I bought the Nikon D50 because I wanted an inexpensive body that would be compatible with the one or two Nikon AF lenses I already owned.

It's fast - zero shutter lag on the first shot and instant-on. It's good in low light at 1600ISO, especially with a fast lens like my 50mm F1.4.

My big complaint about this camera is that it's hard to control and difficult to learn the different shooting modes. "Full manual" is a fantasy. You can't seem to shoot in a mode that gives you control over shutter and aperature at the same time. There are various modes that give you control over one or the other. And there are a couple of automatic modes. I've had a lot of trouble learning what the differences are. I have read bits of the manual but it takes serious effort to figure things out on this camera.

A casual user should keep it on full automatic at all times.

Love this camera. My first own digital SLR. At home we also have a Canon 350D (more expensive, lighter). Although the Nikon D50 is heavier, does not offer 100 ASA, can't modify the preset auto White Balance, I wouldn't trade it for the Canon 350D.
The LCD on top is better than the Canon's. The viewfinder's display is much brighter which makes it easy to change settings while looking through the viewfinder.
It's solid although a bit heavy, and the shutter mechanism is a weak point. I had to have mine replaced after it jammed, and heard in many forums this may be a common problem.
Nevertheless, I recommend this camera to anyone wanting to get into Digital SLR, great value for money.

Although I use another camera for my "main" camera, the D50 is an excellent back-up camera while in the field. As a travel/adventure photographer, I find myself using the smaller, lighter D-50 while on bicycle tours and/or white water rafting trips.

It is also great to have with you at all times for personal shots showing what goes on behind the scenes while on the road.

I wont buy anything but Nikon becuause they are the only camera company that has great cameras and great lenses to match. Easy to use, you dont have to be a master like the canon rebel or the new sony. Nikon also is way more reliable, faster, and all around better than canon and the new and upcoming sony dslr; and for less than most.
