exposure so it makes worthy camera even for pros who want something that fits in to the pocket.

Love that I can use it easily as a "point and shoot" or can manually adjust
Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
Bought this G10 after wearing out an SX10. The G10 has the easiest controls thus far on a Canon unit. VERY easy to setup, use and adjust on the fly. Rugid construction and fits very well in a small camera case for ease of carrying. A take everywhere camera when I mtn. bike or hike. Very pleased with this camera thus far. Only draw back is zoom is a little slow but otherwise this gets a high mark.

Because of this I'm certain thet this camera will actually be replacing my slr for a lot of shooting adventures. Buy one and let the games begin.

Great step up from a simple P&S - knobs let you quickly change ISO, shooting mode, exposure compensation without having to mess around with menus. Great photos (like all Canon P&S cameras), rugged body, and fairly quick (for a P&S).
Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
It is a fantastic camera, where, even with IS, if you are a little bit steady, you can take pictures in very low light. I liked the camera feeling. It is not like a regular point-and-shoot camera. It is much more like a pro camera, without the weight... I am really enjoying it!!!

Comparison with Power shot S50.
Red eyes with full flash, reducing flash output makes background darker.
Raw files can not be open with PS4 Adobe Camera Raw. Online support told me to call to third party software- PS4.
Download of images takes long time through canon USB cable. I have Windows XP, 2GB ROM, and 3.2g speed.
Big parallax – hard to frame properly close objects.
Slow shooting

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
Really good quality camera that allows you to leave the heavy stuff at home and yet have the ability to take quality pictures. Allows you to create RAW mode files that provides the ability for flexible creative control after the shot. However, I think this camera is harder to learn than my Canon 5D. I think that is because so mauch flexibility is crammed into a few controls, it just takes awhile to remember how to do certain things. The instruction manual is quite a chore to read and absorb. But once you get over the hump, you will appreciate the flexibility in that little box.

I had been using both a Canon film SLR camera and a smaller digital point and shoot Camera for many years. The Canon G10 has replaced both. It is just slightly larger than the point and shoot, yet it has all the functions of my film SLR. Like the SLR, it's very well built and actually many of the SLR accessories (flash, remote, etc...) can be used with the G10. Picture quality is amazing even in low light. Colors are rich, pictures are sharp, noise is low. Pictures look extremely realistic with good depth. The LCD screen is large and bright. Battery life is much better than expected. Overall, I think this is a great camera.

I keep a camera in my bag all the time; I use images as a sort of diary or notebook. I am a fiber artist and want to record images for inspiration. The quality of the g10's photo's are superior to basic point and shoot cameras. I wanted something more. It feels good in your hand; you get the sense it is very sturdily built. This is my every day camera, supplementing by Canon 40D.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
Worked well over a two week trip to Europe. Easy to carry and operate on walking tours and hikes, does not get into the way. A very good quality LCD made review of the pictures to keep easy.
As our first digital camera, after years of using a film SLR, was easy to set up and start using immediately. The advance features will take a while to master.

The perfect companion for family gatherings, travel and all those unexpected special moments. Perfect for all those times you don't want to pull out the big gun but still want a well exposed, sharp photo of all those special moments you experience every day. I'd recommend this camera to anyone who wants a quality, easy to use digital camera. My G10 is always by my side.

I love this camera. I carry it with me wherever I go. I have both a Canon 20D and Elph and this is the perfect blend of both.
I especially love the size. Small enough to carry everywhere but big enough to feel substantial. Reminds me of a Leica CL.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
I have always wanted to get into photography. I finally decided to take the 1st step and purchase a nice camera - one that would be fairly easy to use (for a beginner enthusiast like myself) but would produce good results too. I sought the advice of a pro and explained that I wasn't ready to jump into the world of DSLR quite yet but wanted a point and shoot that would give me the option to have more control over my photos and would also produce great results, even if I simply used the auto features. My pro friend recommended the Canon Powershot G10. It fit within my budget requirements, so I thought it would be a good fit. Well, I couldn't be more pleased. This camera is incredible! It is very user-friendly and comes with a wonderful technical guide which makes it very easy to learn about all the many different functions and features the camera has to offer. But first and foremost, it takes amazing pictures. I am still very much a beginner, and I have already been able to produce some incredible results... and with very little effort. I love that you can shoot in Camera Raw mode, and there are so many other options if you want more control (i.e. Aperture Priority mode and Shutter Speed Priority mode). I could probably write the equivalent of a novel on all the reasons I love this camera. But rather than force you to sift through too many of my rambling words, I will simply narrow it down to this: the Canon Powershot G10 is an excellent choice because it's very easy to use and has a ton of excellent features that will allow you to capture some truly amazing photos. Do yourself a favor and buy one today. You won't be disappointed!

I used film SLR and range finder cameras for years and bought a Canon Elph several years ago. I just upgraded to the G10. Although it is not as small and portable as the Elph, it is a nice compromise between the larger SLR and the pocket size. I have been very happy with it so far.As always, Adorama's prices [...] can't be beat.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
Most reviews here are favourable and I wholeheartedly agree. My two disappointments are the optical viewfinder which is tiny, inaccurate, and consequently next to useless. I don’t always want to take pictures at arm’s length, even though the rear screen is first-class. Sometimes I want to shoot Leica style using the optical viewfinder. If you’re like me then, the G10, just like the preceding G7 and G9, in this area will disappoint.
Secondly, only Photoshop CS4 will open the G10s RAW files. Having paid a small fortune for CS3 – a wonderful piece of software what does all and more than I want it to – I REALLY don’t want to shell out again for the update. At the time of writing this in February 2009, the word on the web is that Adobe have no plans to release a plug-in for CS3 to recognise my lovely G10 RAW files. So be warned – budget as well to further line Adobe’s pockets.
One further problem to overcome...this camera does not easily lend itself to the use of filters. That extending lens and 28mm wide-angle make finding a workable filter system difficult. My solution is a Lensmate G10 58mm adapter and a 58mm extension tube. Together or singly they allow a Cokin filter holder to be used at all focal lengths.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
I have been a professional photographer for 30 years. In many situations a bulky pro camera draws attention, especially in countries suspecious of outsiders. The Cannon G 10 is the first really pro camera I have seen that looks like a tourist camera. I can use it in places where my Nikon F2 is too noticeable and still get outstanding results. It is the only camera I am taking to Vietnam this year without any fears, not of the people, but of malfunctions. It is extremely well made and so far has been totally reliable.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
I was looking for a camera that has great picture quality and is easily transportable...not bulky like the SLR's. After much research and hands-on I found the Canon G10 to be an excellent choice. The G10 is lightweight, but solid feeling, with user friendly dials and many features and modes for creative and fun shooting, including Macro. It is easy to use right out of the box on auto settings, but has many features found in more sophisticated equipment, including shooting in RAW. The picture quality is great. The G10 is small enough to fit in a purse or jacket pocket, so I am able to take it everywhere easily. The battery is long lasting, you can edit within the camera, and also shoot videos. Although the LCD is large and bright I wish it folded out and rotated for more shooting options like my old camera. The zoom is not as much as I would like but the wide angle is great and the 14.7 megapixel allows me to crop in and get a good shot of a distant subject. The hot shoe is a big plus for flash control. This is a great camera. I love it!!!

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
I've read some reviews that dont favor the G10. I dont agree. I have used DSLRs exclusively the past few years and I got this camera as a light weight alternative for hiking and rock climbing. Its a great camera and I am very happy with it. The image quality is simply the best of any compact I've tested. I dont need it to do ISO 800+ and one handed operation is a must for my application. The image stabilization is superb, giving me a few more stops at ISO 80, and also works well to make movies very smooth. The controls are very easy to use and very well thought out. I'd like an even wider lens but at 28mm it is working well so far. HD video would also be nice.
Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
I have been learning progressively more about digital photography and imaging over the past 5 years. The cameras that I have used have been getting progressively more sophisticated, from point and shoot to now the G10.
This camera is perfect for me now. It has many controls for optimizing an image. It has excellent image quality and pixel quantity. And, importantly, it has RAW format.
I've seen reviews where professional photographers turn up their noses at this camera, but for me it is excellent and ideal. The picture quality is a quantum leap up from the previous cameras I had, and it permits extensive customization of photos.

Usable up to asa 400 if you expose it correctly, not real good after that.
Can be used for jobs or as backup, very subtle, excellent point and shoot.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
Right off the bat, I could see major chromatic aberrations, more so on the left side of images with high contrast scenes. This was very disappointing. I have used Canon point-and-shoot cameras for many years as a companion to my Nikon SLRs.
I was also very disappointed at noise at modest ISO settings. Rather than give the G10 a better sensor, Canon opted for what the mass market can only appreciate. That is, higher megapixel ratings at the big trade-offs of lower noise, better dynamic range, and high ISO performance.
JPGs at their highest quality setting still yielded major compression artifacts. Using RAW (CR2) format is the only real choice, if quality matters. (I have worked with JPG and RAW formats extensively.)
On one hand, I like the traditional control knobs on the top of the camera, but on the other hand, by their design, they are too easy to accidentally nudge and change without realizing it.

Have been looking for a camera with great image quality to replace heavy gear for backpacking/hiking. The G10 is nearly perfect for the purpose of traveling light, taking photos of slow (stationary) objects and excellent image quality that look great printed. Photos are great through ISO 400. Also, gotta love the dials and the immediate visual cue that they provide. I really wish my DSLR had these. May view my initial shots with this camera on Flickr under Nurse Kato.
If this camera was weather sealed it would be even better.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
Well it seem to be well built, but I do not like retractable lenses, I wish Canon would make a lens with internal zooming & focusing, so that it would be stronger and require less battery power and less time to be ready. But for now it's still a great camera. A bigger sensor would be great too. The shutter button should be stronger.

Great little camera, Some cool features like timer face detection, exposure bracketing, IS, wide view 28mm and LCD size! But the sensor noise & digital artifacts limit your options for enlargements....Adobe Camera RAW still isn't updated with the G10, so Canon's supplied software has to be used for now if your shoting RAW's. Highest aperture is f8.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
I really wanted to like this camera. I have been searching for a decent small digital camera, so I don't have to lug my D700 everywhere I go. I always carry a camera and thought this might be perfect for times I don't expect to make photos. Well, while it appears very well made, has a very nice monitor, I just couldn't live with only f8 in manual mode (not sure about A or P mode), or the high Noise above ISO 400. Also, I'm a long time Nikon user and the controls just aren't up to the logic of Nikon. Take the manual mode, it has a nice dedicated knob to switch between modes but manual mode default is to adjust the shutter speed. To adjust the f stop took a lot of button-guessing, head scratching. Too many controls need the manual to operate. Maybe to Canon people it all makes sense.Any way, it went back, and my search for a digital Contax T2, or Nikon 28/35ti continues.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G10 Compact Digital Camera with Built-in Flash, 14.7 Megapixel, 5x Optical/4x Digital Zoom:
The Canon G10 should satisfy almost any DSLR user who needs a more compact but full-featured and fully-controllable camera for travel and personal activity photography.
I acquired mine through a local dealer, though I plan to buy some accessories for the camera through Adorama, including a Think Tank Modulus Pouch to use as a belt case, and another, larger SDHC card. Normally I use a Nikon DSLR, but in the past, all save one of our compact cameras have been Canon, who continues with this model to make a superior product, this one in several respects better than the Nikon P5100 I bought about a year ago, whose lack of a true wide angle lens, and whose slow dim light focusing disappointed me.
The G10 by contrast offers a 35 mm equivalent range of 28 to 140, very adequate for most "personal" photography, and better than, say, the recent Panasonic/Leica model which, while offering a 24 mm wide setting, on the long end only goes to 60 mm.
The G10 feels solid, and controls key functions such as exposure compensation, ISO setting and shooting mode via external dials. The zoom control surrounds the shutter release, where I prefer to have it. So far, operation has been very quick and especially, the focus even in dim room light seems as fast as my Nikon D300.
While a smaller sensor camera like this one should preferentially be used at the base ISO, in this case 80, the same speed as the Kodacolor of decades ago, the image quality seems adequate up to ISO 400. The IS, the image stabilization, seems to work very well, allowing some lightly braced wide angle shots to appear sharp at 1/2 second. The camera has i-Contrast, which appears to be very similar to Nikon's Active-D Lighting, and novel for a compact, offers Servo-AF, for use on moving subjects, not to mention that the focus area selected can be adjusted to any one of 15 positions. There are many other advanced features.
This is TOO MUCH camera for anyone who does not have prior photographic knowledge and experience. Someone who does not already own a DSLR probably would be better off spending their money on a D40 or Canon Rebel XTi. BUT, for a knowledgeable user looking for a back-up to a DSLR, for use particularly for travel, or during personal action activities, the Canon G10 appears to be the best option on the market.
