Indoor volleyball is probably one of the toughest sports to photograph. Very low light, high speed action and no idea where the action will take place. The D700 makes taking these kinds of pictures much easier. Shooting at an ISO of 3200 all day long still gets clean pictures with little to no noise. The Auto ISO allows for lower ISO settings when the lighting, for whatever reason, gets better. Paired with the right glass you can get that "one special" picture that justifies the cost of the equipment.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
We used to use D300's and they were fantastic. We upgraded to D700's last year and were blown away by the image quality. Sometimes I find the need to shoot at ISO 3200 and still can't believe the images are that sharp.
The build quality is fantastic and all the controls are right where you'd expect them to be. I love that I can change settings on the fly without pausing to figure out what button does what or which dial changes what setting. The layout is very intuitive.
My wife and I specialize in family/children photography and this camera really cuts down on our post processing. It's nailed in camera almost every time unless we want to do some B&W edits.
This is a must have!

The camera performs as stated and is less dollar-wise than the D3 series. This model can be used by a camera buff or a professional.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I have had the D700 for around six months. We have traveled half way around the world a couple of times so far. I am convinced that the Nikon D700 is most Camera you can buy for the money. I would take no other camera in-trade for the D700 not even the Nikon D3x. I purchased the D700 and several Nikon lenses [...]. It is both very satisfying and frustrating to have a camera system where the operator is the weakest link. Hopefully time will change that.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Possibly the best bang for the buck. Many of the qualities of my professional level D3 for a lot less money. The viewfinder on the D3 shows 95% while the D3 shows 100%. That has to be taken into account when shooting.

The D700 for me is the best camera I have ever owned. The image quality is outstanding.

I am an avid photographer and I love this camera! for almost a month i have been visiting different websites just so i can make a decision in choosing what camera to upgrade to. Basing on my photography needs, D700 has out-shined most of it's competitors out there.
So if you are upgrading to the Fullframe format, get this one. I had no regrets or whatsoever on buying it. This tool has further enhanced/motivated the very core of my passion in photography! Images were awesome! Immediately i felt/saw a big difference. its performance is superb!

I use the Nikon D700 as my backup camera to my D3s with the MB-D10 and absolutely love it.
I have found myself shooting with this camera more and more. Very comfortable, correct weight, feels almost exactly like the D3s with the batt grip installed yet feels great without it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Select auto iso, jpeg normal, WB auto and active D-lighting and shoot away. The WB seems to get the exposure right every time, tungsten, incondescent or low light conditions. Letting the camera get the exposure optimized for you, lets you concentrate on getting the framing optimized. There are a lot of great cameras availble today and the D-700, IMHO, is on the short list to consider.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Upgraded from D300 to the D700 and so far it has outdone the D300 in all the paces I've put it through. Its quite heavy especially with a monster lens attached. Still in the process of evaluation but so far can't find any flaws that stick out with the exception of the 95% viewfinder.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
A very reasonable expense for the level of professional quality the Nikon D700 provides. Basically, Nikon, has put the best they offer in reach of photographers who want the best to learn and grow with. I have reached a long time goal in getting this system. I will be a student of its capabilities for the rest of my photographic life.

This camera focuses so fast and accurately I will never manual focus again unless I want to blur a photo. The 5 frames per second are really like lightening hitting the shutter. Twelve megapixels seems enough for me. Plenty of room for crops and enlargements. Add to this the side health benefits of using this as a free weight and your actually saving money when you but it. My wrists are already getting stronger!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I bought the D700 as an upgrade from my D300. I cannot believe I waited after only using it a few times so far. The low light capabilities are ridiculous. I shot some test pictures at ISO 6400 without noise reduction in my living room and it looked like I was shooting in the daytime. The full frame D700 is all I will need for a long long time
Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
So far, I have used the camera for portraits. The clarity is amazing. I stepped up from the D300, so the learning curve was nill. The camera for me is easy to use. When the images are cropped, it is easy to see the low noise offered because of the full size sensor. I am very happy with my decision to purchase this camera.

This is a nice step up from the D300. Low light performance is awesome. Large pixels produce rich dynamic range. Rock solid build. Couple the Nikon lens rebates on the high end fast glass and this is a deal too hard to refuse.

I'm a wedding photographer and I chose the D700 after using Sony for years because of it's wonderful ISO capabilities. Although it's slower to focus than the A900 Sony camera, the ISO more than makes up for that.

I love this thing...I am disappointed that I need to get a 400mm lens to recapture the focal length that I got with my DX format D2xs.........and I thought it was supposed to be lighter than my D2xs, but it is just as heavy...my chiropractor will still be happy! LOL But overall, it blows my D2xs away.........I'm very pleased, especially at the price point!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I am a wedding and portrait photographer and this is the main camera body that I use. Yes this is "expensive" and yes for a lot of folks this will be too much camera for too much money. But, if you want something that is light-weight (compared to the D3 or other pro bodies)that will give you professional quality images this is what you want.
Having used this camera for a year now the ISO performance that it offers has become a basic feature, and non-negotiable when it comes to thinking about buying any other bodies. I routinely take this up to 2500 ISO with very usable results. Obviously you want to shoot at a lower ISO, but if you have to take it up there you can.
The ergonomics are another plus. This body is insanely easy to use, contrary to some of the negative reviews. If you know Nikons then this will be a walk in the park. The menus are laid out exactly as you'd expect. The external controls are also laid out to be quite usable.
Cons: there are only a few features that I wish were different about this camera, but these are minor issues that are based on my preferences. First, I wish the viewfinder was 100%. Its' just under that, and its easy to forget when you are framing shots. Second, the focusing reticles are confined to a much tighter central area than on my D300 (cropped sensor), but this is easily overcome with AFS lenses. Finally, now that I have shot with it for about a year, I am beginning to pine away for something with higher resolution, since I shoot primes and I do a lot of cropping in post.
Summary: if you are serious about your wedding and event photography I highly recommend this camera, especially if you are still using your D200, D2, or D300.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I started off in '03 with a Fuji S2, then D70s, then D200, D300, and finally the D700. Finally, back to full frame viewfinder! Perhaps the best reason to buy this over a D300. The shutter sounds more robust, high ISOs are much better. All in all a really great camera. I will no doubt upgrade the minute the next variation arrives but this camera would please for the decade I suspect.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Shoots great night photos with FX, and high ISO. 5fps and 8fps w MB-D10 are great for sports. fast auto focus. A bit heavy to carry it around for a family vacation, might want to purchase a hand grip strap to make it easier to carry. Can not shoot video.

Coming from a d70, it's literally night and day. The ISO performance is just as incredible as you've read about. The only gripe I have is that I need to turn on the AF correction (+20!)in low light and off in (day) good light. I already miss my d70's 1/500th second sync speed. high speed sync is not really something I'll be using.

This is the camera that I switched to from canon. High ISO performance is terrific, autofocus is spectacularly accurate and consistent compared to my old canon. Autofocus tracking is great, just pin your point on your subject and the camera does the rest. About the only con I can think of would be the shutter noise being a bit loud, which is a very small issue. Choose this camera if you desire great high ISO performance, great image quality, and great autofocus performance too.

Back in early 2009 I was looking for an upgrade for my old D70s and was first aiming to go for the D90.
Discussing with some experts and looking at picture shoot with the D700 I finally decided to wait a bit for save money for the D700.
I got mine end Dec. 2009 and I have to say I am happy not to have purchased the D90. I am rediscovering all of my lenses thanks to the FX format and the incredible sensor makes me trying to shoot some photos I usually would not think about.
Finally, the brilliant Auto ISO functionality is
the cherry on the cake, when it comes to low light photography.

This camera feels and works just like my D300, but the image quality is much better because it is a full frame. Amazing image quality shooting at ISO 6400 indoor. Also, I noticed that the focusing speed isn't as fast as my D300 though. This camera is all you will need for everyday photography.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I am a professional wedding photography in Southern California, and I have owned many Nikon bodies over the years. Every single DSLR Nikon makes continues to inherit it's design tradition of great ergonomics, compatibility, and reliability. Over the years as technology advances, Nikon finally come up with its full frame DSLR - the D700, and the D3 series. This camera is commonly known as the baby D3, and it is as good as everybody claims it is, and then some!
It is impossible to name the absolute best feature of the camera because everything is done just right. I thought my D200 was built very well, and Nikon came up with the D300 that improves it, and the D700 feels even more solid and well built. The layout of all the physical buttons are just perfect with all the most important features right at your fingertips. The camera molds into your hands and the controls follow a natural progression of Nikon's camera line, so a Nikon user will figure it out in no time.
The image quality is to die for; High ISO performance is simply amazing; the dynamic range of the camera continues to blow my mind - as it manages to pull almost 2 stops out of the over exposed areas in some of my misses, and pulls 2 to 3 stops out of the under exposed areas without major noise; The viewfinder is a dream! Auto Focus is quick and accurate and Continuous Focus works with even my AF-D lenses so well that really amazes me; The metering system continues and this is no exception on the D700, being dead accurate virtually every time. The CLS system and how it works with the rest of the Nikon Speedlights is like a dream, and having the pop-up flash serving as a flash commander have saved me over several occasions; having it being smaller than the D3 series is also a huge plus for my application.
The camera works with every single Nikon lens I own, and the best of all it continues to use the EN-EL3e battery that shares with the D200/D300 bodies I own, cranking up 1,200+ images with a single charge before it even gets LOW.
I will buy it again, and again, and again; and I will buy another one when the price drops as a second body or a backup body; and I will probably buy another D700 when the successor comes out because how good this camera really is.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
The camera is great: excellent in low light, fairly easy to use (read the manual!), and smaller than the D3. People cite the cheaper, non spring loaded CF card door as a negative but I don't mind it. As long as you're careful it's NOT going to break off. The only real negative about the camera, and I experienced it on my first shoot with it, is the <100% viewfinder. It's important to look at the edges of your frame during composition and I find that elements end up in the photo inadvertently because I thought I had zoomed in enough to eliminate them. Yes, I know I can crop later at home but that just wastes shooting time. Other than that the camera is everything positive you've already read--just go get one!

Worth the money. I was using a DX format and wish I had switched to FX format long ago! Superior range and images. I added the battery grip and the unit is very durable and easy to hold. With the added battery for use with VR lenses. The camera can run all day for two days and never draw on the main camera batteries. I can shoot 300-500 shots a day and never use the main battery in the camera. I figure I could shoot for up to 4 days on the batteries and never need a charge. I love this camera.

Hi,I am a little disapointed with the D700, the overal picture quality is very good but all the controls are very hard to operate (specialy the on-off-light switch and the MF/S/C focus switch). It's not acceptable on a [$] camera. Also, Nikon should provide a software able to open, adjust and print RAW files. The FX format is great and the internal flash cover my 20mm, Amazing !The viewfinder is large and bright.Very well built (strong) body.I think Nikon over price the D700, it should retail for $1990.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I got this camera a week ago and absolutely love it! I have been a Nikon shooter since film days and have owned; F2, F5, D100, D70, D2X. This is by far the most comforatable camera of all of them in my hands and the easiest to use. The controls and menu are so well laid out it makes shooting and changing settings on the run very easy.
The ISO range on this full frame sensor was what really sold me on this camera. I use the word 'Insane' when I tell my friends about being able to handhold the camera in a room only lit by the TV and being able to get a good and sharp shot of my kid using my Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 lens at
1/20, f/2.8 and iso set at 6400. A little bit of noise, but still a very usable image.
This camera has most of all the extras normally you would only get on a true 'PRO' camera. It has the same eyepiece and diopter, a huge lcd, the smae shutter speeds, the same alloy body and weather proofing.
I like this over my D2X(s) because I bought the battery pack, which if I want to travel light or compact I can remove it.
My only complaint is that the built in meter overexposes images by nearly 2/3 a stop. So an external light meter or knowing your histograms is really a need. I have a Sekonic L-758dr which I use, but sometimes I just don't fell like carrying it so I make judgement calls by setting the camera -0.7 stop. That seems to work fine to get a close to dead on exposure through the camera.
I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone. I might even get me a second when the price drops just to keep my 70-200mm on it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
The D700 is an OUTSTANDING piece of equipment, living up to the high accolades it has received (i.e., DxO). I moved up from the Olympus E-1 and Nikon D80 and it was a huge jump in quality. As I told a friend... with the cameras I had, it was like being a baseball player with an 80 mph fastball... certainly better than average, but nowhere near pro quality. With the D700, I feel like I was able to BUY a pro-quality 98 mph fastball! Is it expensive... yes. But it's a classic case of you get what you pay for. With a professional rock star son who gets me all-access and pit passes and great big-time collegiate basketball seats, low light photography is my primary interest. The D700 delivers in low light IN SPADES, making possible high quality shots simply impossible for lesser DSLRs below the pro rank. The auto ISO is a dream in low light situations... noise reduction and color rendition are superb. Even get jpegs ready for publication. I finally have a camera to match my investment in professional zoom and prime lens!

I LOVE it. It is a chunk of change for a guy like me but I saved up my duckets and love this camera. I can't wait for the sun to come out to head out and shoot. I upgraded from a D200 and you will not be disappointing.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
The D700 is a great camera. It has the same ISO performance as the D3 and is lighter and easier to handle. It also has some featues the D3 lacks. I expect the sucessor to the D3 will incorporate the D700 improvments and more. The D700 has a robust build and solid feel. The shutter is solid and while it's not a D3 shutter it's the next best thing. The D700 is really easy to use and the controls become intuitive after a short period of time. The full frame FX format is addictive and brings the full field of view to DSLR's that the 35mm format film cameras have always enjoyed. The color saturation is brillant. The benifits of the FX sensor cameras are numerous. The D700 sensor is easy to clean. I own a D3 and find the sensor more difficult to clean due to a more confined sensor "box" design. The D700 sensor seems to stay clean for longer than the D3. When you shoot a lot of images you notice these things. I tend to haul the D700 on trips more than the D3 for a combination or reasons. The reasons are primarly size, weight and controls. I seem to get a little better color rendering out of the D3 but the D700 is really close. The D700 has a press and pull memory card door design which is simple and has proved reliable. This is similar to the memory card doors on the D40, D90 and D300S. I prefer the latched memory card door design on the D3 and D300, they seem more secure and robust but I honestly haven't had a problem with the D700 CF card door. I do wish the D700 had dual CF cards slots. This feature can prove invaluable. Battery life is good on the D700 but I always carry spares. With the optional MB-D10 battery pack that uses the EN-EL4A D3 battery and attaches to the bottom of the camera you can greatly extend your shooting time. The built in flash works well. The built in flash will not replace an external flash but it works up close and at short distances. The D700 gives you D3 like performance at a good price.

The best handling at low light image and more stronger construction then Canon 5D mark II. I have used 24-70mm lens that is fast, sharp lens and great resoult I always got. I like D700 so much.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
The D700 is a high performance camera in low-light situations and functions nicely at high ISO levels with little noise. The color accuracy is superb (this goes without saying one must have the correct white balance from the onset).
I assist with wedding photography and cover some other events to include some church sports. I've had difficulty in these settings with my prior camera. The D700 has handled low light challenges beatifully!
I am very please with the purchase of the D700. I'll be even more pleased when I'm completely comfortable with the Nikon layout of the camera because I'm switching from a different camera brand to the Nikon.

Got this camera just a few days before a wedding which I knew would have poor lighting, and it performed wonderfully in the low light. I did have to pick up another book to better explain some of the features of this awesome camera, the manual that comes with it is limited on explanations. And be aware that the Digital format lenses will give you a crop factor even though it is a full format sensor, but this is not a big deal.
Overall, this camera was worth every penny!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Best Nikon ever put out. It can be set to use quickly right out of the box with advanced features like fast sync shutter, High Dynamic Range, and time lapse shooting. But of course it's the full frame CCD that sets it apart lowering noise and increasing color fidelity.
What I hate most, is all my DX lenses are not compatible with the full frame of the camera even though Nikon allows you to set the camera to use the same size CCD as their lesser cameras like the D300...

Been shooting DX for a bit and finally cash out for the FX frame and could not be any more pleased.
The value that one receives once you start shooting with the D700 FX is out of this world. Simple U.I. when shooting on the fly is great. Straight to the point camera no B.S.. Not enough coverage on the greatness of the camera is available on the internet.
Only mentionable negative/downside about shooting from DX to FX is why did i wait so long to buy one.
Nikon has/did a fantastic job in offering the Semi-Pro photographers a value packed FX camera with Pro quality features.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Higher resolution would be a good thing but otherwise the D700 is absolutely incredible. The images are almost magical; it captures what I thought possible.
I have been using a D2x for almost 3 years, its LCD has never been close to the captured image; the D700 LCD is right on and a wonder to use.
The color sensitivity of the D700, compared to the D2x, has to be seen to be believed.
The D700 is a huge leap forward in every way except resolution. Due to the D700's larger pixels, the distance of sharp delineation of detail is reduced. Example: a human hair (.001 inch) with a 200mm lens on the D2x is perfectly delineated out to 4.48 yards but with the D700 the equivalent delineation is down to 2.93 yards (according to my calculations and confirmed with my tests).
I should mention AF. It is awesome. The D700 will track a bird in flight, almost without fail. My 80-400mm was slow (would often seek back and forth between limits) and would loss focus about half the time using my D2x; with the D700, the 80-400mm is a new lens - it is much faster and doesn't seek back and forth, and maintains focus exceptionally well (you must keep that shutter speed up too (1/400 is marginal).
If you have been considering getting a D700, do it, don't wait another day, you'll be happy that you did and wish that you had it earlier.

Brightness of the viewfinder alone is worth the price. The Nikon D700 also allowed me to make better use of the older AI glass I still have. Not every photographer's interested in the increased magnification associated with the DX crop factor. The true actual value of wider lenses on the D700 FX format helps me with interiors and, when I'm vacationing, inside of museums.

I bought this camera after thoroughly researching D-SLRs. Being able to use all of my Nikkor AF-D lenses from my Nikon film cameras made the decision that much easier. The D700's FX sensor yields incredible image quality. With my Nikkor 105mm 2.8 D AF macro lens attached, I've shot macro images of flowers that truly look 3 dimensional. This camera is perfect for those interested in digital landscape photography.

I upgraded to the D700 from a D70s and couldn't be happier. The D700's high ISO image quality has been widely heralded as better than almost any other camera out there and they weren't kidding. You can get great images at 3200iso and even some at 6400iso (i'll usually convert these to b&w).
I would certainly buy this camera again and would like to get a second one as a backup for weddings. Certainly the best piece of photographic gear I've ever owned, hands down.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I have read the reviews on this camera and I was VERY Impressed with the higher level camera features that are used in the D700 from the D3 camera!! This is the way to go, if you don't have or want to spend the $$$ for the higher end bodies. This is the best of both worlds of Nikon Professional cameras and I like the size of the D700 body. Currently, I own the D300 (DX) and was caught up in the question on the size of the sensor? (Should I make the change to FX.) Well I did go to FX and the setup is very much like my D300, so the general learning curve was shorter this time around.
With the increase of features of the D700 over the D300 I still have a few things to learn... Trust me, this is a "SUPER computer" in your hands to take photographs!!! D700 is GREAT and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in the full frame (FX)!! I have bought the older lens versions of the 24mm, 50mm,85mm and have had fantastic results using them on the D700! The D700 will accept the DX lens like my 18-200mm and give you a "Red Frame" to compose the photo to show you the coverage area in the view finder.
Now I just need to add a few of the newer lens to the bag...ie (24-70mm/70-200mm). I have rented the 24/70mm for a few weddings and the D700/24-70mm has been a GREAT combo in the photos produced... you can't go wrong in buying this camera!!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
This is the perfect match for my faithful 35mm AF lenses. I have been using Nikon Digital cameras for years and have always been a little disappointed with their noise at high iso. This camera is unbelievable in low light, I will never miss another shot. Build quality is excellent, it feels like a piece of solid metal in your hand. Better than a D3 and half the price!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I waited a long time before investing big bucks in a digital and it looks like the wait has paid off. I encourage any semi to pro photog to pick up this camera and try the 35mm sensor. It makes digital photography feel like real 35mm film with that feature and the new fx lens are the best match for this camera although any nikon lens old or new seems to benefit from this solid camera. The menu layouts get a bit bulky, but there are shortcuts available and you can make your own menu to access the features you need most. Overall, this camera is amazing and it feels great in your hands and through your eyes.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Stunning low light performance! I've been digital since the D70 was released, followed by a D200. This is the SLR that "completes" my transition to digital. Flawless images, auto WB better than other reports imply, dust free sensor (finally - my D70 and D200 were PLAGUED by dust - 2500 images with LOTs of lens changes in trying conditions, and NO DUST on the D700...). It's slightly larger and heavier that the D200, but the image quality and 300% increase in battery life (from the SAME battery!) makes the D200 feel oh-so amateur. Still nostalgic for film? No film camera EVER delivered low light images like this. Ever... This, after many years of shooting 100% digital in my travels and photojournalism, is the SLR that made 35mm film obsolete...

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
An amazing camera. I did not think it would work for wildlife - but guess what - it's amazing for wildlife. I could not believe myself when I found myself shooting an owl at ISO 6400 - then at 12,300 - & finally at ISO 25,600.
This is an amazing camera which has a beautiful look in it. I was concerned due to crop factor - but it's so sharp & it is so well built I think I'll actually use it so much more than I ever expected. The high ISO feature is just great for going inside - super build quality as well. Great camera - can not rave enough about it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
This is really the best out there. Why spend $8,000 on a D3X for less performance. Image quality is superb for almost any user. Be warned...you better know what you are doing before you buy. This camera can do way more than you think but you really need to study how to use its capabilities correctly. Have fun...you can't get better in a digital camera. If you want better image quality, get an F100 and shoot film. Or better yet, get a medium format. But for digital, this is the best.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Previously owned Canon 300D, 20D, 30D, 40D, & Nikon D300. This is the best one, no doubt (also most expensive). As everyone have tended to notice, low noise, wide dynamic range - benefits of full-frame sensor. Large viewfinder.
Only drawback is that full-frame lenses tend to be worse in the corners. For example, the 16-85 that I used on the D300 was about as sharp in corners as the center. The 24-120 on the D700 is noticably soft in the corners, even when you stop down. But since you tend to crop the corners when printing in standard formats, it's not that big of a deal. But worth being aware of.

Used (with 70-200 f/2.8) at a dogshow to shoot moving dogs in a dark arena (at ISO6400 and above) at 8 fps. This camera produced much cleaner images that those of my colleagues, who were using a high-end competitor. In low-light conditions, it rocks! Don't worry, it works great in good light, too.

This is one of those cameras that you know is gonna rock. It has blazing fast fps. It is solid built and intuitive to the user. I saw the 5d and thought it would be better with vid and higher res but this camera shoots faster. The vid part is B.S. i mean it doesn't have stabilization which makes it uterly useless. anywways this camera shoots great and works great with my lens. It's a big investment but a great one at that.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
Firstly, I'm no expert. I like this camera. It is solid and is a full frame camera like the Canon 5D, 5D Mark II, Nikon D3 and Canon EOS-1 Mark II and III. (Note: The Nikon D300 is NOT a full-frame) The image quality is good. I didn't test it in low light though. From other reviews, it has very little noise at high ISO's in low light.
The menus are easy to use as well as a handy on-screen help menu. To erase the image just hit the garbage can button twice. It's that attention to detail that makes me like this camera. The menus are sometimes long but not too complicated.
Live view is cool also. The LCD is very bright. The pop-up flash is useful. It may not be strong enough, but I like it. When you turn it on, it fires up fast.
It feels like a pro camera. Like I said, I'm no expert but I've shot a few like the Canon EOS-1 Mark III and the Nikon D3 and it has the same feel. But it's much smaller and lighter.
Just check dpreview's website and see how much they like it. They give the camera over all a 9 rating. They say this is the best pro-sumer around, but I haven't tried the new Canon 5D Mark II yet.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, 12.1 Megapixel, 0.72x Zoom, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:
I'm a portrait photographer and prefer working with my subjects in natural light. With significantly better high ISO performance, I can shoot in much more challenging lighting conditions. If I'm working with flash it is stellar just as the D300 and D3 are. DR with this camera is unbelievable. Coming from a D300, I noticed I had more room to play with highlight and shadow detail in my RAW files then I did with the D300. If you are looking for the flexibility of the D3 sensor at a lower price, I highly recommend this camera. If you have a D300 and do a lot of low light photography and aren't happy with the results, give this a shot. I was only comfortable shooting up to ISO 1250 on the D300. With the D700 I've had very usable shots at ISO 3200 as well as many usable ISO 6400 shots

The full sized CCD allows shots to be taken in low light with minimal noise. The technology enables low light action shots to be taken without a flash. The only problem is that low light increases the time for the autofous to take effect.

The auto white balance works so I don’t have to manually set it. The higher ISO range and stronger internal camera motor allows me skip using a tripod with my 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR lens. The camera has active D-lighting to bring out the details from highlights and shadows. It has the same full frame sensor as the professional Nikon D3. But Nikon added a sensor cleaning mechanism with piezoelectric elements. It vibrates the image sensor to remove dust. Another new feature is a virtual horizon level indicator. The 3.0-inch, 922,000-pixel LCD screen is great. It also has a built-in flash that is missing on the D3. If you add the Nikon MB-D10 battery pack it will take the camera from 5fps to 8fps. This camera is hard to beat for the price. I have no regrets.

I love the low noise and full frame performance of this camera. Last weekend I shot at iso 1600 inside a battleship control room (lit only with dim blue lights). The images are really cool.
I had just gotten my DX lens set about perfect, but it's worth the change back to FF, at least for me.

This is an outstanding camera, I could not be happier with the results that I get from this camera.Being able to take photos at very high ISO really makes the difference as far as being able to keep the shutter speed at a decent level. And the graininess (noise) of the photos is almost non existent even in low light conditions. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking to take high quality photos, Im sure you will be happy with the results from this camera.

If you do studio work, you already know you need a full-frame camera for low-noise. Right now, the D700 is the best for low-noise. 12mp is ample for medium-large prints (24mp is for huge gigantic posters that no one will ever print - don't waste your money on that). If you want clean, crisp pictures, the D700 just works every time, even in low-light. In fact, the D700 is the best in low-light. I have seen the Canon 5D and worked with the Canon 40D and the D700 blows them away. Use this camera with good glass. Invest in the 14-24mm or 17-35mm super wide angle. Get a 35mm, 50mm, 85mm or 105mm f/1.2 - 2.8 prime (based on your "normal lens" and low-light needs). Get the 70-200mm VR and a Nikon teleconverter. You'll be glad you did. I also recommend getting an old cheapy *used* Nikon 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G "walk-around" lens that mostly plastic and is super ultra light for those days you just want to go for a stroll (not good for low-light though), because photography is supposed to be for fun as much as for perfection. Those 4 pieces of glass will make you very happy with this camera.Full-frame does not have long telescopic reach. If you previously used crop bodies (D300, D90, D40), then you will feel like you can't "reach" your subject with a 200mm lens. Get a teleconverter, but make sure you get the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR to go with it. Don't get the 70-300mm, don't get the 80-400mm. The reason is that this camera is meant for low-light and low noise. Get the best and use this camera as it was intended -- in those "hard to get great pictures" moments. Master your D700 control options, the defaults are good, but tweaking them a little really really helps to complement your personal style. Finally, the battery grip is NOT an option. Just get it. And get the expensive battery. The reason is that the battery grip with the expensive battery will last you 3 times longer than the camera alone and will increase your frame rate to 8 fps, which is insanely fast for every day use, but critical to getting the perfect expression on a baby's face, or getting your pet in that just perfect pose, or snapping the right moment at a sports game. This camera PERFORMS. Get it. You won't be sorry. Ge the accessories. You only live once. It is the camera you want for the next 5 years. And the Nikon warranty will last that long as well!Adorama is great. [...]

i recieved my d700 from adorama nearly a week ago, and fell in love with it instantly. the shutter took a little while to get used to, but i dont even notice it now. i shot about 400+ pictures with it, no problems. it is truly amazing the amount of detail that you get in the shadows, and i havent had to run any noise reduction when i am processing, even at iso 800!!! I then wanted to try it out with my mb-d10 battery grip.
i connected it and the camera started to go crazy. i turned it off, and when i tried to turn it on again i smelled burnt electronics. MY BRAND NEW CAMERA OF JUST ONE WEEK HAD FRIED!!!
needless to say i was a little perturbed. i called adorama and spoke to scott. he told me to box it up and send it back, and they would get a new one in the mail immediately. these guys are SERIOUSLY AMAZING. i will never make a major photography purchase from any other company!

This is probably one of the best purchases I've made in the way of cameras. The high ISO performance is phenomenal, as is the burst rate. Unlike Canons, almost any F-mount lens since 1977 will work with this camera, and pre-AI lenses from as far back as 1959 can be modified to fit. (My oldest is a circa 1964 200mm Nikon Q lens.) This is really the camera the D300 should have been since it is essentially the best of the D3 in a smaller package. It may not have a movie mode like the 5D Mark II, but the incredible flexibility in lenses makes up for that. The only flaws I've found so far is it is fairly heavy and it's not particularly suited for infrared photography. Otherwise it's a joy to use and one I plan to keep for years.
