Comments about Ricoh Ricoh Caplio R4 Black, Digital Point & Shoot 6 MP Camera, with 28-200mm Optical Zoom & Vi...:

This camera is the best point and shoot I could find. I researched for weeks. It's got an aluminum, tough construction body and stylish looks. The LCD is huge and great resolution. The images look great! Low light photography doesn't give anywhere near the problems I have read about and was prepared to work with. Huge zoom range! The features of this camera are unbeatable. Movie mode is great. There are a host of manual controls that give an up and coming photographer some creative control over exposures to work around frustrating limitations of consumer pre-arranged settings, as well as the addition of well concieved scene modes. Battery lasts very long. I could go on and on; I am very happy with this purchase.

Comments about Ricoh Ricoh Caplio R4 Black, Digital Point & Shoot 6 MP Camera, with 28-200mm Optical Zoom & Vi...:

While not a glamor cam ,it produces good quality pix under all conditions I've experienced so far ,and after about 1000 shots . Have not had any 'banding' problems that others have complained of in www.DPReview.com . Indoor shots at ISO400 yield 8x10 photos that look OK to me . Am always worried about that flimsy lense cover , but treated with care in a proper case ,it should be O.K. The omission of image rotation among all its' many other excellent features is unforgiveable . However, who else makes a P&S cam with 28 to 200 mm lense in small portable size ? Given the R4's many good qualities , I forgive the few cons listed above. I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ20 , a Fuji Finepix E-510 and the Ricoh R4 . Of the three cams the Ricoh is preferred and gets the most use , so that tells you something .

My initial reaction on getting this camera was "it's too good to be true" for all its features. It's still basically a good camera, but it's not all what it seems on the surface. The banding (specially in high contrast shots) is a showstopper. This may be solved hopefully in the new R5. I had quality control issues like inconsistent ability to use some of my SD cards (work sometimes, then not on other times, the cards work perfectly on my Optio WPi). Again this may be corrected on the R5. My advice: consider R5 but pass on R4, make sure you can return with minimal hassle and minimal penalty just in case, lower your expectation considerably on its touted low-light capability.
