Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix P80 Digital Camera, Black - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I bought this camera for my wife. This is a wonderful camera for someone who doesn't want a DSLR and wants to spend a lot of money on extra lenses. The photographs it takes are really good. It does have problems with low light conditions however. If you leave it on auto to make the decisions for you then it will go down to a higher ISO such as 800, 1000 to get a descent shutter speed.

What I have done for her is set it in shutter priority mode with it set on 1/60 of a second for most shots. She has taken lots of photos at the beaches, Disney World and other places and the photographs have come out beautiful.

For an everyday casual person wanting to take some nice pictures at a reasonable price, this camera will not let you down. Remember, just like all other cameras that doesn't have a large aperature on the lense, if you are in low light conditions it may take a few seconds to focus.

Before going completely digital, I used this for studies on studio set ups. This is a great travel camera, although any camera with a long zoom is a little bulky.

I use it for website pictures only, and it has served me well. Defective lens cover, I had to add a few thin layers of tape to shim it and tighten the fit. Bought it as a refurb, and it has been very durable. No camera case, just bounces around my backpack everyday for two years no problems.

Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix P80 Digital Camera, Black - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I bought the Coolpix P80 as a general carry camera, something I could keep in my car in case I saw something I could not pass on getting a shot. I did not purchase it for work. As such I don't use it often enough to stay familiar with the menu functions and settings as I do with my work camera. My opinion of the P80 is diminished somewhat because I have and use a much better camera regularly.

My P80 was a factory refurb and on sale to boot. It was very inexpensive given it's capabilities. The range of optical zoom is tremendous. I have seen no need to venture into the electronic zoom, which is good, because the image quality would suffer. On that note, the dark portions of high contrast images tend to show noise. I am thinking the higher ISO settings are there for advertising only and really are not useable because of noise. The focus and shutter lag times are a bit long.

I wish this camera had a hot shoe or at least a PC socket. It only has a built in flash and the option is only slave flashes in manual mode and still stuck with the primary flash in about the worst possible location. The onboard flash is TTL controlled and does a reasonable job of proper exposure. Red eye reduction is available.

There are two displays, the big LCD on the back and another in the viewfinder. It is not a SLR, but the viewfinder LCD is a great improvement over trying to see the display on the back in sunlight or glare. It is important to remember to manually switch between them, otherwise you might think the camera is dead when the back display does not light up when the camera is turned on.

The main control dial is typical Nikon with P (programmed auto), S (shutter priority), A (aperture priorty), M (manual). It has a full auto mode where most people (myself included) should leave it unless they learn to use the menu. There is a single command dial like the Nikon consumer grade DSLRs have to set shutter, aperture, etc. So one can adjust the exposure old school too. Surprise, auto bracketing is available.

The camera shape is not compact. There is no way around that and have 18x optical range. There is no provision to accept filters. There are adapters available (Bower) which requires a different lens cap and adds a maybe 1/4" to the length.

It can do video but the sound track is cluttered with auto focus noise. If video is your thing, I would look elsewhere.

I call this a better grade point and shoot and in that group, the shortcomings are on par. It does offer many SLR features and settings. For someone thinking of learning the basics of camera control, the options are there. I would buy it again.

Far better than run of the mill point and shoot digitals. More options and you don't need a bag full of accessories! I recieved the wrong lens cap and battery charger, but adorama took care of this promptly!

Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix P80 Digital Camera, Black - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

The Coolpix P80 is almost an SLR, but not quite. You don't have to buy expensive lenses for it and it can do almost anything an SLR can do, like manual settings and stuff. It does very nice macro and zoom too. But you can't do any more than an 8 second time exposure and the manual focus is done electronically, by pushing buttons. Those are the only two things I have noticed that are different than an SLR. It's pretty nice for the price.

Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix P80 Digital Camera, Black - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Replaced a Fuji 1500 with this Nikon and it is light-years better. Perfect auto focus. Good recovery speed. Brilliant pictures. Great zoom. I give it perfect grades. Only drawbacks:
- does not take glass filters (unless you buy a clumsy aftermarket holder)
- slow to process in speed mode. Shoots about 8 pictures then takes 10 seconds to file them.
- some blue streaking in high light conditions like water shots.
- Uses a special battery so you need to carry extras (they are cheap on eBay)
Overall, a great value for twice the price.

Still learning this new toy! It is more camera than I have ever owned and a little overwhelming but really easy to follow the onscreen guides. I love it and am getting ready for a 30 day trip to South America (9 countries) and plan to do a photo essay of the trip. Thank you Adorama and to Nikon for an amazing product.

Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix P80 Digital Camera, Black - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is my second digital camera. I am pretty much old school when it comes to cameras. I use film. In the past I resisted the use of digital for other then casual use because the resolution was just not there. The new ones have changed that a lot. I purchased the p80 because I wanted to experiment with digital without putting much money in. It has good controls although a f11 would be an improvement. The lens is first rate and I am pleased with the results it produces. My biggest complaint is that it is currently not possible to put filters over the lens. My old Canon Digital allows for it.

I am now considering a Nikon DSLR because of the experience of using the P80. Digital has now grown up. This camera is a good all round compact

Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix P80 Digital Camera, Black - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a great camera. Seems to be just a step down from a DSLR. Burst Mode is great for action shots. The only downside is that in Burst Mode the picture quality is dropped down from 10MP to 3MP.
