Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

First copy had a lovely grinding noise to it, but Adorama was quick to replace it! I shoot mostly primes, so I'm glad to compliment my 28mm and 50mm with this lovely beast. I enjoy the fact it mounts well with my aps-C camera (front heavy, but manageable), and shoots sharper than my other glass. I can't imagine mounting anything heavier/larger on my camera though. EG. The 70-200 2.8 looks horrible on my cam. Can't really argue the cost, this L does double duty shooting macro and long portraits.

I have only shot with it a few times but it is amazing. It is very sharp. AI is a little slow of you dont have the focus limiter on the correct setting. But really who uses AF with this type of lens anyways.. The Image STab. is a big help..
Alot sharper than my other tele and zoom 'L' glass.
THE price is steep but its worth it.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

So far have used for some portraits - 100 mm is excellent for this.

More importantly the macro capability is clearly superior to Canon's non-L version which was very good itself. Auto focus is very good but for detailed macro work I flip the mirror up and focus manually with at 5-10X magnification. This L lens with this technique takes absolutely superb photos.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

Just received my new Canon 100mm F/2.8L IS macro and I'm loving it. Took it out to the back yard for some test and got some great shots of a green lizard on a fence picket.

This is a sharp lens and fun to use. I wanted something for those little critters that was sharp and captured all the details. The IS is a wonderful advantage for getting pictures of small creatures when the time to set up the tripod will cost you the shot. This lens fits the bill. I thought it was a little pricey and had considered the Sigma 150 for the working distance and ultimately went with the Canon for two reasons, it's an L, which guarantees high quality and resale and the Image Stabilization. The IS is worth it and the difference in working distance between the Sigma 150 is very little.

This is my first macro lens. I am very impressed. The IS works well for standard shooting but if you are going to do true macro I would use a tripod. The lens is light compared to the 24-74 2.8 L but it does not feel cheap in any way. Smooth focus ring and sharp output.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

I do a lot of product photography and I needed a macro lens for some of the shots. The lens is actually light weight for its size and feels solid. AF isn't great if all focusing points selected, but if you change to one it will focus right away. The images are sharp and the colors are very true. The second use for this lens could be portraits and it performs here very good as well. The best feature is the 4 stop IS.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

I must say, I was a little hesitant at paying this much for a macro lens. But the Image Stabilization you get in addition to the non-IS version of this lens far outweighs the price difference.
My only slight issue is the auto focus, which is at times, whimsical, but if you pre-select the auto-focus range other than "FULL" it works great.
A must have for any enthusiast!

Everything positive that I read about this lens was accurate. Stunning macro photos. Makes me feel like a professional. Better with flash, even in daylight. Only thing to watch for is that the depth-of-field is very shallow so it's important to be thoughtful about the subject and what you want to emphasize about the subject. If your subject is fairly flat, less thought is needed.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

I bought this lens for taking macro photographs of fauna and flora, portraits and some commercial products. After using it for a little over a month I'm not exactly sure I like this lens. Here is why. First the focus is slow on FULL, I found it easier to use a manual focus, not good if photographing bugs. The macro shots I took of a tulip didn't come out with a crisp focus I was hoping for. Pictures of a spring up close did come out nicely though. I guess I'm having second thoughts and wished I would have bought another lens like the 85mm.

A really GREAT lens for macro photography. The auto focus can be a little touchy if the subject is moving with the wind or just moving on its own. Doing hand held shots is now a lot easier when the use of a tripod is out of the question. Have to give this lens 5 stars. Thanks Canon.

I wanted a medium telephoto lens with macro and IS so that I could use it for closeups and low light portraits. I replaced a Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro and with this lens and the Canon is a huge improvement in focus speed and color rendition. The new IS features on this lens are amazing. The image below was taken at 1/8 sec. f/2.8 - handheld! I have never been able to get handheld images that sharp at that shutter speed before.

Great for macro photography and the 100mm is excellent for getting in close without disturbing the scene. The shallow depth of field created by the optional focusing distances and aperture are also great for throwing portrait backgrounds out of focus. Image stabilizing is a great feature on this lens as well.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

I was a bit hesitant to take the plunge on this lens - the 100mm non-L, non-IS version is just so good to begin with... I thought I may be disappointed and not see much of an improvement. But this lens really does take things to a new level. No regrets whatsoever.

The addition of IS is a huge improvement, and as one other reviewer pointed out, has really increased my keeper rate substantially. The optics are top-notch - the non-L version was quite sharp already, but this one is even sharper.

Some have complained about build quality, and the use of engineering plastic vs. standard L metal... are you crazy? The build (while having a different feel) is still very solid, and IT'S A LOT LIGHTER than it would be if it were all metal. Not sure what kind of macro you guys do, but when I'm trying to get just the right depth, I'll take as little weight as possible!

Two things I will mention - plenty of raves about macro applications, and I'll just say "DITTO" to that. But not many people have talked about non-macro usage, so I thought I might address that just a bit.

At portrait lengths, this lens also really shines, producing stunning images that remind me quite a lot of the 70-200 2.8 IS. Something about the L glass captures light and color in a truly beautiful way. At portrait lengths, the one downside is that it can be a bit slow to focus if you don't specify the range on the barrel switch (which helps quite a lot), it can search for a bit, going through the macro range as well. Switching to 0.5m-infinity range helps a lot. Aside from occasional slow-focus though, this lens is really stunning in portrait settings.

Also, for the video crowd... If you're doing more and more video work, as I am, you'll find the IS to be a HUGE advantage. I use both my 5D Mark II and my 7D for video quite often. The IS on this lens is incredibly steady, and can at times make total-handheld shots usable (no tripod, no glidecam... handheld - no joke). The IS on this lens is highly impressive, and I'd say makes this a must-have for serious video shooters.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

I had been considering this lens every since Canon introduced it but just couldn't justify it since I already had the 180 which is just simply unrivaled. And although the 180 is a truly awesome piece of glass there were many times that I felt that it came up short due to the lack of IS.So I finally pulled the trigger and the gratification was instant. The 100 is a real joy to use.The AF is very fast, the images are razor sharp and I find that the IS lives up to all of its billings. The fact that it is lighter than the 180 is another plus.I give this glass 5 stars but with reservations.I just couldn't bring myself to give it 4 stars because it truly is a great lens.So why the 4 1/2 ? Well, the bokeh can't match the 180 but as usual Canon came up with a lens truly worthy of the L class.Bottom line, get it.You won't be sorry.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

Awesome lens. Good bokeh, color and sharpness. Easily the sharpest macro lens I have. I own a Sigma 70mm DG macro lens as well. It is sharper than the Sigma, but the Sigma seems to have slightly better apochromatic color correction. Fast, precise focussing.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

Such a great lens for macro work. The new IS works well, making "hand-hold" close-up and macro photography truly possible. I have used three other macro lenses, a 75m/m, a 90m/m, and a 180m/m by different makers and this Canon 100 macro is by far the best! Silent, fast focus, moderate weight and great optics make this lens the one to use for macro...and it is a wonerful portrait lens too.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

Canon doesn't give their equipment away, so I guess the price is a bit of a con. However, compared with my Tokina macro, the Canon is far superior in quality, ease of use with my 7D, and clarity unmatched.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

The biggest hurdle that this lens has to get over is that the old, inexpensive, 100mm f2.8 macro that it sort of replaces is just SO good. But I have to say that this new IS lens truly is worth the additional expense. I use the lens on a 5D Mk II (mostly) and a 1Ds Mk III for technical and laboratory macro photography in biomedical research. The addition of IS hugely expands the limits of what I can do without the inconvenience or photo effects of flash - especially when coupled with the superb low light sensitivity of the 5D Mk II. Apart from the IS feature, I would agree with other reviewers that the optical performance of the lens is at least as good as the old non-IS lens, perhaps a bit better - and that old lens is phenomenal. BUT, if you are going to use a macro flash unit you will need to get an adapter ring (67C Macrolite adapter, 67mm to 58mm adapter, I think) and a 58mm lens cap to use when the adapter is in place. The 67C adapter does not vignette on this lens at all.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

I had the other Canon 100 Macro. I sold it just to get the IS and L benefits and I even got a better resolution. A macro lens is exactly what I need for details. This one does a very good job.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

The lens is as sharp as its predecessor, but now has image stabilization. While you can use it anywhere a 100mm prime lens is useful, it is, of course, designed to be a macro lens and it really shines. This lens has the new stabilization system that also handles angular movement. Superb Canon lens.

Coupling this lens with the 7D gives me the security in knowing that if I'm caught without my tripod or just don't feel like using it I know I can still get the shot.
Thats what counts.

Very versatile lens. I use this lens extensively for portraits and macro (flowers, bugs, bees etc.). A bit heavy but nicely balanced when paired with Canon 5D Mark II. Outstanding sharpness, shallow depth-of-field and with incredible bokeh effect!

Being "shaky" at 62 yrs young, I long awaited an "IS" lens. The 100mm meets this. I was disappointed in the build. Not "L" quality for the price. But a great lens nonetheless!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

Just got this lens from Adorama last week and haven't put it down yet.
My work is predominantly macro so I also use the Canon MP-E65mm f/2.8 1-5x and the 180mm f/3.5 L macro lens.
These two lenses are used mostly handheld in the field chasing down bugs and capturing flowers, but of course do not have IS.
With the new 100mm with hybrid IS my keeper rate when used outside in the field has increased whether it's used in natural light or flash situations.
I find that in some situations I can also use the auto-focus combined with the AI Servo setting on my camera body with fabulous results.
I have it mounted on a full frame Canon 1Ds Mark III and have used it on a Canon 50D with great results as well.
Great lens and great fun.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - U.S.A.:

I've only had this lens for 4 days but it's been so so very fun. I'm loving the close-up capabilities and the background blur in portraits is gorgeous. It seeems to search for focus a bit with extreme close-ups but not too badly. So glad I waited for the Image stabilizer version of this lens because I'm getting nice and sharp results.
