I bought this as a gift for my son who has had other cameras in the past. He is extremely happy with the Nikon Coolpix S550 and has nothing negative to say about it.

I would recommend this camera to the average person who just wants to take good clear snapshots. The smile feature and the face frame feature are fun for a while but end up turned off most of the time. Low light situations are very grainy, I can't seem to get past that. The older version of this camera wasn't as bad. I love to take time lapsed photos at night, but with this camera it's a NO GO! I do like the panorama assist feature.

This camera is not bad for the High Resolution and the price, but it could do better.
As noted in the "CONS" section, the camera is slow at times between pictures. We use an 8GB SDHC card at Class 6 speed (supposed to be the fastest rating for SDHC) and it is still slow. The battery life MIGHT last through 1 or 2 birthday parties - the old camera would last 6 months easily.
I expected more from Nikon. I am an IT guy whos is pretty good with gadgets so if I can't figure it out, then the average user won't either. (I do admit that I have not and never do read the manual.)

This is a great PS to stick in your pocket & take along easily. It still has a wide range of versatility due to it's many modes and 5x Optical Zoom. It's no DSLR but it takes great shots for what it is.

It is really very nice piece of hardware to look at but results are not as good as the product claims. I have tried this indoor and outdoor, it is terible in indoor and poor outdoors.
I found white spots on my picutes and really very hard to get the focus done.
I would not recommand this product to anyone.

I use this product for fun picture-taking. It is an AWESOME camera. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family. My only complaint is the time lapse between taking pictures. But I love the numerous features...like with any new product cool things are only found by playing around with it and I am still discovering new features.

Buyers should beware that it is not the easiest camera to become acquainted with, even if it seems to be marketed to the general public. The "auto" settings leave something to be desired, however Nikon makes up for this in the inclusion of a slew of adjustments. It is VERY important to note that many people will not always feel they have the time or desire to shuffle through the menus and make adjustments prior to pictures. If you desire a point and shoot camera, this should probably speak to you. It is a fine camera though, and if you can deal with this issue all the same it is something to consider.

I purchased this camera as a simple point and shoot to supplement my D40. The D40 has proven to be a great camera. The S550 does not deserve the Nikon name on it.
Upon unpacking it, I was suspect immediately. I tried to take pictures of my gray cat with living room lighting. The camera refused to focus. I passed it off as the low contrast of his color.
On my first photo expedition with the camera, the fragile lens mechanism failed within 2 hours. The photos I did get were acceptable. This was all outdoors.
After two weeks in the shop for repairs, I again took the camera out for another try. This time it was indoors, in an office cafeteria. Not really what I would call low light. The S550 again refused to focus. I'm not sure what the A/F assist illuminator is for. The photos were noisy, out of focus and poor quality.
There are great point and shoot cameras out there, this is not one.
