I bought this camera because I got tired of lugging around all my camera equipment everywhere I went all the time and just wanted a camera for everyday/personal use to save on the wear and tear of my professional equipment. I love the way this little camera fits in my hand. It is small and you can work all the dials and buttons easily. I love the portability, the ability to use my flash with it and the ability to shoot manual or automatic and the video is great. This little camera does everything and I love it. The only drawback is that sometimes the picture quality is not as good as I would ike it to be. I guess that is because I am so use to the quality from my pro cameras . All in all I love this camera and would get it again or buy it as a gift.

I was debating between this and the Nikon P7000 as a compact alternative to my DSLR and bag o' lenses. I wanted something that I could carry around so I would never miss a shot again because I didn't want to bring my larger camera with me. After looking at many specs and reviews, I finally decided to get this over the P7000. The main deal breakers on the 7000 were the lack of an opposable screen and several bad reviews about speed when shooting in RAW. The G12 is a little limited with it's zoom range, but I bought this as more of an as-needed type of camera anyway. For wildlife or other shots needing a longer zoom, I'll use my 70-300 on my D90.
Feature wise, this little guy is packed to the gills. I have most of the control that I have on my D90 without the extra size and weight. It even has a hot shoe for adding an external flash, or in my case remote triggering an off camera flash. The G12 hasn't gotten great reviews when it comes to video, but I really don't plan on shooting much video with it, and I really can't see buying any still camera for its video features or lack thereof.
Size wise, yes it is not the most compact camera out there, but still small enough and light enough that I can carry it in my jacket or cargo pants pocket without it getting in the way.
Bottom line, this is a great compact camera for the photographer that wants everything in a small package.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G12 Compact Digital Camera with 720p HD Video:
I bought the Canon G12 as a camera to carry in my purse, since my DSLR wasn't compact enough to carry with me all the time. I also bought it for a vacation in Mexico that I knew I would be snorkeling at and wanted an underwater camera that would take great pictures and would be easy to use. With the underwater housing my wishes were met and I got some GREAT pictures. This took good video of my family having fun on vacation and great action shots when they were goofing around at the pool. I do miss my DSLR, and it doesn't always focus where I would like or compose pictures quite like I want, but over all it met all my needs.

I couldn't be more in love with the Canon G series.
Don't get me wrong: I absolutely adore my dslr's and the handful of film cameras that I can't seem to stop using, but all in all, if you're going to run around this big juicy world with a camera always in hand, THIS is the camera to get your mitts on if you want a compact camera that packs the whollop of a slr and gives you full creative control.
It would be too easy to wax poetic about the tech specs the G12 has to offer. So I won't. You can do all that math for yourself. Anything this compact that gives you the option of full manual mode, combined with RAW capture and a hot-shoe... well... enough said.
I think the biggest jewel in this camera's crown is its auspicious and disarming size.
Not only do I find myself far more likely to carry this camera because it's so easy to deal with when it slips right into a coat pocket (or in the warmer months, isn't all that heavy on its strap around my neck) I also find that because it's so very small, people aren't at all intimidated when I start composing shots with this body. So... I get away with more. ;)
Stop shopping! Buy this camera (and if you can, a nice little speedlight with bounce-capable goodness). It's a must have, regardless of your *status* in the world of photography.

I own a Canon EOS5D/10D/20D but was always looking for a small /light unit to satisfy my needs. I found on this compact what I was looking for, easy to carry and ready to take a picture at any moment. I like the high ISO and had taken great night shots with available light. I highly recommend it . Very satisfied. Great camera for the price.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G12 Compact Digital Camera with 720p HD Video:
This camera was a replacement for an old Sony digital. Man, were we surprised at how fast the G12 is, and how easy it is to take video. It's easy to switch between modes, too. It's a point and shoot if you want that, or you can tweak it just as you like. Best of both worlds. Frankly, I'm amazed how long the battery lasts. A friend of mine who is an award winning photog for The Toledo Blade recommended the G12, and I'm very glad I listened to him. We're now using it to take all sorts of pictures we never considered before. Can't wait to take photography class using the G12.
The G12 is our Christmas present to each other so we used it quite a bit. It's fast enough that I was able to catch many facial expressions of the kids while they opened their presents. The digital cameras I had in the past, were never fast enough to catch that. I'm really impressed at how it works and all for under five hundred dollars!

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G12 Compact Digital Camera with 720p HD Video:
The perfect backup camera and for hiking or skiing. Almost as good as DSLR but without the bulk. Surprisingly good for a small point and shoot. This is acutally larger than a compact. No learning curve if you have a Canon already. Video is okay, but that is not what I purchased it for. The pull out view finder will cause camera shake. Not for action or sports.

good price for this multi-use camera. I take it with me when I am in the field as my back up camera. have already gotten a picture I wouldn't have with my DSLR because I had to shot fast

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G12 Compact Digital Camera with 720p HD Video:
I have been photographing for many years as both professional and enthusiast with Canon's, Leica's, Hasselblad's and Nikon's, and I am continually amazed at the image quality from the Canon G12, even from its jpegs (RAW is very impressive). I typically photograph with both formats, jpg and RAW, and save times are typically three seconds at most--not inconvenient but not instant either. Startup is very fast with the G12, AF is accurate, and the close-up capabilities are crisply impressive at wide-angle. Lens flare is virtually non-existent, image contrast is very high, sharpness is excellent, noise is extremely well controlled, and chromatic aberrations are hard to find (and easily corrected with software). I'd previously owned a G9, which was notable, but the G12 blows it away. I've also owned the Panasonic ZS7, which the G12 leaves in the dust, and own an Olympus E-P2, which G12 images compare favorably with although not as detailed. Even when printing at 13 x 18 inches the G12 results are surprisingly nuanced and detailed with little or no noise (ISO 80-200). Needless to say, I'm very happy with the results. I think it's Canon best G series to date.
MOVIES: AF (continuous), AE Lock, and Exposure Compensation ARE NOT AVAILABLE in movie mode! In other words whichever focus point you began with when you started shooting is exactly where the camera will remain for the remainder of that video. No, you can't begin with a close-up and then shift to focus on something far. The AF won't work. Which is dumb. A huge disappointment from Canon for those interested in video! I hope they fix this with a firmware update.
SOFTWARE: The included Canon Digital Photo Professional software does a great job of converting RAW files into 16-bit or 8-bit Tiff, including manipulating the parameters for Unsharp Mask, and notates the RAW file so that your settings can be recalled when re-opened. It also lets you adjust White Balance, Contrast, Tone Curve, Saturation, Sharpness, Noise, Crop, etc. While it doesn't have the finesse of controls in Adobe Camera Raw (Adobe Bridge) it does a very good job, including Batch processing.
HANDLING: I found the handling and heft of the Canon G12 to be very comfortable, especially in using the swivel-tilt LCD screen (which is very sharp, by the way). The knurled ring on the front just below the shutter/zoom button (which allows you to adjust shutter speed of aperture, depending on Mode) is very useful, although I times I found it too easy to mistake it for the zoom control.
Infrequently I found myself wishing that the zoom range was a bit longer, perhaps 28 to 200mm. But realistically I think Canon's decision to limit the zoom range to 28-140mm (more than enough for most situations) is probably one of the factors that makes the lens such an outstanding performer. The Canon G12 is a great little camera that tries to compete with Micro Four Thirds and blows point-and-shoots out of the water.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G12 Compact Digital Camera with 720p HD Video:
An excellent camera for the price with great portability. Having owned an earlier model of the G series, this latest G12 model has evolved into an excellent general purpose camera. It's easy to use, and takes excellent photos for anyone looking for a quality camera with great portability. The only limiting factor is it's zoom capabilities, but then it's still a great choice for the price. It's ability to create files in JPEG and RAW makes this camera very special for anyone who desires to maximize their photographic experiences.

Comments about Canon Canon PowerShot G12 Compact Digital Camera with 720p HD Video:
This camera is a very good back up for the serious photographer's DSLR. Used in one of it's auto modes, it would also be an excellent camera for the casual snapshot enthusiast. My only complaint is that it's difficult to hold without pressing buttons.
