Until I win the lottery, this is my favorite Leica. Easy to handle, almost pocket sized. Good quality images (raw + jpg). Noticeable lag difference between class 2 and 4 SDHC cards, but minimal between class 4 and class 10. Good HD video, but won't compare to dedicated HD video camera.

Great little camera with a fast lens for a point and shoot. Takes great party pictures, then goes for the gusto on wide landscapes. Love the way I can change aspect ratios on the fly. Nice sensor reproduces beautiful colors if not the most accurate. Leica lens kicks b**t. I bought the limited Titanium finish edition with hand sewn case. Extra 140 bucks but way worth it. Feels and looks like a million bucks. This and my Nikon d300 cover all situations. Try the "Dynamic B&W" setting. Cool.

Great wide angle. Lots of control with manual settings, but lots of ease of use with snap shot and scene settings. Would be perfect camera if lag time were less and if there was a better telephoto to go with the great wide angle. Leica "look" and feel with improved software and superior re-sale justify cost over similar Panasonic model.

It's a Leica but it's not Nikon or Canon

Comments about Leica Leica D-LUX 4 Compact Digital Camera, 10.1MP, with 2.5x LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON Zoom Lens, 3" LCD Display, Black:

I bought this because I want to have a Raw image file camera with me at all times and this is 1) a Leica, 2) very small. To that end... perfect. The images are just not quite "pro-quality" though. They are very noisy. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the best Nikon and Canon offers with their pro cameras. I have used it for a few things commercially so it "will" pay for itself... but it's nowhere close to a pro-camera. I wonder how the P&S Canon's or Panasonic's would do?

The best small digital camera I have used. Used mainly for available light indoors. Small group pictures. Wide landscapes. Not a telephoto camera by design. LCD viewing mildly difficult in very bright light.

The photo colors are stunning. Macro is also stunning. The raw files however are unique to Leica cameras. Full function software is included. The batteries are small. I bought two extras and charge them before I leave with my camera. I like having the flash hot shoe. It works with my Nikon SB600 flash.

I really like the camera but it is a bit pricey. Panasonic makes a very similar camera but I have not tried it.

Leica D-LUX 4

Comments about Leica Leica D-LUX 4 Compact Digital Camera, 10.1MP, with 2.5x LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON Zoom Lens, 3" LCD Display, Black:

I bought the DL-4 for use as a small travel camera when I don't want to drag my Nikon D300. Within its limitations as a compact camera (i.e., short, but fast zoom, and noise at E.I 800 and above) the images that come directly from the camera are astonishing. It has made me leave home the D300 more frequently than I ever would have expected. It is ideal for inobtrusive or street photography.

This is not a point an shoot for fast action photos, nor for quick family snapshots. Its wide angel lens and brilliant raw capture is ideal for set up landscape or architectural shots. It is fundamentally well constructed , although the battery and card bay seems a little fragile with its plastic cover. The hot shoe is exceptionally useful as a replacement for the pop-up flash -- it takes the larger Leica flash and illuminates a whole room in low light. A baby M8.2 without the interchangeable lenses -- but great for carrying everywhere in pocket or in the great leather case -- also the double handles and carrying strap allow for a safety factor when moving that was absent from the D Lux-3.

I am so happy with this camera!! Someone might say that we who own this camera overpaid for the red dot. May be so, but I have no regret. I have not seen a B&W image come straight out of the camera that could look that good. So far I only shot in two modes: Dynamic BW and Vibrant color.

Yes, I know it's the photographer, not the camera. But camera like this helps. save a lot of time tweaking on the computer for the right look.

Battery last a long time. I shot a wedding with about 300 images and 5 HD videos, average 5 min. each and still have half of the juice!

If you want a P&S that can do everything, look no further. It is a couple hundred dollars more than its supposed equivalent, the DMC-LX3, but worth it.

Unlike my ‘bulky' Nikon D-300, the little Leica D-Lux 4 (not much bigger than a pack of Marlboro 100’s) offers up a host of valuable reasons why you might consider buying one for yourself! If you love macro, you will love its ability to focus down to 1/3 of an inch at the wide angle focal length. And speaking of focal lengths, it offers up an effective 5.1-12.8 zoom lens, (35mm equivalent is 24mm-60mm) and captures a 10+ mega-pixel file each and every time. In addition, it offers up the wide aperture of f/2 when shooting at the 24mm angle and f/2.8 when shooting on the 60mm end. That’s fantastic news when shooting in low-light and/or when you forgot the tripod. Of course it offers up Aperture, Shutter, Program Modes BUT also full manual exposure and even manual focus! I love this camera! The only downside is that it’s not cheap, but than it wouldn’t truly be a Leica if it were cheap!

I bought this as a gift for my brother. It almost didn't get to him. The camera takes some stunning pictures. The lens, is wide, perfect for walking around the city with. I can't compare it to the Panasonic brother LX3 because I haven't seen that one in action but the colours and the incredibly good firmware make this a photographer's camera all the way.
