I've had my D200 for almost a week and have made thousands of shots with it already in many varrying lighting situations and it excelled at everything I threw at it. I love that it gives me the colors that I want without having to use an 81a warming filter. Menus are fast and easy to navigate through if you need to change settings a lot like I do. I purchased this kit so that I would have a lens that I wouldn't mind having around little kids when I'm doing youth sports pictures, that way I can leave my (almost 4x the price) Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 DX lens at home and save it for better gigs.
All-in-all, I've been amazed by the image quality I've been able to get using the 18-70 kit lens, and my Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 DX lens.
*The D200 replaced my D2H and so far my only complaint is solely based on the fact that I was used to the BIG D2H, the D200 is a little smaller, so something to think about if you're like me .

My first Prosumer/Professional digital camera purchase. A solid choice, and also built well.Have used Pro Kodak digital that was much bulkier and became to heavy during several hours of shooting. The D200 is very flexible, much more like holding an older film Nikon.
Would purchase another one!

My first digital, but I really like it. Still getting used to digital world. Compliments my F5 nicely.

I was going to hold out for a full framed sensor since I already have quite a bit of money invested in Nikon lenses. I ended up buying the kit that included the 18-70 mm lens. This still works out to 27-105mm with the 1.5x multiplier caused by the smaller sensor. My 24-120 VR is now a 36-180mm but my 80-400 VR is now 120-600mm. This extra range came in really handy when I was shooting wildlife in Costa Rica. I'm so glad I switched from film since I can instantly confirm my shots. This was critical in Costa Rica since humming birds don't like to stay still, long exposure shots of volcanos are tricky, and cloud forrest tend to creat tricky lighting conditions and focusing problems. Battery life is great and digital noise is very good below 800 ISO. The memory buffer is also amazing if you shoot lots of consecutive shots (sports or modeling). All in all, I am very pleased with this camera.
My only regret is that the new D80 has the same sensor and cost a bit less while offering most of the features. I needed my camera when I needed it so I guess I can't complain too much. I also have no idea what to do with my F100 and N90s since the D200 is so capable.
I am planning to add the 18-200 VR lens to my arsenal and it will probably be the last time I have to change lenses. It covers practically everything I need except for the really long shots.

I'm having a great time with this product.
The only thing I would do different would be to wait for one with the 18-200mm VR lense.
Some things in the book are not clear, such as setting custom white balance, and using it with the SB-800 flash.

Because it was in short supply, I overpaid and took a lens I didn't need. That was quickly forgotten in the joy of sharp, accurate pictures that go right into Photoshop at the end of the day.
Now, if someone would come up with a reliable way to feed the JPEGs into the HD on my TV, I could replace my travel slides.

First digital I've owned. First thing I liked - changing film speed on the fly. Second was not having to scan the negatives. Biggest issues I've run into - lens flare and some issues with glare with flash (SB600)

The perfect replacement for my F100, which I loved. The professional feel of the controls and the heft are the same. The slightly smaller body made it easier for me to reach buttons on the front while gripping the camera with my small hands, but the grip itself was slightly superior on the F100. What really surprised me is how I could take available-light pictures at unexpectedly slow shutter settings. Vibrations caused by the mirror are almost absent. Adding that to the great low-light performance of the digital sensor compared to film, low-light shooting is improved by several stops. The maximum rated operating temperature of the D200 is less than peak summer temperatures in Arizona, but I suspect other DSLR's are no better in that respect. The 18-70 lens was what was available when I purchased, but in retrospect I am surprised to find that I would buy it again today. When I have owned longer zooms, I rarely used their longer settings (you may be different!). The 18-200 VR has such bad reported bokeh at the long end that I wouldn't want it, and it as well as the 18-135 have more distortion at the short end. I compared the 18-70 with my highly acclaimed 35/1.4 AIS and my 85/2 AIS and 105/2.8 macro AIS
using a resolution chart. The 18-70 at 70 was about equal in resolution and contrast to the 85/2, and at 35 it was somewhat superior to the 35/1.4 (not only at wide open but also at 4 and 5.6). Even in a very dim room I could not find a shutter/aperture combination where the 35 would provide better sharpness/noise combination than the 18-70 at 35 (both hand-held). Only the macro lens provided slightly better sharpness/contrast than the 18-70.

an easy upgrade from my Nikon n6006 film camera, just felt good to hold. I was a bit intimidated when it first arrived but am learning more daily.
Learning the controls on this camera I beleive is making me a better photographer.

The camera (overall) is a great camera. I'm not 100% thrilled with the low-lighting use as the grain can be a bit much. The auto-focus can be inconsistent at times as well. I found that if you set the camera to all 'auto' settings, in an 'average' lighting environment, it takes amazing photos. When you go advanced (fully manual), however, it gets inconsistent and unpredictable.
I had a couple problems with the rubber shell on the body peeling off as I grip my camera tight and it pulls. The battery life in this camera is shorter than previous models as well too.

As a professional I prefer Nikon cameras and their lenses. Nikon Has always had great optics. They have not disappointed me yet.

Since the D200 came on the market even further advances in digital photography and cameras have been made. The one thing I would like on my camera is the anti-dust feature of the Canon digital range. A further plus would be the anti-shake feature - this would be especially useful in low light conditions

I am upgrading from a D70 after two years, and couldn't be happier with the D200. It puts all the controls that were hidden deep in menus on the D70 right at my finger tips. It shows in the viewfinder everything that is going on so I don't have to take my eye away. It is also a more rugged, more weather proof camera in general, which is important for me as I like to take it everywhere. I would recommend the camera to anybody willing to spend the money. The lens is out of date though -- I only got it because it was the only one available at the time (the 18-135 and 18-200 were back ordered).

I like the camera very much, this my 5th Nikon DSLR. I think the overall performance is great. There are some low light auto-focus issues, where the camera wouldn't fire even with the pop up flash or the SB800. I had to up the ISO or miss the shot and move on to a brighter/ more contrasty site.
