I'm a college photography undergraduate student. I wanted a camera that could outperform a Canon XS or Nikon D3000. I'm extremely pleased I purchased this product, money well spent for a budget-tight student.

The camera is awesome and worth every penny. If you don't own a DLSR you seriously need to rethink how important it is to capture moments of your life or the loved ones around you. A point and shoot camera is no comparison to how well this camera can capture action or portrait photographs. The small cameras have a purpose, when you can't lug around a bigger camera, but you will definitely be missing out on a moment in time you may never get back. I was shocked at how well the 200mm lens works with zooming into the action from the top row within a gyn. Also, I found myself not needing to use the continuous 3 frames per second to capture action as the shutter response is instantaneous. I only wish I would have purchased this camera, or one like it, long ago.

This is my first dslr camera and it's perfect. Bought this with a kit so came with alot of extras. It's so easy to use and just after a week I'm taking incredible photos. If your looking to buy this you shouldnt look at anything else. This is the way to go. Also the video on this is great 1080p.

Bought this camera for my wife, who in years past had done some professional photography. The features of the D3100 are impressive and the images are fantastic. I (we) currently own a D80 (love that camera) which was a bit large and heavy for her to handle, so the smaller and lighter D3100 fit the bill. We mostly photograph wild life, landscapes and pretty much anything that catches our eye. This camera works like a charm. The easy to read, large LCD screen with current shooting parameters and liveview makes it simple to change settings. The image quality of 14mp is outstanding. She hasn't had any complaints so it must be a darn good camera. The best part is I get my D80 back.

I have bought a few point and shoot digital cameras and they are just fine for snapshots, but to take pictures that you will save for life, well they deserve more and this is it. Love the fact that it is ready to shot when you are, no more missed shots waiting on the camera to react.

I use this camera for every day things. Flowers, friends, cats, etc etc. It's simple to use. For a DSLR, it's a really nice size. I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone. It seems pretty durable as well. It fell from about 3 ft up but worked just fine. No dents or scratches either. Very happy with the Nikon D3100!!

One of my biggest doubts about DSLRs was the white balance accurancy. The Nikon D3100 has a good autobalance function and easy controls and menus. If you wanna buy your first DSLR you should consider this one.

The outfit looks bulky and heavy - but actually it is not.
Little time is needed to adapt to this camera's format
and learn its functions.
Larger LCD monitor view is crisp and makes field editing so much easier.
AF-VR allows more room for creativity and spontaneous image opportunities.
Nice resolution.
The grip could be trimmed down, not all users have large hands. I miss my MD12 speed grip it made handling a comparative breeze.

I had been using canon Products since I bought my first SLR at 18 years old. It was a Canon AE-1 Program, and served me well. I purchased a Nikon D90 2 years ago and was very happy with it. The D3100 was for my daughter's Christmas/graduation and and one of the advantages is the interchangability of the lenses between the two.Very good camera for the money.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D3100 14.2 Megapixels Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens, 3in TFT LCD Display:
I'm a beginner DSLR user and I chose this one because it was the latest entry level DSLR (out of Nikon or Canon) and from the reviews, appeared to be serious enough to "grow into". It's really fun and fairly easy to use for someone who has only used a compact camera. However, I soon found that the 'auto' mode can only do so much. I have since been learning more about taking the type of pictures I want using the M mode and am having a blast doing it.
I upgraded to a DSLR from a compact camera because I was becoming increasingly frustrated with the slow speed of the compact which caused me to miss lots of shots of the kids. Also, I found that there was not much room for improving the quality of my pictures.
With the DSLR, I love the "magazine" quality of the photos I now take (blurred background, realistic colours, and an overall quality look) and I also love having more control on the end result.
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. It has led me to a wonderful new world of taking great pictures.

Nikon has another winner. If you are beginner or serious photographer, the d3100 is great for the price.

I am a beginner with DSLR and the D3100 so far hasn't disappointed me. The Auto mode is very easy to use and similar to a Point-and-Shoot camera. The stock lens 18-55mm are good enough for me, my primary uses are for travelling shooting.

We returned a D90 and got this one instead. You pretty much get all the same features, but higher megapixels, smaller, and much lighter. The LCD is the only thing we miss, its just not that great a resolution and we often aren't certain, based on what we see on the lcd, whether we are getting good shots.still, happy we bought this camera body and spent more money on lenses instead.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D3100 14.2 Megapixels Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens, 3in TFT LCD Display:
The D3100 has the image quality of my D90 and the compact size and weight of my D60. I actually prefer it to my D90 because of its size and weight. I had been considering a micro 4/3 system, but the D3100 is almost as small and light, has better image quality, and has an optical viewfinder instead of an EVF and a wider selection of lenses and doodads.
It has very good color and low noise at high ISO's. Even 12,800 is usable. It's also the quietest SLR I've ever used and I've used a lot of them. It has a quiet mode that is even quieter. This is a great feature for shooting candids or for shooting in churches and museums.

The fact that this is so light makes it a perfect walk around camera with my long lens (18-250) I don't need to use a tripod.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D3100 14.2 Megapixels Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens, 3in TFT LCD Display:
PROS:- Lighter and smaller than the D5000- Nice ergonomic grip with rubber on the back- Buttons are much improved, and they also added dedicated info button instead of "sharing" functions- Dedicated live-view toggle with red record button for instant video- Flash is better- Dedicated top toggle for shooting mode; single, continuous burst, 10-second timer, quiet mode. This is awesome at this price point. Quiet mode is definitely a plus.- 3-inch screen is fantastic. That 2.8-inch swivel screen on the D5000 is useless. I'd rather have a larger screen for playback/review. I put on a GGS thin glass screen protector to save it. - Video 1080(24fps) works good, as does the continuous autofocus, the first autofocus on a DSLR.- Top selection knob is higher than before, makes turning with thumb a lot easier. - New battery now has a new CHARGER, one that plugs directly into a wall without having ANY cables.- HDMI Out, Yeeeees!!!!!!- I put on the CAMdapter and strap right away, and it doesn't interfere with battery compartment. - This has the 11-point autofocus system just like the D5000, D90, etc. However, while viewing thru the viewfinder the points light up differently, they go red and stay red instead of going green, and they are dots instead of the actual square brackets lighting up. - Shoots at 3 FPS at least!!!! I'm using a Sandisk Extreme III 8GB SDHC card. I couldn't get it to stop in burst mode, no problems with buffer. - Active-D lightening works good!! Yessssss!!!! - Allows you to work it now matter how smart or stupid. Has the standard program modes plus P, M, A, S. - Nice review functions, with full calendar, etc. You can even adjust HOW you review, doing it like a flip, fade, cube, etc, etc. Show histogram, settings, etc. - Nice in-camera editing features. Trim, reduce size, filter effects, black and white, monochrome, vivid and sepia, etc are all in-camera, after the fact features. -Nice viewfinder with diopter adjustment. I like the eyecup as well, much more comfortable then say higher-priced D5000, D90, etc, etc. Just my preference though. - There is a review setting that will automatically rotate your photos on the screen and while playing back on the TV. Sweeeet. CONS: - It seems harder to get to sepia, monochrome, vivid, etc in this camera. It's on one of the back menus, instead of having it on the main screen menu. Hard to explain, but I did find it and can use it just as on a D5000. - Didn't come with any A/V cables, at all!!!!!!- New battery means I had to sell my 2 old spares and buy a new spare. Way to screw everyone over Nikon!!!- 3 frames per second seem faster with my SD Card, but 4.5 FPS would be better considering the new D7000 will shoot 6 FPS!!!!!! The D5000 does 4.5 FPS. - $699.00 is good price, but this is now the "entry-level" Nikon DSLR, and I think $599.00 would have been more like it. It'll probably be down some by Christmas though. - 14.2 MP, REALLY???? Should have just kept the megapixel at 12, no 10......actually 8 MP would be fine. More space taken up on my hard drive!!! That's all I've found for cons. This is a sweeeeet camera, and easily replaces the incredibly slow and stupid D3000. The D40 was the cheap standard for so long, and I'm pretty sure THIS will be the D40's replacement in camera circles. It just does everything very well.
