Comments about Sony Sony DSLR-A100 a (alpha) Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-70mm Lens, 10.2 MP, Interchangeable Lens.:

I got this camera just recently. So far my only complaint is that my nose puts prints on the screen. I know there is newer stuff out there, but I went for this model because there is lots of experience out there for me to refer to. I have had Minolta film SLRs, hence the comment that it "feels like home." It may not do everything perfectly but for someone starting out, it can't be beat. [...]. Comments about Sony Sony DSLR-A100 a (alpha) Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-70mm Lens, 10.2 MP, Interchangeable Lens.:

I already own a Canon XT(8 meg) Digital Rebel, but I have a old Minolta 550 35mm with a few xtra lens. I decided to get the A100, to use those lens.Since I've been using both now, I can say I like the Sony A little better.I still like the Canon's slighty(actually very slight) less noise at high asa's though for astro pics. But for all around use, the Sony seems better.Longer kit lens, better grip and feel, more megs, larger lcd screen,"chip cleaner",easy to find controls, great pics, and a lot faster upload speed to my pc. And a great price!!

Was disappointed that I was not made aware that the kit lens is 18-70 mm in film cameras, while in digital it is 27-105mm.

I miss the extra control dial that allows for seperate dials for f-stop and shutter speed (a la the Maxxum 7D) but have learned to live with it. Excellent RAW conversion software included.

Comments about Sony Sony DSLR-A100 a (alpha) Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-70mm Lens, 10.2 MP, Interchangeable Lens.:

It more than met expectations. I've used this as my main camera on a photo shoot in Alaska, 2650 images most in RAW. The Sony RAW Converter works great. We need compatability with Elements and Paintshop Pro, the poor man's photoshop. All of my Minolta Maxxum lense, flash, etc. work just fine on the Sony 100. This was a big plus. The antishake in the camera is a blessing... hand held in low light works better than expected. I had experienced Minolta's antishake on my Minolta A-2... also a good camera. Does it lack anything? Not on my book.

I've also begun to use the Sony for a local newspaper, small town weekly. The publisher saw some of my images and asked if I'd take a few assignments such as football games, local teas and such. Great experience. Putting the story together with the pics... and choosing 2-4 images out of say a hundred or two is difficult, at times, as I want folks to see my work.

This is my first digital SLR. I purchased the camera two weeks before a cruise to Alaska, and I didn't want to schlep my old camera with rolls and rolls of film, so I took the plunge. I was very pleased with the ease of learning to use the controls and menus. The images I captured, in sunlight and in overcast and rainy conditions, are equally high-quality. The image stabilization feature is incredible--I shot the scenery while leaning over the side of a railroad car traveling up a mountain and they weren't shaky at all! The only negative point I find is the graininess of images taken in low-light conditions with an ISO of 800 or greater. Otherwise, I highly recommend this camera.

Controls similarly enough to a Minolta Maxxum
that I had no trouble just picking it up and begin taking photos. Taking it to Israel and then to Honduras with no concerns.
