Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This is a great lens for macro photography. The pictures come out crystal clear. I just love it! I am a newbie and this is the first lens I treated myself. I've tried using macro on the kit lens and the telephoto lens and they just don't compare. I've also used it photographing a neighbor's wedding. The details of the wedding (cake, flowers and etc) were just phenomenal. I only wish that it's not so heavy for a small person like me. I will definitely carry this gem in my camera bag at all times.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This lens isn't an IS lens, so you need lots of light, fast shutter speeds, a tripod and a monopod, for many shots. Not a problem. ... The specs say it focuses down to a foot, but that's the distance from the film plane to the object. The front of the lens actually gets to 5 or so inches of the object.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

I've owned and sold a few lenses. This one keeps making the cut. It's such a good focal length and fast aperture that Canon upgraded it recently to an "L" with IS (I'll get that later). For now and for along time it's been a good portrait, general use, and landscape lens and a great macro lens. I've never had a problem with it. It has a firm place in my kit along with a 17-55 EFS and 100-400 L. Granted it shoots like a 160mm on my Rebel Xsi.

I haven't tried the other macro lenses from Canon, which are more expensive. I'd say this one is great for value minded enthusiasts. If you own a Rebel, I recommend putting on a battery grip to help balance out the weight of this lens.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

The Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens is an absolute necessity for the amateur or pro photographer interested in high-quality macro shots. This lens is super-sharp even at 2.8. Autofocus is a bit slow at times, which really is not a factor in my rating because I simply don't use AF in macro work. Doubles as a fabulous portrait lens as well. I have had the lens for three days and haven't taken it off my camera. I love it!

From the moment I took this lens out of the box I have been having a great time with it. The images are sharp and the color is beautiful. It does have a very smooth and quiet AF but, like most close-up photographers, I rarely use it. If you are looking to get into close-up and macro photography, this is a great choice.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

I purchased this lens to add to my still life shooting collection. The macro is incredibly clear but the shallow depth of focus makes it challenging for macro photographing still life that is more than an inch deep. It provides some of my most stunning macro images when the depth of field doesn't vary more than a 1/4 inch. The bonus with this lens is with casual portraits of the family. This is where I really enjoy the shallow depth of field as the background simply disappears behind the subject. The fixed focal length limits it's flexibility. However, the portraits I can produce of friends and family are really stunning.Highly recommend adding this to your camera bag [...]

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

I bought it to take photographs of smaller objects around a physics lab. With a 1.6 FOVCF body, it's quite tight and you can fill the frame with about a 1" object. But it's a full-frame lens so it will still be useful if I upgrade to a full-frame camera in a few years, at which point I might supplement it with the 180 mm macro.

spectacular lens for both up close macro and general portrait. I'd use it all the time except sometimes you just need a bit more of a wide angle to get more of the scene.
ITs sometimes hard to hold the camera/lens steady for very close shots ofd small things, like insects. would recommend tripod.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

I purchased this lens chiefly for macro photography, and it performs admirably for this purpose. It has a large enough maximum aperture that you can sharply image butterflies or other insects by utilizing a fast shutter speed. I haven't yet encountered a problem with inadequate exposure, but admittedly, I don't try to take insect pictures at dusk, either. I considered getting the 60 mm Canon macro lens instead, but I'm glad I bought the 100 mm. I wouldn't have been able to get close enough to a tiger swallowtail with a 60 mm lens for the picture to look like much of anything. Even though the closest focusing distance is a little shorter for the 60 mm lens, you can still get plenty close enough to flowers with the 100 mm lens to capture their intricate detail. This lens has other more general purposes as well. It's a lens you could use for informal portraits without "getting in the subject's face" and that could be especially important when capturing the expressions of small children. Again, the large maximum aperture permits the photographer to intentionally blur any distracting background elements. I'm also beginning to realize that there are times when it is useful to isolate portions of landscapes, and 100 mm is often a good focal length for this. I shoot with a Digital Rebel XT right now, but this lens can be used with a full-frame camera body as well, giving it even more versatility.

A Clear, Sharp, Overall Fun Lens

Best Uses:
General Use, Macro Photography, Portraits

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This is the first true macro lens I've owned. I've always used extension tubes or magnifying filters to achieve the macro functionality. Right out of the box this lens performed fantastically on several various check photos. The focus was surprisingly fast and the lens is every bit as sharp as advertised. It took a few tries to get the knack for achieving the focus and depth of field placement using the macro range, but those issues were solved within the first 10 or so pictures (just takes a little practice if you aren't used to a macro lens).

My wife and I also own the 100mm/f2 lens which provides a good basis for comparison. The non-macro f2 lens is certainly more compact and takes exceptional photos. However, if you don't mind a little extra size once you get out of the wide-open low-light situations the 100mm/f2.8 macro matches the day to day performance and useability of the other lens for me.

Overall, if you are looking for a lens in the 100mm for general use with a little extra fun built in, this lens is a nice alternative to the 100mm/f2 offering in the Canon lineup. I would like to give it a higher rating, but haven't yet used it enough to throw caution to the wind and give the full 5 stars. However, so far I've been very satisfied with the results.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This is one fabulous lens, deserving the “hidden-L” designation, although there is no UD glass inside. This lens scores very high on objective bench tests for several reasons including:
– zero distortion regardless of the size of CMOS.
– no vignetting on “C” size cameras, moderate vignetting wide open (f/2.8) on full frame cameras, which disappears a f/4 or higher.
– low or no CA.
– high resolution (best at f/4 through f/8).
– excellent bokeh.
– little if any lens flare and none with the hood.
– IF design. The lens does not grow longer like Pinocchio’s nose as you adjust focus.
The most common complaints (and none of these complaints kept the reviewers from loving the lens) are:
– lack of IS (on a C size camera the focal length is 160mm). Use the old rule of a hand-held shutter speed that matches the focal length.
– shallow depth of field, wide open, on macro shots. Of course.
– front glass too close to the front of the lens. Use a filter.
– lack of a tripod ring. The lens is not heavy.
– no built in hood. Use the optional hood.
– sometimes hunts for autofocus. Preset the approximate focus range or use manual focus.
The bottom line: probably my favorite lens of 5 Canon lenses.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

this is my first macro lens. i searched reviews for weeks before deciding on this one. and it aims to please! i always hear people say, "all the fancy equipment in the world won't make you an excellent photographer", but this sure can make your pictures look amazing!! i teach High School Photography and my students pictures look so great with this lens. it's so sharp. I LOVE 2.8 lenses. i have a 1.4 which is beautiful but the 2.8 has more depth without giving you too much!! it's fast! it's substantial. you really feel like a pro with this thing! i love it.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This lens is as sharp as any of my L lenses. It is a great lens for portraits with the 2.8 speed and it is superb for marcro and close up photography. I especially like it in my 40D because it becomes in effect a 160mm giving me a little more working room. It also does not get longer/shorter as you focus, a real plus in macro. I cannot say anything bad about this lens, except that it should come with a lens hood. (Available cheap aftermarket). I don't think you can buy a better macro lens for any amount of money.

What can one say about this lens? There really isn't much. Its too darn perfect. Its one of Canon's best lenses. Its amazing, simply perfect. I couldn't ask for anything more from Canon or this lens. Its well worth the money. I was looking at the Sigma 150mm as well, but I never gave it a chance. If I could test the Sigma, I would have. But if I have to shell out the cash and don't get to test for free, I will go Canon everytime. All my Canon lenses blow me away. You'll love this macro lens. And by the way, Adorama is a great store to buy from. They are prompt in shipping, returns, and offer awesome customer service. Good luck!!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This is an excellent macro lens. Optically, the lens parallels that to of an L-series lens. A nice feature with this lens is the ability to take other photographs other than just macro. Some macro lens will only allow for only macro use. I have been using this lens for a while now, and I continue to get consistent results. Focusing the lens may seem slower than what you maybe use to, but with some use focusing will be second nature. I was disappointed that the lens did not come packaged with a lens case – no big deal, be sure and order a case if needed. And! Remember your depth-of-field, as you get closer to your subject, you will start compressing your depth-of-field.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

I purchased this lens to get better shots of insects and small items. In this regard it has performed beautifully. Focus is sharp and the build quality is very good. The f2.8 aperture pulls in more light for the tight shots and lets me kick up the shutter speed - good for insect work. My only complaint is that the lens will sometimes search excessively or fail to lock on in low light or close focus (under about 1 meter) situations. Switching between the focus ranges doesn't seem to help much here. This isn't that much of a problem for me though, since I do almost all of my close macro work using manual focus anyway. Autofocus is quiet and manual override is possible in AF mode. Color correction and contrast is well above average, with only minimal off axis CA noted at times. Edge sharpness is likewise very good (I use a Canon 20D, which crops the FOV, so I can make no accessment of how it performs in a full frame DSLR in ths regard). Overall, a solid performer and I'm glad I bought it.

this is the lens i was missing. it has allowed me to see things that most people will never see. enlarge a close-up of a tiny flower or insect and create a work of art! i find myself discovering things every time i use it. you will need a sturdy tripod for full macro work, but hand-held shots are possible with adequate light. the hoops you must jump through to get the shot are inherent with all macro photography. discover whole new worlds without spending a small fortune. optics are very clear and it feels well made. very happy with this lens.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

I own two great L lenses, and this lens is right up there with them with quality. In fact, its 2.8 apeture is better than my L lenses. I can't tell you what a wonderful portrait camera this is, you've got to see for yourself. I can't tell you what a macro lens it is either, but go look around on places like photosig, flickr, etc... and you'll see that it will knock your socks off. I HIGHLY recommend this quality built lens that offers a fantastic value. My only disappointment is that you really need IS with macro lenses when doing portraits and it doesn't offer it. I'd gladly pay $[...] more to have this lens with IS, than with out it.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This lens was my biggest investment so far and I'm not sorry I bought it. Although the autofocus is good, smooth and quiet, I usually prefer to manually focus. The lens is a bit heavy, but I've can still get decent shots without a tripod. I do have to be extra careful when mounting it, or I'll get an error. For those who want to do macro shots, this is a terrific lens.

Amazing Macro Lens
By Dr. AntVerified Purchaser from Canberra, Australia on 2/5/2007
Pros:
Compact, Sharp
Best Uses:
Documentary, Macro, Nature
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - USA:

This is one of the best macro lenses I've used. Light, compact, sharp and with a great working distance for insects. And the autofocus, wow! Normally it's manual focus when you get close to 1:1, but not with this lens (on a 30D at least). The autofocus is good enough to track flying insects, such as bees visiting flowers, with an in-focus rate of 70% or better! Just amazing. The Nikon and Sigma macros I've used don't come close to matching this. Combine this with sharp, CA-free images and the ability to easily mount a macro flash and you've got a winner. If I were Mr. Nikon I'd be very scared.
